We have to do something about the number of injury risks on our list this offseason.

The number one skill in footy is availability and our list has far too many guys who just can’t get on the park:
- Kreuzer, Marchbank, Williamson, Macreadie, C. Curnow all unable to stay on the park
- Newman, Kemp, Docherty all rehabbing serious knee injuries
- Murphy, Curnow, Simpson all heading well into their 30s next year

That’s 11 guys we can’t count on to be fit... plus a half dozen first/second year guys and rookies who aren’t AFL ready, plus whatever random ankles and hammy’s happen (and add our usual trash recruiting 2-3 guys who it immediately apparent aren’t AFL standard).

Too much of our list just aren’t ready or reliable for AFL Footy.

Spot on. SOS has to go.

Such a tantalising prospect.
Have only seen glimpses in the draft profile videos, but his combination of size and power in a mid/utility is really something we desperately need.
Equally the way the coaches/fitness staff rave about his commitment to recovery is a great sign. From all reports he’s quite sure of himself, but confidence is not a bad thing.

From his latest haircut he's quite sure of himself - but flair and extroverted players is a definite need in our team.

Also, I seem to recall his weaknesses (needs to find more of the ball to become a top tier midfielder, consistency over four quarters, unclear best position) were almost word-for-word the same as the Bont's in his draft year.

This was Knightmare's write up of Kemp last year. If he can recover properly from his ACL and we give him all the time we need we could have a dead set gun on our hands. Him, Walsh and Cripps together, and if we can land an established mid in the off-season might see us make 2021 the year we finally move up the ladder.

We should be thrilled with our selection of Kemp IMO, let alone the fact that we basically got Philp for free because if you ask me, I would have been totally fine (happy even) to have taken BK with our original selection. A SOS masterstroke me thinks.

Hope we give the lad absolutely all the time in the world, knock some puppy fat off him and see how he goes. I am already a big watch on him, really like the potential.

He seems to be the exact player we have missed in the first 2 weeks.

He seems to be the exact player we have missed in the first 2 weeks.

I think he is a slow burner despite his seemingly 'advanced frame'. This is amplified by his injury...

I think he might struggle to find his feet positionally early in his career, which I hope isn't until at least next season but once he gets those 2-3 full pre-seasons under his belt could really become a player. I expect him to play once his knee is sound, but don't think he will be a Matt Rowell (early crow)/Joel Selwood early on.

Our 'needs' right now and improvement needs to come from players like Silvagni, SPS, Marchbank, Cuningham, McKay et al and even Gibbons and Newnes types, not our Kemp, Dow, Philp, Stocker type of players. They need time to develop. Not including Walsh in this because he is special and we should get some tangible help from him.

They will get games, but we are at a point where there are other guys on the list in a similar boat, no not as much gifting them games as would have been the case in 2018 and much of last year under Bolts.

Teague has the right idea in getting guys to earn their spots.

The worrying part we have in order to progress we are going to have to get a group of 10-12 players who are unproven to a) cover up losing those guys and b) be able to make us even better again.

It’s a tall order, but we need a large amount of them to become regular contributors.

With all of Simmo, Murph, Kreuzer gone in the next year or 2 then Ed, Levi and Jones not too far beyond that we need guys to step up pretty quick.

I assume this is Simmos last season, unless the team catches fire and makes finals or something.

I am guessing Murph and Kreuze will go around another year unless injury dictates otherwise.

Or someone at the club will have the balls to make a hard decision and say no more? Theres always that option, but I don't see it happening.

Question? Would you trade Marchbank to Sydney to get papley
I personally would do it in a heartbeat
I just think we have plenty to cover that area of the ground

Yeah I would. But I very much doubt Sydney would consider it, at least not in a straight swap.

I really like Marchbank. He's a massive talent and a clear best 22 player at full fitness, but his body is a serious concern. I'm not sure we'll ever see the best of him, and it'd be pretty hard to say no if we could use him to fill a massive need with one of the best in the league in that position.

What would you pay for Papley SB ?

I don’t think he is worth a first rounder but I would pay around pick 15 - 20 if needed and depending on draft year. Even then I think we over pay.
There is no use getting another small forward in, if we cannot win the clearances and he hasn’t and doesn’t play midfield. Our priority should be on another 2 bigger bodied midfielders and all our resources should be focused on these trades.

Sorry but unless you are very close to the coalface (in which case you are, perhaps, breaking a confidence) you cannot possibly know this.

Fine, there hasn't even been a suggestion of us missing out on a genuine need due to us not offering overs.

We offered huge money to Cogs. Papley said yes, but Sydney refused, purely because they couldn't get Daniher.

Thanks for your reply SB.
I’m afraid Sydney wouldn’t even bother returning our call with that offer.
With Betts quite possibly retiring this year, who would be our genuine small forward/s for next season ?

Definitely, and we would take it and run but his value isn’t much given he hasn’t been fully fit since midway through 2017.

If we are going to get Papley it will need to be for at least one first round pick. Our first this (say 5) for Papley and something like Sydney’s second or third is even value.

I concur with others though: a small forward isn’t a pressing need. We need to go after at least one B+/A grade midfielder in the right age bracket. If that is Crouch, we can add both him and Papley.

There’s a path for him that involves building his body and tank, learning to read and adjusting to the pace of the game. Even then, his upside is likely Matt Priddis and downside Sam Kerridge and that is IF he can get his body right
Ridiculous comparison to two absolute plodders (the latter a fumble merchant) when Dow's main attributes are his explosive breakaway speed and clean ball-handling.

Exactly - the CEO said he'd like him to stay, which is pretty obvious given the AFL's investment in GWS, so in the eyes of Bigfooty his opinion = intervening.

Use some common sense - Coniglio wasn't re-signing just because Gil wants him to.

The conspiracy is that after Gil put pressure on GWS, it led them to upping their contract offer to Coniglio, thus leading him to re-sign. I recall the whispers at the time being GWS not giving him the 7 years he was chasing...but then they relented.

Look, a definite no from me but I think you find plenty that might. Verrrrry easy to forget that this bloke is only 23 years of age.

Is clear best 22 for mine and has real ability, just needs a clear run with injury. Whilst we seemingly have a few key backs, none that really play the mix of role and play with as much athleticism as Caleb does; he's a bit of a different 'type' to our others.

If we are fair dinkum, draft picks should be meaning less and less to us over the coming couple of off-seasons and we should be looking to deal them rather than blokes of Calebs age and of his talent, unless they reallllllly want out. We have had our time at the top end of the draft. If we believe in our foundation talent, we should be trading in and signing FAs IMO. We of course need to draft astutely with our picks beyond the 2nd round, but the time has come for our recruiting team to start earning their money in that space and finding a gem or fill a list hole with a genuine player.

I could see Murphy filling a small forward or forward pocket role for a season or two TBH.

Don’t forget the marketing money suddenly appearing .....

I swear to god, we say that about 80% of the players on our list.
