I had his brother Will Combe on the list but the list but the write-up was taking too much time. Couldn't find Cam or Will on the register for draft list.


Would be more confident in Will as he has shown that he doesn't need center square time to shine. Cam would have a shot at being a defensive mid.

Jack Hayes??

If a club needs extra tall depth, he would be a good option. Being able to have an impact outside the forward line this season helps. Very consistent performer.

I have watched a lot of SANFL football this year, both on 7plus and the live pass. Here are my rankings and thoughts on the players that are available at this draft and midseason next year.

1/ Mitch Duval

Standout attributes:
Intercept marking, composure

Strong interceptor, good pack mark, capable in 1-on-1 scenarios, good athlete and doesn't waste the ball. Unlike some others he doesn't have an obvious weakness that might inhibit a transfer to the AFL.

Ideally he would play as an intercepting half-back floating through packs. However, West Adelaide has left him in many last line scenarios which he handled with composure. He isn't someone who needs freedom to launch at every ball to have an impact.

He was very good this year but I expect better next year considering his rate of improvement coming from amateur football to the SANFL.



2/ Tom Highmore

Standout attributes:
Intercept marking, courage

Was so defensively dominant early in the season that some teams were desperate not to kick down the line when they saw him in position. He has the edge on Duval in his ability to play key position and his ability to have dominant games at this level. Duval has the edge in decision making, defensively and offensively. Tom makes the occasional mistake such as trying to mark when he should definitely punch.

Ultimately, he has a long history of high level performances and he is someone you can rely on to get into the right spot and put his body on the line.


3/ Daniel Fahey-Sparks

Standout attributes:
Contested marking, competitiveness

He played as an under-sized ruck this year but he is a KPP prospect at AFL level. He ticks most boxes 196cm, good athlete, good skills and a very good contested mark. 24 contested marks in 14 games is exceptional for someone who spent most of his time jostling in the ruck.

His experience of battling when undersized this year leads to a lot of confidence that he will do well in tough match-ups as a key back.

His final match of the year suggests that he is too good for the level. 49 hitouts, 4 contested marks and 5 clearances is a massive game by any measure.


4/ James Rowe

Standout attributes:
Reading ball off hands, finishing

The best forward in the league at 21. His ability to read the ball off hands in both marking situations and clearances is at a very rare level. Watching him you start to be surprised if he isn't in the perfect position.

47 goals, 11 behinds is an insane display of accuracy. Not all shots were easy plenty came from difficult snaps, shots near 50 or were in pressure situations.

He isn't going to impact as a defensive tackler but there aren't many small forwards who are better goal scorers or playmakers.

5/ Jacob Wehr

Standout attributes:
kicking, distance-gained

You notice two things very quickly. He is still a very slim player but has a powerful and accurate left foot kick. There would be some concerns with how he would fit in defensively but AFL clubs are always looking for elite footskills.

He has decent pace and some decent evasive tricks which will be useful at the higher level when the pressure is applied.

He is a rapid improver and was very impactful in the finals, especially in the game breaking 3rd quarter of the prelim win over South Adelaide.

6/ Rhyan Mansell

Standout attributes:
Pace, defensive impact plays

Along with Lachie Jones, Rhyan was a standard setter for hardness and defensive actions in the back half for the Eagles. Smothers, 50/50s, hard tackles and spoils. Made his presence felt and can make the big play.

He doesn't read the flight as well as some others but makes up for it in closing speed.

His greatest weakness currently is his inconsistent disposal which is quite a drawback considering he is capable of finding the ball consistently.

He should be in the frame for clubs looking for a hard shutdown defender.

7/ Callum Park

Standout attributes:
Distance gained, kicking

Impressive ball mover who will only get better as he grows into his frame. Established himself as Glenelg's primary rebounder at the end of the season averaging 8.5 rebounds for the last 6 games.

His value is highly dependent on how he develops his defensive and intercept game in order to fit into a team.

8/ Lachlan McNeil

Standout attributes:
Clean hands below knees, skill by hand

McNeil has been a well rounded player this season.

His standout attribute has been his ability to make clean pick-ups while on the move and hit a teammate with a quick release handball. By foot he is reliable but not particularly damaging.

A good 20m of burst pace helps his game inside and out. He can win the contested ball but it wasn't his main strength this year as he was outmuscled by some larger mids.

Started to hit the scoreboard consistently and was voted 4th best on ground in the Grand Final which underlined his in season development.


9/ Beau McCreery

Standout attributes:
Strength, tackling

Wasn't the most prolific goal scorer as a medium forward with 15 goals for the year. His main strength comes from his pressure able to catch players with his pace and nail tough tackles with his strength. He wouldn't give Lachie Jones the option of brushing him off in the Prelim final for example. Offensively it allows him to stand-up in or break weaker tackles. He doesn't win many marking contests so his scope might be more as a mid/forward instead of a true medium forward.

10/ Luke Parks

Standout attributes:
Contested marking, defensive flexibility

Put simply, if you take 24 contested marks in your first year of state league football you deserve AFL consideration. An exceptional mark for his age and size, his overhead skills allowed Glenelg to play him on true talls such as Sam Overall during the year. The one attribute that holds him back is his disposal efficiency and consistency. It isn't AFL standard yet.


11/ Hayden Sampson

Standout attribute:
line-breaking

Sampson had a very good year, breaking lines and kicking goals from the wing and half forward. Would be a useful small forward option to add both playmaking and pressure.
