I have:

1. Ugle-Hagan (matched Dogs)
2. Hollands (Crows)
3. McDonald (Essendon)
4. Campbell (Swans)
5. Thilthorpe (Hawks)
6. Bruhn (GC)
7. Phillips (North)
8. Grainger-Barras (North)

I may have engineered my own outcome but I can't be too sure.

I cannot see Clarkson passing up on DGB.

Pies are ******* dreaming if they think anyone will pay 800k of treloars contract and for five years
And if they do find someone it will be for a late pick or even a pick loss for the pies.

Can't see the dogs moving Dunkley for him unless they are getting the pies and * 1st's next year.

I think the deal would need to be better than 5 & GC's 2021 first for 2. If it's with an eye to take McDonald and what we'd be getting is likely Thilthorpe/Phillips and a pick that could well end up past 10 next year I'd just take McDonald.

It would have to be ridiculous as trading pick 2 in a rebuild is, ridiculous.

I
Unpopular opinion, but anyway....

We're three years into a rebuild already and the silver lining to this year is we got more games into some exciting young talent. Cunnington being out put more responsibility onto Jy's shoulders and he handled it very well. LDU isn't far off. Luke McDonald and Jed Anderson had career-best years. Ben McKay looks good. And we already have two first round picks coming in.

I think we've done some good business in getting Josh Walker in the door, and clearing out inconsistent or good but flawed players like Macmillan, Marley Williams and Pittard makes room for Perez and Kyron, and A Corr adds to that.

There's a change in attitude in recruiting that I really like, where we are filling holes rather than looking for stars. The Bulldogs made premiership players out of Shane Biggs and Joel Hamling. Richmond could have gone down the scorched earth policy having bombed out in week one of the finals in 14 and 15, and finishing 14th or something in 2016, but instead they brought in some role players, made some internal changes and the rest is history.

Out of interest, I did a best 22, assuming we don't lose anyone else. It's a sliding doors team, because it's not happening, but it was worth the exercise.

J Walker Tarrant Corr
McDonald McKay Perez
Dumont Simpkin Polec
Zurhaar Larkey Thomas
Taylor Brown Turner
Goldstein Cunnington LDU
Anderson Scott Hayden Higgins

Depth: EVW Atley Hall Mahony Xerri Bonar Garner Ziebell Tyson Campbell W Walker 2 x first rounders and whatever else we get in 2020 draft

Do I think we win a flag next year? No. But do we contend for finals in 21, and make a serious run at it in 22? Yeah, I think we could have. But even if everything goes to our new plan, we don't contend for finals until 2023, at best. And if that doesn't work, it's another rebuild, which makes it close to ten years out of the finals. Now that's mediocre.

I get the appeal of the rebuild, I do. It makes some sense. But the successful ones have taken an eternity to be successful - Luke Hodge didn't play a final until game 130-odd. Dustin Martin's first final was game 86 and his first winning final was game 176. Brett Deledio had seen so many rebuilds that he gave up after 200 games and left. And Matthew Kreuzer was a generational talent you could build a team around, and played two finals.

And yes every premiership team has lots of top end talent, but so do all of the sh*t teams.

Needless to say I disagree fundamentally with the strategy we are undertaking. But we're doing it, so I want to make sure we get the best possible return for our players.

The fact we won't get anywhere near the two first rounders some posters were saying we should get is evidence that the strategy is risky. I sincerely hope this works, because if it doesn't, it's going to be ugly.
I'm with you 100% big_e.
People are countering with "but we had one of the oldest list demographics and finished 17th. Which is true. That's what the 11 delistings were about countering and apart from the odd "I thought this player might have still given us something" nobody has really questioned that. Everyone is for rejuvenating the list.
What people don't support is getting rid of some of our best players for mediocre draft picks. How the hell does trading Ben Brown for a mid 20s pick in a compromised draft make us better? Perhaps for a high first rounder, but seriously? Mid second rounders are for Braydon Preuss type operators. If you could get a first rounder for Higgins of course you'd take it, but not something in the late twenties.

Archer and Brady have both said as recently as last week that we were supposed to rebuild 3 years ago but didn’t.

The rebuild has now begun, and thankfully we have a head start with an exciting young group and excellent draft hand.

Yes you would have to betting on us not improving next year for it to be ridiculously in your favour and while history has shown we have never finished better than 14th. Next year who knows

Nobody is against some form of rebuild. People are against losing good players for sh#t draft picks. You can spin the justification any way you want.

The best strategy is to wait till draft night and hope Crows don’t pick Logan and then a kings ransom can be negotiated for our pick. Generally teams pay well overs on draft night.

The Crows May take Thrillthope ( spelling) as he his a local and they are battered. and bruised after the Crouch debacle. The last thing they need is pick one asking for a trade in 2 years So they may well go conservative. Perditions would like to see us put 5 and next years first to them as they would likely get there man, save face and get another quality pick

The shift to a points based draft system means that there are no 'shit' picks until the points run out at #73. Accumulating picks above that number allows for trading up to a better position - and if we need proof close to home, his name is Tarryn Thomas

Wouldnt mind picking up Matty Parker now that he’s been delisted. We obviously need to get players in, but I feel he’s a low-risk acquisition that could pay off

I brought him up a while back as an OOC I thought we should try to trade for, is a real worker and hard as nails. That he's delisted now makes me even keener.

Whats the alternative? Continue to finish 6-12 as we have done for the last 20 years?

Even with Higgins and Brown, where do we finish next year? Do the potentially extra three wins in 2021 mean anything in the end?

We need to bring in more talent, and the only way to do that is trade out establish players for the most valuable draft picks we can get. Then hope the recruiting team selects the right guys. We have been on the treadmill of mediocrity for so long, we need to take a chance. It will be painful, but I don't see what other strategy the club could go with, given the list demographic in 2020, and where we finished.
This strategy for me is a no brainer.

But in saying that, we need to make sure we get the best deal possible when trading out or in players.

Great post and I don't don't disagree on direction we are taking in principle.

Your last paragraph is important though.

We better get it right in both trading, but also drafting and development.

Thats right, and we will take logan mcdonald with pick 2

Brad Johnson ok BB - “second rounder”

Brad Johnson on Dunkley - “will change your club, an outstanding acquisition and possible the greatest player of all time”

w***er

What he said was actually insulting to *.

I hate them sure, but Johnson's comments were ridiculous.

what is all the crap about moving on #2 in the media. we take mcdonald and worry about the go home factor in 2 years time if it even eventuates. every one is saying Essendon should try and get pick 2 off us..... heck me arent they in Victoria also.. Pick Mcdonald North and build our future around him and Thomas etc etc
