Takes a bit of re-reading but clubs must have a minimum of 37 players and a maximum of 44. This includes Category B rookies.

There’s also a 10% salary reduction which is at the clubs’ discretion (so doesn’t have to be uniform across the playing group) and I think it was also said yesterday that clubs may take a minimum of just 1 player (or more if they choose) in the ND rather than the mandatory 3.

By my reckoning we currently have:

34 continuing senior list players
1 upgrade from the rookie list (Gibbons) (Pick 78 assuming we use 38 and 48)
3 players traded in (Zac W, Saad and Fogarty)
5 continuing rookies (Cottrell, Honey, Phillips, Owies and Moore)

so currently 43.

So do we go with just the 1 live selection in the ND?

Are we delisting 1 more player to take 2 live selections?

And do we have to move a player to the rookie list?
We will trade our 2 early selections for a earlier pick

There has been a lot of talk that due to lack of disclosed form for the draft many clubs will be inviting groups of undrafted kids to train.

I suspect we will want the flexibility to invite undrafted and delisted players to train with a view to picking 1 or 2 that fit.

Plus there is talk of pick up periods during the season so I think post draft we will still have at least 1 open spot.

If we cut say a moore, we cant switch polson to rookie right? I mean, he will have to go through the rookie draft set up correct?
If we delist say Kennedy and/or Harry Macreadie with the aim to rookie list them, technically other clubs can draft them before our rookie picks.

I'm sure I heard Wallace on SEN a while back say that if a club makes it's intentions known that they are going to re-rookie the player, there's a 'gentleman's agreement' that other clubs won't select them. I guess it's more about allowing clubs to manage their list rather than a rival club sniping.

If the AFL's tardy decision making and notification causes clubs grief with the main list/rookie split, an amnesty should allow automatic rejigging of the allocations.

You suggesting one of these or just creating a list of delisted players?
It's obviously my shortlist of players, otherwise it'd be about 5 times longer.

Half of them won't be interested in playing for a Victorian team, or need to go through a medical, or just haven't wound up finding the right mindset for professional sport, but there's a lot of raw talent there.

Fully accept that professional recruitment staff have a better grasp of where each player is at mentally and professionally, as they should, because it's literally their job.

Previously if they went through the ND and PSD undrafted, they'd be automatically rookies if the paperwork is done.

Same is true for Father-Son (cat A) and Academy (cat B) players.

DRAFT PICKS

Pre trade period - 7, 27, 45, 81 - 2694

Post trade period - 38, 48, 78 - 767

Points differential - Minus 1927 points

Effectively, we paid the value of pick 5 and Simmo (the only out who had an impact this year) for Zac Williams, Adam Saad, and Lachie Fogarty

I can live with that especially if the rumored one player draft rule eventuates. If it does its likely there will be teams passing before our first pick.

Love your work, W.

Just wanted to confirm

Have no interest in Gallucci, stated my reasons previously

Pittard would be like recruiting a boomerang

There will be some better players delisted shortly, hopefully ones that suit our needs

why didn't we take tom phillips from scumwood in trade period good pick up for hawks and cheap

Not cheap at all, if 500K was the price to take him off Collingwood's hands, regardless of the player.....who happens to be not such a good player and then someone we don't even need. The cost would then be all the heavier should we not have the money for Cripps & McKay, thereafter.

Carlton had a very good trading period and there's absolutely no need to double on types you already have on the list......because somehow they happen to be good players. Glad we didn't get sucked into taking on the likes of Brodie, Blakely, Witherden, Narkle, Constable etc. It's just a waste of resources.

Witherden is an absolute steal, will play a fair bit of high quality footy at WC

Lions erred here

Crazy that they're paying a good chunk of his salary, also.
Something's not right about that deal whether I rate Witherden or not.
Huge gap between Saad and Witherden though; One took a top ten pick to ge the deal done, the other was just about given away.

That is what most of game is about, people in the now, rather than seeing the possibilities

Admittedly, Witherden is of similar pace to the majority of our general defenders, hence Saad types being a slightly better fit, but none have Witherden's footskills

If we knew what was truly unfolding at the Pies, I would have enquired about Noble

very mixed bag of opinions re phillips on the pies board this season - one extreme muppit suggested the only good thing about losing their final was never seeing him in the b & w again - go figure............

Didn’t know Ned guy posted on bf.

Noble wouldn't have been on a ridiculous contract though.
Probably would have moved on Grundy before him. :)

Still wonder why such a big clu had to pay so uch and for so long t players that didn't warrant the money...Weird.

Adelaide: Crocker, Gallucci
Collingwood: Scharenberg
Fremantle: Isaiah Butters
Kangaroos: Ahern, Murphy, Pittard
Port: Atley, Frederick
Richmond: Turner
St Kilda: Parker
West Coast: Watson

I'm expecting some more interesting delistings in the next few days as list sizes are confirmed.
I wouldnt look at any of those players....
