Music to my ears, Kelly has always been the one. Easily the best fit next to Cripps.
Kelly is a gun. But the price is too high. The club held the firm view we needed one more strong, mature mid. if Setterfield’s rapid development and Gibbons form continues it might change the analysis. If this occurred, and I were to target GWS players, I would go after in order of priority: Perryman, Williams and Caldwell. Reasons: Perryman’s disposal is elite, he gets the ball a lot and is a genuine goal scorer. Williams frees up SPS to go mid/ forward and creates another midfielder for us. Caldwell adds to mid depth. Line up

Docherty, Jones, Plowman
Williamson, Weitering, Williams
Walsh, Cripps, Caldwell
Perryman, Charlie, McGovern
Betts, McKay, Martin

Pittonet, Setterfield, SPS

Casboult, Kemp, Dow, Philp, JSOS, Gibbons, Newman, LOB, Cuningham, TDK, Kennedy, Fisher, Stocker

We still need an elite small forward. But a midfield of Cripps, Walsh, Caldwell, Setters, SPS, Philp, Kemp, Dow, Gibbons, Martin, Kennedy, Fisher, Stocker and occasionally Williams has depth and talent.

For the price of Kelly in trades and cash we could easily get both Perryman and Caldwell and Williams is a FA. Would be fine going past Caldwell but he would add grunt and speed around the ball.

Posted this in Depth thread and post this here too:

Interesting discussion coming I believe about how much of our depth is banging down the door to take a spot in the 22 and / or to be next in line when a senior player departs.

Some recent examples:

- Kennedy banging the door down and DT saying we couldn’t ignore him despite some team balance concerns. I think he was great against Dogs and poor against Port.

- Pittonet in for Kreuzer injured is positive and is absolutely a value trade win for us. That said, I believe TDK in a couple of years will be challenging either Pittonet or will be ready to take Casboult’s position.

- Williamson in for Newman injured is positive.

- Martin and Betts into the 22 is positive.

- Setters and Cuningham I think are in our best 22 and that is positive.

- Emergencies / Interchanges / Next in line - so we are not rushing players back into the 22 as quickly perhaps we might have done. Now is it a stronger 22 and support cast or a change in player management philosophy, or both? I think JSOS and Fisher are probably our 2 next in line, and our 22 probably needs Dow when fit and finding the ball ... and there are injuries / team balance to address ... so this week the Emergencies are Cottrell, Moore, Philp and Honey ...

And so the next bit, 2 questions for debate and discussion:

1. Who is close to retirement/ delisting and who replaces them?

- Think Simpson, Murphy, Kreuzer, Ed, Casboult, Jones ...

2. And who is say in our bottom 6, and is our depth ready to replace them and go better?

- If not injury, who does say JSOS, Fisher and Dow come in for? And Kemp next year?

- Where do we see Marchbank, Macreadie, O’Brien, Stocker, TDK and others?

- Who is trade bait? (What gets Papley to us? Who do we want as our ‘second midfielder’ after Cripps?)

Thread is thread is relevant. thylacine60 Arr0w

Wouldn’t have thought so without giving up a major player.
Kelly would round out the midfield, the perfect player to work with Cripps and supply the forwards.
This year’s and next year’s 1st rounders as the centrepiece of the trade.
Betts will still need to be replaced and there are options other than Papley if he becomes impossible to land.
Hill from GWS
Rosas from GC
Bolton from Richmond
Lonie from St.K
Stengle from Adelaide
Spargo from Melbourne
Cox from Brisbane
Or maybe there is another Ryan/Rioli tucked away in the wafl ...

Most of those papley alternatives you mentioned are doing nothing for their current clubs while papley is a match winner...

There's no way it's possible to get Papley and Kelly is there?

No - but there is a possibility of getting Brad Crouch and Kelly.

Would automatically transform our midfield into an A Grade unit overnight.

It would eat up a large chunk of our spare salary cap though and rule out any possibility of Papley.

... and as a consequence, picking the right one will see us getting a decent level of performance for much, much less.

I want Hill. GWS really, really didn't want him to leave; they extended his contract last year, after he'd played a single game.

Papley / Williams
Papley / B Crouch
Papley / Perryman or Caldwell
With the addition of either wines or another kpd depth player, should be our plan.

If Sydney want to delay discussions till the end of trade week then we should immediately try for Kelly.
They have all year to discuss possible outcomes.

As much as I rate Kelly, for the price and amount of games a year he plays it's not worth us paying up. That stinks of a north play especially if they move Sideshow on.

Papley has to be no.1 target...a match winner and we dont have much small forward depth. Betts will retire this year or next.

He's the best or second best of his position in the comp with Cameron...where would crouch rank on the list of midfielders? 50th best?

We also have high draft pick mids who could develop into a crouch...like kennedy, dow, stocker and kemp.

Kelly would be a free agent so costs nothing other that $$$$. I think this is similar to what Gaff did.

He intentionally signed a 2yr deal with an option (his) to extend. If that option isn’t triggered then he becomes a free agent.

Question is how big a salary are we willing to pay?

Kelly isn’t a FA until the end of 2021.

I agree with the sentiment that we need a match winner in the forward line that isn't a KPF with the impending retirement of Eddie.

I disagree and think that it's a bit disingenuous to state that Crouch would be ranked the 50th best midfielder... I would argue that he would be in the 15-25 range pending he support he receives on the outside.

He adds known talent and ability to our thin midfield ranks and being a free hit (FA) we shouldn't look the gift horse in the mouth.

I'm not yet sold on any Kennedy, Dow, Kemp, Stocker at this stage - but I guess we wouldn't know what they can provide if we didn't play them over Crouch.

Papley has more grunt and more of what we need.
Of course Kelly would be good, if not great, but Papley is the better immediate fit.

Who would have thought that some may even have Papley in the discussion with Kelly, only a couple of years ago.

If Sydney want to put talks on Papley back to the end of trade week, we should **** right off.

Either it's done and done early, to both side's satisfaction, or they're going to try to be clever out of a desire to save face and/or have a bob both ways. Either he's leaving, or he's not; if he's not, let's not spend any time sinking further costs into what will never happen.

My message to them would be very ****ing clear: we have all year. You have a choice: either he's leaving, and you want to work with us to accommodate an outcome you are content to take, or he's not and you're wasting our time. Do not waste our time, or we'll go discuss Ian Hill, Orazio Fantasia, Izak Rankine with their respective clubs. You are not in sole possession of a gamebreaking small forward.

We all want a A grader, but can we find another hidden gem like Pitto. Can we get these players fit like cockatoo from Geelong and Langdon from Collingwood . Are they worth a risk or not. I like our list but we just need to fill a hole or 2.

Cockatoo I can see Geelong letting go to have a fresh start, but I thought Collingwood were pretty invested in Langdon??? I know his injuries of late have been bad, but not so bad they'd write him off yet.
