Our current style is to play slow and then bomb it in 50.
At least with Saad and/or Williams we could play fast and then bomb it inside, which would give Harry ( and Charlie if he were playing) more actual one on ones and more space to play vs the congested forward they they consistently have to deal with each week.
This. If u want to bomb it into the forward line, it’s gotta go in fast to give the talls max opportunity. You can’t play slow and then kick it in and expect the forwards to have a great impact on the game when you’ve got 30 players sitting waiting for the kick!!
kicking in long can work, but it’s gotta be quick and to advantage if possible

Plowman is a quality lockdown defender. He was third in our B&F last year and played even better this year - he continues to take on the toughest roles and pick up scalps. He isn’t going anywhere and we should be thankful for that.

Instead of saying he’s no good, the small minority of you can just put a sign on your forehead saying you have no clue about footy so the rest of us know to ignore you.

Lockdown defenders that take the opposition’s most dangerous small/medium forward are always underrated because the nature of their role means they’re going to concede the occasional goal, and conceding a goal rarely looks good.

Of course, Plowman hasn’t always been this good and there’s been plenty of warranted criticism. But he is a different beast to previous years, and people hanging onto their gripes from years ago clearly aren’t watching games. As players improve, you need to be willing to re-assess your opinions.

All good sides need a versatile disciplined defender like him. He is actually quite a solid rebounder when given the opportunity too, which you can’t underestimate.

There are going to be times when our structures break down, his opponent gets an easy goal and he unfairly looks bad. There are going to be times where his super talented opponents simply do get the better of him and he’s beaten - not everyone can win 100% of contests like Weitering. But that’s just part of the caper. Don’t worry about Plowman - he’s the least of our concerns.

Perfect post! Plow is criminally underrated and one of the best lockdown defenders in the league.

Hey! You know common sense isn't allowed here! He occasionally turns the ball over by foot and is sometimes beaten by more athletic players so he needs to be delisted! Trash player!

Huh? He held the two best small forwards in the league to 21 touches and 1.3 combined in the span of 3 weeks? But remember that one poor kick he did? Checkmate nerd /s

Priority needs to be clean ball users.
Witherden, Merrett and Wiliams are fit this bill.

I don’t want Saad at all, all he does is run 15m and then bomb it to no one.

Agree with this but add Narkle. I want some speed in the midfield. Williams adds this too but Narkle has some serious toe

Plowman does get best forwards in attack
Plowman in my opinion would be easily in top 10 selected every week
At training he is actually very quick and fluid, well balanced ...has it all
In matches he is calm and efficient ...
He has a good temperament ......of course some of the times defenders will become disorganised with pressure ...however as explained he has a sound professional temperament ...thus maintaining his focus on the job
Solid pickup for CFC...👍

Going fast also helps Eddie, if the ball spills there will be less congestion which gives him space which he needs

So who stands in his place at the moment? Neither Owies, nor Philp, nor Honey nor any other player on our list plays the small forward pocket role of equal or better output. And plonking a Cunningham or Fisher in the forward pocket is not the solution because that will impede their development. So if they can go and recruit a forward pocket player, more than for that player to take Betts' role.

Owies will be cut.

Absolutely, wholeheartedly agree with you Chooka. Betts is totally cooked and the only reasons i see value in him playing on is if Zac Williams has stated he will come if Eddie goes on and/or a marketing and membership decision.

We have an issue as a club where we priorities a nice story over actually winning. Just look at chairing off Gibbs last week.

Need to prioritise winning.

Forward pocket is a very difficult position that seems to be only judged by goals scored.
He kicked 13 from 15 games. So third highest goal kicker. Led our goal assists with Gibbons the next best.
Someone will have to play that position. Putting Honey in a forward pocket will not help his development because that’ll play him out of position. If we want to move on players for the sake of player development, then have a replacement that is suited to the position.
My Only reservation with his goal output (yes he third) is we play three tall set up-- with the amount of inside 50 we get I feel he should of been closer to double his tally -- betts of old would of nearly won the goal kicking this year with the set as was .. but if we want to play him as a pressure forward ok we still need a small goal kicking forward to run with three talls

The only reason Plow will never be AA contention is his offensive side is next to non existent. He is quite happy well the pill pisses out of his zone, then resets for the next I50 for the oppo.

If he could add some I50 or metres gained, he would be in AA discussions.

I would delist McGovern he doesn't get involved enough in games and has zero intensity. At his age he should be a consistent performer he isn't so needs to go.

