I can see a role for him on the wing. He is a great mark, has great run, and could play that marking release player out of the backline. Better that he plays on the wing in the seniors , than spending time in the NB's waiting for an injury to Weitering, Jones etc

That notion was there and it was trialed via a pre-season, but it all came to little.

I'd sooner have Williamson on a wing, as he's tall, strong, has the running power, is agile and has a good kick on him.
The starting wing spots will be interesting and of course many will go out on the widest of flanks, but there will be the 'preferred' and I feel one of the mids will largely take on wing (Walsh/Fisher/Dow etc) and one of O'Brien or Newnes and maybe Newman at times, the other.

Can't see Marchbank being moved out of defence to play a wing role and again...at the expense of who?

Jesus.

In how many times and how many ways can an argument been misquoted, misappropriated, and strawmanned over the course of a day?

I'd dearly love for someone to point out precisely where and when, in my post history, I suggested interchanging people from the back six/seven for those out of the squad for the purposes of matchups. Never said it.

I'd also quite enjoy it if people would say precisely who misses out for Marchbank if he's in the team, because that's the nuts and bolts of my argument; purely, that he doesn't have a role at present that another player isn't better at.

It isn't because he can't play small, or because he's shit, or any of the other things people have assumed I'm saying, either. People need to actually read the posts others write a bit more.

******* hell.

The best case scenario for Marchbank right now is:

Plowman Jones Docherty
Marchbank Weitering Simpson

This means not using SPS down back as the club has indicated. I can see him ahead of Williamson right now, but Willo is a better fit long term. I can see him on par with Newman.

The issue we have is what to do with Levi who is a genuine swing man and back up ruck, when all of H, Charlie and Gov are playing.

I concede that Marchbank is a better prospect to play KPD if we have someone go down during a game, compared to Plowman for example but as a versatile third tall defender, Plowman is clearly ahead.

I suspect the club want to play Marchy so we will see two KPDs, two third talls and two runners in defence. SPS and Newnes will rotate back there when the third talls or two smalls go to the bench.

Simmo needs to keep up the pace this year because his position is definitely under threat.

tell me true - anyone fully believe sps will play out his entire career with us?
Good chance, Jack Martin has signed for five years so i would think he will stay that long at least. But if he goes he's already pushing two first rounders.

I don't see that much for him - from the getgo I've struggled to fully embrace him (much to my disgust at myself) I love the silky presence he has, the deft touch, the sublime footwork, the options he assesses whilst opposition are still wondering where he went - yet I just can't fully buy in - am I a deadset tool? where is his best spot considering we have 20 backmen, 30 wingers and he's not a forward? come at me or gtfo.........

Of those in his draft year, only Taranto has had a greater individual performance, and that’s arguable as it is. He’s 21, and played 64 games. This year I expect him Increase his disposal average by at least 3 p/g. At the moment the gulf between his very best and his average game is too great, but I expect that to decrease this year.

I don’t see sps on a flank long term. IMO in his prime he becomes one of our starting mids, playing a balanced inside/outside role. Essentially first receiver.

cut a long story short... yes, deadset tool 🙃

Don't think Marchbank will be KPD and that's okay

Ha ha, his best spot is hb, wing, inside mid and hf all in the one game. I think you'll see horses for courses in a number of our mids.

Midfield will be his best position, but his got good versatility in his game that will allow him to be dangerous in other rolls .. would have thought he would have shown more consistentcy by now a little frustrating, it's his poise and class in traffic that will make him an outstanding midfielder particularly if he can start to get his kicking right..

He was trialed in last years preseason?

b} deadset tool
c} deadset tool
d} deadset tool
e} all of the above.

Gotta be B&D ;)

Bit late to get this one up and running - but new year, new thread.

And thanks to Lore we've got a shiny new spreadsheet with all the data you could possibly want.

I find it interesting that all our older players are out of contract. I think maybe 2 will retire.

Out of the others out of contract-
most important-
Setterfield, Plowman and Newman.

See how they go-
Kennedy, Newnes, Marchbank, Macreadie, Gibbons and Williamson.

Need more time to develop-
BSOS, Honey, Phillips, Owies, O'Dwyer and Cottrell

Probably in trouble-
Lang, Polson and Goddard

I imagine a minimum of five being moved on from the main list. If we get a good run with injuries then we may also see some guys wanting to move on for opportunities.

Setterfield and newman got 3 years, so 2 more I think

Newnes got more than 1 year, not sure how long

Macreadie, Lang, polson, odwyer in the gun. Others will be re-signed.

Simpson maybe to retire.

I think 5 changes to the main list max. Upgrade gibbons, draft 2, 2 trades/FA

Probably delisted: Polson, O'Dwyer, Goddard

Need to show significant progress: Kennedy (fitness & output), Macreadie (fitness & output), BSOS (output), Lang (fitness & output), Owies (output), Phillips (physical development), Cottrell (output)

Retirement possibilities: Simpson, Betts

Trade/FA currency: Casboult, Plowman, Newman, Gibbons, Marchbank

If the main team finishes top 4 and if the NB's play off in the Grand Final......or something like that.
If it's less than 8 players, I'll be surprised, because I can't seeing us completing the above double....it just won't happen.

Get ready for some of our young guys changing hands also.
We don't want it to happen but it's likely to, if not for another reason than for lack of opportunity, or not playing in their preferred roles.
Players such as Kennedy, Macreadie and maybe even one we don't wish to mention yet.

Who?...

Probably phrased that incorrectly, but the likes of Fisher, Dow, O'Brien and SPS will be courted and more so should opportunity not be there for them.

There is little way this whole young group of mids can co-exist. I just can't see it.

Harks, do a best 22, minus Jones and older, see if they can co-exist
