You can’t do that to a former captain and champion of our club no matter how much he has declined.

This is the guy that turned down Brisbane to give us hope at a low point in club history.
I respect your opinion, but this is the sort of thinking that frustrates me. Why do e keep living in the past? Do you want the onfield performance of the team to improve or hold us back so as not offend a player well past his prime?
I want the team to improve, the club is bigger than the individual.

I’m tired, haven’t had my coffee yet, so no big stones just yet please.

What about MCGovern for Polec. We keep Jack.

I don’t see any movement happening with Gov this year. He is contracted, his trade value is pretty poor based on out put and fitness levels, and there’s also the embarrassment factor of ending up with pittance in a trade for a player that the club initially gave up a lot more to get over the line. Realistically, if Gov doesn’t see next year as make or break for his footy career then he’ll deserve to be cut. Assuming everything augurs well with player fitness, he’ll need to establish a place in a team that has Weiters, Jones, Marchy, Plow and Willo in defence, and Harry and Charlie as the focal points up forward. It’s in his hands to make it work just like Jones did to reinvent himself for the sake of his football career.

Club isn't bigger than contractual law though.

Do you really want to rip the heart/fabric out of the club by bringing in a player that is well past his prime and probably only has 2 years left, Higgins would also be at his 3rd club and doesn’t run both ways.....

If the replacement option was younger and had more upside then maybe I can agree with the notion.

We are not that close to bring in players like Higgins at this stage of his career.

We need a talented kid of our own to push Murphy out by having developed to an acceptable level or recruit someone into his role that can be around for much longer.

Higgins is the type of age/player you top up a top 4 side with, look for Geelong, Pies, Brisbane etc to be looking at him. Somebody to take them to another level rather than a team like carlton using him to get us into the top 8. Hawthorn did this alot in the their 3 peat years.

Straight swap for JSOS? :moustache:

Would like a Jy Simpkin or Curtis Tayler as a forward option or Ben McKay, but young guys are probably unlikely.

Norfs want to get rid of Polec ($3,5m/5yr contract) - could we use a quality older winger? If they pay 300K pa?
What about Jed Anderson (OOC)? Been injury prone but offers a mature body in the middle that is AFL standard?

Prefer to keep Silavagni but if it must happen surely we can shake something loose other than a token pick.

Hawthorn done this well when competing for flags regularly but continuing to do it the past couple of seasons has seen them rapidly decline.

Club can’t sign Murphy for 1 more season and then flip him aside when a slightly younger player comes along that can give maybe 2 years of service after all Murphy has done or been through.

Would prefer they didn’t sign him in the first place.

You’re right Higgins has Geelong/Collingwood etc written all over him.

Higgins is turning 33 before next season starts, and declined this year- he's definitely into the gravy years where he can still rack up possessions, but doesn't hit the scoreboard, tackle, or have the impact he used to. To be honest, he's their version of Murphy in basically every way. Geelong/Collingwood can take him imo.

Certainly doesn’t sound like someone you would tear up the contract of a former captain and blue for life champion for, surely Murphy deserves better than that.

We should get serious re. Graham and offer the kids another 50k per year and get him over the line, then focus on someone like Saad to replace Simmo.

That is realistically chicken feed. If we/others were only going to offer him that much of an increase, he would stay at Richmond and try to continue having success.

The way you get these players out of successful clubs is by essentially offering them double or more what they are on / being offered and over a longer term than the incumbent club can do.

Say JG is being offered 200-250k for 2 years at the Tiges, clubs looking to shake him loose and in our position would be offering 400k-ish over 3-4 years with performance incentives. It's how Sydney got Josh Kennedy, Brisbane Linc McCarthy, St. Kilda Josh Bruce etc etc etc. Is as old as time.

The CFC trade Hit List – 25.09.20 :)

Williams – HBF and Midfield - Success

Wines - Midfielder
Merrett - Midfielder
Oliver - Midfielder
Viney - Midfielder
Lonie - Small forward
Saad – HBF
Witherden – HBF – Not Required
Caldwell – Midfielder – Not Required
Wright – Forward/Ruck – Not Required
Narkle – Midfielder – Not Required

Perryman – HBF – Re-Signed
Graham - Midfielder - Re-Signed

1. We have ourselves a quality running defender/midfielder
2. If Williams is earmarked for the midfield though, we may still be short one running defender. Saad makes sense.
3. There seems to be a heavy concentration of midfielders here.
4. Still no noise around small/mid goal-kickers
5. Still no noise around KPD's, an especially so if we do let go of Macreadie.

It's early days but right now the targets we're talking about seem a little unbalanced.

Yeah I tend to agree on Balme he’s a very shrewd operator that knows how to get a club up to the pointy end and keep it there, I would personally be rapt if we could get Balmey to come across as our footy boss as success follows him as sure as night follows day. Be damned his past history we need his sort at Carlton in the now. 😁👍
Just received a text that Balme is leaving the Tiges after this campaign. Heading to Adelaide possibly. 🤢

I would add Constable to that list.

I am not fussed if we don't land a small forward (and less so about a KPD) this year if we can add 1 of Wines, Merrett or Oliver and plus Saad to Williams we will have an amazing rebounding half back line and a very strong midfield with a couple of the best young marking forwards in the game in front of them and the likes of Martin, Cuningham, Fisher, Honey & Owies providing enough speed to at least lock the ball forward.

Geelong or st kilda apparently

The best small forwards are off the market.

So, we could look at maybe going after Lonie, Ronke, possibly Hunt.

Highly, highly doubt we'll delist Macreadie as well.

No way Constable. We have Cripps and Setterfield.
Geelong don't play him for a reason and expect Stephens to surpass him soon enough.

If we took something we didn't need...I'd be very disappointed but....so far, so good.

Added Lonie

I'd have a look a Brander or Ballenden type. Forwards that can't break into their teams.
Ideally a disciplined, agile and versatile player

"Geelong don't play him for a reason" Dangerfield, Selwood, Duncan, Ablett & Stevens?

9 games in a career, 5 above 20 possessions including a 27 & a 31 - get him for very little, I wouldn't be dismissing him out of hand.
