We don't have to trade out any of of our required youth to get a player likes of Papley, despite my opinion of him not being our priority when it comes to needs

Target the likes of Zac Williams and or Crouch/Viney, who are FA's

Draft picks/players to give up = zero

Then you have a plethora of OOC players

I swear to god, we say that about 80% of the players on our list.

Ha, I know what you mean mate.

I just think if we have gone to the trouble and expense of getting Andrew Russell and our fitness department in order, we should give them an opportunity to fix these woes. The same goes for recruiting, we have put some expense into that too... Not that I want us to double down on draft/trade mistakes, but I don't think CM fits into that category. Young, athletic and talented KPDs don't grow on trees, think he's 100% worth sticking with.

Whilst is also rate Papley super highly, it doesn't seem that hard to find his type, despite our dearth in that area over the past few years.

Always liked CM, think he is absolutely best 22. I don't at all think Papley is a priority anymore. I would have loved for us to get him last year, but now that it didn't happen, our need is still midfield help for Cripps. Personally, Id throw the kitchen sink at Wines. And double it up with Viney as a RFA.

Ridiculous comparison to two absolute plodders (the latter a fumble merchant) when Dow's main attributes are his explosive breakaway speed and clean ball-handling.

Priddis won a Brownlow, so not bad for a ‘plodder’. And Dow has hardly shown those attributes at AFL level - mostly he looks lost. I’d happily take Kerridge-level output from him at this point.

The problem with free agents is that you have to actually convince them to play for your club ahead of 17 others.

Unfortunately, we are competing with 9 other Victorian teams for any ‘go home’ candidates, and we’re a likely candidate for yet another wooden spoon right now. Why would any of the 25-yo Crouch, Viney and Williams want to ply for Carlton ahead of literally any other team?

At least with contracted players you can negotiate; if they want to come home and get the associated pay rise we might be in a better position to make a trade than a top-tier team who have less value draft picks and likely don’t want a player swap.

The conspiracy is that after Gil put pressure on GWS, it led them to upping their contract offer to Coniglio, thus leading him to re-sign. I recall the whispers at the time being GWS not giving him the 7 years he was chasing...but then they relented.

GWS would have known what the asking price was, and been happy to outbid other clubs to keep him. He is their most important player, and was sounded out for the captaincy the year before so giving him a big contract would have been a relatively easy decisions.

Like any negotiation, they would have started low to see what sticks. In the end it was a fair deal for both Coniglio and GWS.

I think we are going to struggle to get Williams to Carlton, but Crouch shouldn’t be too much of a struggle. He was happy to go to Gold Coast last, and with Adelaide declining which often has the effect of bringing individual player performance down, I think we will be in the perfect spot to get Crouch for a reasonable price.

I’d rather we avoid Viney altogether tbh. He’s gunning for his biggest contract and has an injury history as extensive as Crouch’s. Surely he stays at Melbourne though.

You'd hope that the Teague connection with the Cows may have an influence if we did choose to pursue Crouch.
We do have some money in the piggy bank, so who knows.....

The same can be said for contracted players, 9 other Victorian clubs targeting the likes of a Papley if he wants back in.

We have enough money, we just need to be a viable option

BTW, we won't finish bottom 6, bookmark it

He won his Brownlow as a one-paced accumulator who'd regularly rack up 40+ (virtually the opposite of how Dow plays). And the Kerridge comparison (superb endurance athlete with poor ball-handling) is even further off.

I really think we need to get paddy dow and some of the other youngsters in the middle. The old blokes just arnt doing it for us. Also especially for dow it would help his confidence which clearly has been an issue for him

Completely agree its time this club got serious about this rebuild. Get Midfield minutes into Dow, Stocker, Setterfield and Walsh. Get O'Brien on a wing.
We've gone hard at the draft now is the time to play them. We aint gonna win a flag or even play finals with Murphy and Curnow running through the middle.

Yeah, fair enough - there’s a path to getting Crouch that way.

Money won’t work with those guys. Any team can shuffle the deck to get a competitive figure on the board, as we have seen with Shiel, Coniglio, etc.

It’s about situation and opportunity, and outside of the Teague personal connection I don’t think we have a hope unless something massive changes in the next month or so

Wow - I love that optimism!
Not saying it’s impossible, but just out of interest I’d love to know your opinion on which 6 teams will finish below us?

At least with contracted players, quite a few of the clubs just don’t see it as ‘worth it’. Either there is a price to pay that is too high or disruptive to their balance, or they don’t want the whole trade week tied up as clubs have been in the past.

I love your optimism too. But we are staring down the barrel of 0-3 in a 17 game season (and both Essendon and St Kilda after that would be HOT favourites over us right now for 0-5). I’ll just be happy if don’t finish last again tbh

The Viking is back..

Interested to know what people think about the best way to use TDK?
I love his potential (I know, that word is overused) and desperately want him to get some game time in the seniors. However I cannot see in the modern game how we play all of:
Jones
Weitering
Pittonet
Casboult
McKay
TDK

I don’t think we can sacrifice midfield rotations for so many bigs.
Jones and Weitering are certainties.
McKay needs to play.
Pittonet showed in Q2-4 last week that he is well worth a shot at the #1 ruck.

That leaves Levi.
He was an absolute revelation last season, and despite a so-so game last week I think has earned his spot as the backup ruck.

Where does TDK fit in?
Does he only play if one of the above 5 get injured?
I’m stumped.

Okay.
I hope you’re right!

Yep. I think Betts will play one more year but Martin, Cuningham, Murphy and SPS should also play half forward.

Betts and Murphy very close to finished, cannot factor them in.
Martin and Cuningham are medium forwards and SPS is marked for defence.
Again, going forward, who do we have as a genuine goal kicking small forward ...

Its concerning that we don’t have a single developing pure small on the list. Agree that Cuners and Jack don’t fill the role.

The likes of Cameron, Papley, Breust and Walters were all picked up for peanuts later in drafts. Depending on the list sizes I wouldn’t be against taking 2/3 hits at pure smalls with our last picks this off season.

Alternatively let’s just get Papley done and pencil him in for the next 8-10 years.

Wines and Papley would be nice and seems realistic...would be hard to trade in both in 1 year though. Our 2020 & 2021 1sts would need to be involved.

Based on the weekend's team having Papley in for Lang and Wines in for Setterfield would have been pretty nice.
Think Setters did pretty well tbh. Wines for Newnes would be a better swap. But im not overly excited about Wines. He isnt going to get any better and I think Port would want a top 5 pick for him at a minimum.

Crouch for just money is a better buy with the position we are in.

We have made a mess of our midfield recruitment.

Early in games when everyone is fresh the opposition mids with far more speed then us escape the contest and get the ball in quick and score and once they get tired our work horses get on top and grind it back.

Cripps is a bull but you need speed around him to cover his opponent and with Curnow, Murphy, setterfield, Kennedy, sps, etc we don't have it.

Last thing we need is another slow bulky mid, we need speed

Absolutely....there's no doubt SOS identified this before the 2019 draft.....Kemp, Philp, Ramsay and Honey all possess foot speed. They just need time.
But we desperately need another big bodied mid to give Crippa a chop out before he burns out. That's a not negotiable.

Agree with this.
If by some miracle we are presented with the option to take our pick of Crouch or Wines - for the same $/length of contract - I’d 100% take Crouch due to the fact he would not cost any players/picks to acquire. Utilising the FA market while retaining draft assets is the best approach.
