I learnt when we.had the State wide blackout how inept we are in a genuine crisis.

We will see that ineptness and raise you

All the talk about whether the men’s game will go ahead and yet there are 6 women’s games this weekend🤨
It’s mainly about the crowd isn’t it, given they’ve said they’ll still paltry in front of empty stadiums

The handling of the Grand Prix seems to have been astonishingly inept. This morning in the car I heard that the boss of the GP said it would be going ahead, gates opening at 8:45 (or whenever). About 90 minutes later I see on the news that it's going ahead but no crowd. Scenes of people lining up at the gates but they can't go in. Nek minnit, it's called off completely.

WTF?

I have heard a rumour / story that the Vic govt was reluctant to pull the pin because $$$. The fallout / follow up stories could be interesting.

Does the NRL look stupid for having people there last night or only if one of the spectators has corona and attended.

I think the longer the AFL leave it to make a decision the more annoyed the fans will be, we're all gonna lose money here, get on the front foot and declare early their intentions.

also lol Port, this happening in their 150 anniversary year and the prison bar jumper to be worn in front of no one, Kochie will be mega pissed.

International Event, and nobody wanted to be the one responsible for calling it off because of all the financial interests involved.

In the end the Vic Govt banned the spectators, but didn't call off the race itself. The FIA put out a nothing statement via tweet, which literally said nothing. Eventually the teams rebelled and forced the FIA to cancel it. The drivers were all wondering WTF they were even doing in Melbourne... and then one of the McLaren team members tested positive. That was the final straw.

What's going on in Australia now is a failure of leadership (hardly surprising with Scotty from Marketing in charge). Scotty from Marketing doesn't want to be the one to take ownership of the decision to shutdown large events, so he's waiting for the event organisers to do it themselves. They, in turn, are waiting on instructions/leadership from the Govt, which isn't forthcoming because Scotty is a marketer who knows nothing about leadership. As a result, nobody knows if the AFL or NRL games will be played, whether they'll be played in empty stadia, until panicked organisers are forced to make their own decisions at the very last minute.

so Dan Andrews gets a free pass does he? considering it a rolling Victorian government deal that has the Grand Prix in Australia

Look at the F1 fiasco. I wonder how many people travelled from interstate to attend, let alone from overseas

I hope they can get a few rounds played but it's probably inevitable enough players will catch the bug that they have to suspend the season. Maybe they can suspend for a month or two and go with a 17 game minor round to have a shortened season. Hopefully teams can recover enough in the time off to resume playing competitively.

From a club selfish point of view, I hope they can achieve a near normal season result (this season of all seasons for us) and we can realise the draft picks we'll end up with given how we're shaping up and the hard work Reid & Hamish have put in in recent seasons.
One positive if the season is cancelled we wont have the disastrous season that everyone is predicting[/QUOTE]

First time in the history of our Club, a coach has gone through a season undefeated. :drunk:

Dan Andrews waited as long as he could for direction from the Feds. The Feds refused to provide any leadership or decision making ability, so he was forced to make the call himself - at the very last possible minute.

This is happening all over the place. State Govts and private organisations (e.g. the FIA/AFL/NFL/CA) are waiting for leadership, direction & instruction from the Federal Government. As usual, all Scotty cares is how he looks in front of the camera and how he can spin things to blame the ALP, and how quickly he can return the budget to surplus after the crisis has passed. While his interest in saving SMEs is reasonable, what we really need is a proper strategy for containing the virus, proper instruction for how to get tested, and information about how things will cope when the peak hits. All of that latter stuff is where the real leadership kicks in, and for much of it all we hear is the sound of crickets chirping.

what a cop out- he is a state premier in charge of his event - HE should have made a call regardless. Look at the NBA, look at the NHL, they made calls without waiting for government. Leadership comes from all quarters and waiting for others shows exactly what you said - a lack of leadership..but it is from themselves

It’s going to be interesting to see if the Feds initiate the Bio-security act

Yes, there's a lack of leadership from Andrews - because he in turn is suffering from a lack of leadership at the Federal level. At least he made the right decision, shutting down the crowds before the main events started (no F1s on track yesterday, and V8s only had practice sessions).

Talking out of your ass again.

I'm getting on a cruise ship tomorrow, going to NZ for 2 weeks. Princess & Viking have both cancelled all new cruises (i.e. not already in progress) for the next 2 months. I'm sailing with Royal Caribbean, who haven't announced any plans for cancelling cruises... yet. Safe to say that I'm watching my email closely, and monitoring announcements from the Govt re: closing the borders.

My folks arrived home that cruise on Tuesday. I haven’t seen them yet, though they sounded healthy on the phone

Which part is false? We know you idolise and deify Scotty from Marketing, but surely even you can't argue that he's providing anything in the way of leadership in the current crisis?
And we know you hate Scott Morrison and any Politician that's not of the left with every morsel of your soul. :straining:

Great little ship, "Radiance of the Seas". Was on her in 2018. Not too big, not to small. Lots of hand sanitiser available. :thumbsu:

My favourite cruise ship of all time. I last sailed on her in 2011. Unfortunately, her popularity has meant that her cruises have usually been too expensive for my liking, so I've ended up on Rhapsody or Voyager/Explorer.

I agree, she's a great little ship. Not too big, not too small. I love the stabilised pool tables, the hotdog stand, and the Brazilian steak house restaurant.

A few years ago I was on the Oosterdam (Holland America Line), when we passed Radiance going through the Wooden Canal (at the bottom of New Caledonia). Oosterdam is the worst ship I've ever been on, and I had massive pangs of jealousy for the passengers enjoying themselves on the Radiance.

The NHL didn't wait and it was not Andrews that made the call to cancel the F! race - it was F1 themselves

A statement was issued at 10:15am (AEDT) by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.

At 9am today the Australian Grand Prix Corporation was advised by Formula One of their intention to cancel all Formula One activity at the Formula One Australian Grand Prix.
In light of this decision and updated advice this morning from the Chief Health Officer of the Victorian Government’s Department of Human and Health Services, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation confirms the Formula One Australian Grand Prix is cancelled immediately.
Last night a member of the McLaren Racing team tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. A further seven individuals returned negative results, confirming that they do not have the COVID-19 virus.
Additionally, a ninth individual has been assessed and tested for the COVID-19 virus, with the results of this test pending. This individual is not associated with any Formula One team, the FIA or associated suppliers.
Our first priority is the safety of everyone including attendees, our personnel, all event partners and members of the local community.
Further information regarding refunds for ticket holders will be communicated in due course.
Now I detest the guy , but the mayor of New York De Blasio has taken the bit between his teeth and prohibited mass gatherings and that has closed broadway and other events - he showed leadership while the feds were formulating their plans...State premiers are in charge of state GOVERNMENTS and should show their own leadership regardless of the feds if the feds have not finalised their own procedures. There is no more a defense for Andrews as there is for the Feds so to act like it is all the feds fault is a huge cop out