I would also delist Casboult dont think you can play Pittonet, DeKoning and Casboult in same team and I would rather the club keeps playing DeKoning and Pittonet than Casboult.
Expensive
Pls study our available dump list...we have plenty
Cas has played his best footy now........need back up ruck also even if he does reserves which he excells at
Gov was expensive and he has buckets of ability ....you can see he is not properly conditioned and needs several months of hard training ..if he cannot do that to an Afl standard you have a point ...he will probably get a role as swingman defender....however if he cannot reach condition and gets injured or whatever he will be eventually delisted👍

Demons and Norf are chasing Saad as well. No way our second rounder will get the deal done unless he nominates us there's a chance.

That's why we may look at trading our #7 down to two later first rounders that Brisbane and Geelong hold.

I'm not a huge fan of Saad, but if we finally choose to play Williamson off a wing, it all starts to fit.

It's fair for people not to expect too much given where we finished but again, I feel that would be to dismiss the bigger picture here.
We now have a whole pre-season of correcting our weaknesses in not being able to play to a standard over four quarters...three quarters, we're OK....but it's that one lazy quarter every week that's somehow mostly let us down.

Going to make some assumptions here but -

Docherty Jones Plowman
Williams Weitering Saad................Marchbank or Newman as the 7th defender here.
....................................................Williams and Saad give us e run we need out of the backline. Nice to have one on either flank.

Pittonet Cripps Walsh
Williamson Setterfield Fisher............Just don't think TDK is ready for 100% of the ruck duties. Maybe some weeks on and some off with Pittonet

Martin CCurnow SPS
Honey McKay DeKoning..................Much sooner see SPS mid/forward. Much more creative here
...................................................Time will come for Casboult also and if we are to utilise two ruckmen, then maybe this may be the way to go.

IC -
Marchbank or Newman
McGovern or Cuningham
Dow or Kemp or Philp
ECurnow or Gibbons

Chose not to include Murphy, Casboult and Betts for now......and apologies to a couple of others; Stocker & Cottrell in particular.

If we could downgrade that first, it leaves us with a first for this year and one left intact for the next. (very important)

In fairness, he's about to turn 26 next month and has been poorly conditioned his entire career. He was also never a proven player. Played 48 games at the Crows for 67 goals when they were at their prime. In addition, he was often matched up by the 4th defender, which allowed him to have his moments. Now he's taking the 2nd or 3rd defender and he literally can't fire a shot.

At his age, you can't be using the word 'potential' anymore.

Quite frankly, the only difference between Mitch McGovern and Callum Moore is the terms of their contract. I hope things change and work out for Mitch, but right now he doesn't look like he's going to offer us much.

He's only one year younger than Mason Wood, another one of those 'potential' types who has just been delisted.

We don't need a swing man. It's overrated and only ever required by teams that haven't built a strong spine.

I've seen suggestions that McGovern should be moved down back as a 3rd tall. The only problem is Marchbank is a far better player and when he returns, there's no room for McGovern. He's either making it as a forward in our team or he's a bust.

My priorities for the offseason:
1. Two assistant coaches out, new forwards coach plus new development coach to help Power.
2. Mark Williams in as specialist kicking coach.
3. Two new topline midfielders via trade preference for Merrett and Williams.
4. With list sizes shrinking I wouldn't mind picking up an experienced winner that gets squeezed out like maybe Gunston or Edwards to help with variety in our forward zone.
5. Wouldn't take Saad unless he was a lot cheaper.
6. Best available in the draft, plus a young ruckman with a late pick.
7. Delistings will take care of themselves, pretty obvious who is in the gun.
CB

An ideal trading period this year for me would be to grab Merrett, Viney and Williams without completely leaving the first round.

I still want to bring in some well credentialled young talent. I'd also settle - if the above isn't possible - for exchanging Williams for Saad, as it would be possible - subject to negotiation - to do as we did with Jack Martin if Essendon/Dodoro decides to play hardball with that trade.

Not saying the decision to renew Betts is a good one, but I think we have to consider the extenuating circumstances.

1) Fills a temporary area of desperate need. We need to pickup or develop some quality small forwards. Honey and Zac Fisher hopefully can develop nicely and we probably need to acquire another option (Bailey Fritsch anyone? apparently he’s out of contract this year)

2) I’m assuming he will provide a genuine attraction to the club for trade/FA targets in particular indigenous players (Zac Williams etc)

Simmo on the other hand whilst performing better, he plays in an area where we have Newman and Marchbank coming back, Zac Williams and/or Saad to join, Kemp and Stocker may play in defence at times.

I’m torn on Saad, would like him on face value but he’s not worth our pick 7 and Dodo will want the world for him.
2) if we are relying on Betts to attract players, we are doing it wrong.

Yes, but if we’re pointing out a couple of clangers each game, then why doesn’t every player get criticised?

I’m a fan too and you’re right that he gets the awkward jobs and plays big or small, which shows his value.

I agree. Cripps kicking it straight out on the full under no pressure. Delist! Sakc!
