Barrett:
“I expect Goldy to open his mind up to the possibilities that were round last year.”

Doesn’t sound like Goldy shopping himself, more like a journalist giving an opinion based off nothing.

Only Forwards:

"I expect Goldy to continue to play for North Melbourne for the next 4 years and will wind up having pulled on the blue and white the second most of any person ever"

It'll be JMac, Pittard and Williams that have riled him up. If you remember back to 2017 Tef thought it was criminally unfair that Tiges won the flag with four A graders and 18 spuds, while the best we'd ever got was a couple of preliminary spankings.

This looks on the money. I forgot that he's a big Marley fan. It is pretty shocking how quickly things went downhill for Marley and Jasper. I can relate to the view that your loyal soldiers should be forgiven for a bad season, so in most years you would expect them to be kept on the list.

So, yeah, I fully get the angst on one level, but I think it's a calculated gamble that has far more upside than downside. We simply won't miss these players after next year.

I have angst and apprehension about what we are doing and how rapidly it is occurring.

Not specifically tied to the players that were cut (outside of Jmac, Pittard and Maj probably deserved better, I mean we gave Durdin a farewell game?)

Prior to the season start we were talking up finals.
During the season we had a longer injury list than we have had in I dunno, forever. Including the bloke everything is built around.
We had to move interstate while systematically cutting the line coaches.
The version of the lower level games were scratch matches where we made up numbers for opposition sides.
We unflinchingly played players out of position. Higgo attended* how many center bounces?

Post season we immediately cut 11
We have had the whole Brown situation.
Rumours of Senior players being given the option of getting out if they want.
We got rid of Jade 1 year into a 3 year contract.
We cut all but 3 coaches?
We are apparently pursuing Roos.**
We have John Blakey coming***

I mean we are making big changes on the back of a season that was in all likelihood an absolute outlier. Don't get me wrong change absolutely needed to happen. But knowing when to stop, so not easy. I mean 1 club succeeds and 17 clubs fail every year. winning flags is not easy.

This is all very ballsy, but geez it is a whole bunch of things we have to get right here.

* Higgo barely attended any. If footballers are resources and winning games is the aim you need to deploy your resources where they are needed the most. There were occasions were we could have done with him in the middle. Not even to win, just to not look like rabble. His non movement is as bloody minded as anything Scott ever coached.

** I have previously posted the stats of Roos and his disciples success. It is not a great read. 2 flags from 36 seasons coached.

*** Blakey took the culture we had to Sydney and now we have to get him in to re-instill that same stuff back with us. If this is the case we should feel bloody ashamed.

Bad timing for them to be out of contract. Reverse the situation with a handful of others on the list who are currently contracted and they’d still be there and the others gone.

All valid points but I read it differently, firstly and most importantly I don’t think the changes were made on this season alone. Having the young guys at the coal face is investing in the future. You’re completely right the last administration should feel ashamed but I can’t see how we can condemn Rawlings and Shaw for that, in fact I commend them for endeavouring to rectify it.

The teams that got rid of Marley and Jasper don’t seem to be missing them!

There'd be plenty of interest in Goldie if true.
Geelong, GWS & WB should all be offering first round picks as a mere starting point. If any of these teams had him playing in the ruck, they’d all be winning finals this year. All of them have significant ruck deficiencies!
WB has Dunkley playing ruck FFS

I can honestly say, I have zero angst towards what we are doing as a club other than whether Rhyce can become a good coach.

Rawlings is bringing a new set of standards where results are not expected, they are demanded. If you are not up to delivering whatever it is you are employed to be delivering then thanks and goodbye.

That is the bloody mindedness that football clubs need imo. It sets and sustains a culture.

You know who else has this bloody mindedness? Peter Bell. Funny that.

To me it is this.

I think back to comments made by players who have come to our club. One that springs to mind was Pittard talking about being welcomed as who he was and allowed to play with freedom. Same with Polec and recent rumour about his run in with Rhyce after being asked to play a role which was outside what he expected.

Now look at where Port are compared to us. Rhyce is trying to build a stronger culture with players who know their role and will follow through with the direction given otherwise we will end up with results like we have had this year.

It feels as though we have become the nice family club, and we have lost the mongrel we need to win games.

Going back to Brads time people complained that he played favourites and wouldn’t drop anyone. Now we have the reverse.

I think back to the 90’s and know that there is no way that Pagan and Carey would have accepted individuals over hard, uncompromising players fulfilling the roles given to them. If they deviated they were out.

And I feel that is what Rhyce is trying to get back to.

The importance of ball use in the back half is no longer underestimated.

It was poor team balance to have Marley, Pittard and LMac in our back 6 - whoever thought that was ever going to work needs a kick up the backside.

At the start of 2020 it may have been a 3 way draw between who would have survived but with LMac having a great year there was no decision to make - Pittard and Marley become fringe (they were both steak knives anyway) and being uncontracted needed to make way.

We still need to address ball use out of the back half - but the answer is certainly not Pittard and Marley.

This seems to be the crux of it. I hate to use an infantile, throwaway cliche, which probably shows my psychological shortcomings but at the end of the day no one player is bigger than the club.
And it goes with the territory! Surely all of them embarked on a career as a footballer with their ******* eyes open.
I also highly doubt the club has cut them loose with no support as they transition to a new stage in their life and career.

And let's face it, we probably provided them with a greater opportunity and playing time than most other clubs would have allowed.... some would never have got on the park at other clubs...let's not feel too hard done by here minimum any of them would be paid would be 250-300k for doing something they love.... now they will just find a job like the rest of us...

Wow, I know some would be looking to get him but thought he'd want to finish his career at North. Wonder if the blowout and rebuild talk has pushed him away.

If true? Pushed away?

Right now, this is just Barrett, the jilted lover's annual and incessant BASELESS 'opinion'
