I was thinking about those few years where we went through that whole ‘war chest’ thing and offered ridiculous money and years to lure players. Aints followed suit.

It resulted in an era of some crazy record deals being signed by (other) clubs in an attempt to protect their top players and stop them from moving out. Cause and reaction.

While we failed at the time, are we now seeing some fruit? with Collingwood the first domino to fall? Throw GWS in there as well.

The Q & A was a good listen. From what they said, we are organised , planned and have a direction. The workplace is happy and supportive.
Either we are on the right path or this bunch could sell ice cubes to the Eskimo’s.

I'd be letting Collingwood know that we intend to bid on McInnes at pick 11, unless they can come up with a compelling case for us not to. Their compelling case should look a little something like:

North - 11, 39, 2021 2nd round and 2021 3rd round
Collingwood - 14, 16, 2021 1st round

They are a genuine rabble at the moment from top to bottom and they need a strong leader to bring the group together, which is something that I don't and have never associated with Nathan Buckley. There is every chance that they plummet down the ladder next year.

As for pick 2, I personally wouldn't be moving it on, but if Essendon were as desperate as we all know they are for a decent big forward then they would have to pay through the arse for us to even entertain it. Something along the lines of:

North - 2, 16 (from Collingwood trade above)
Essendon - 6, 7, 8, 2021 1st round

It's an obscene price to pay, but if they want the 'generational' key forward then that's the price, otherwise we walk away from the table, grab who we want with pick 2 and they can enjoy having Peter Wright and James Stewart as their key forwards.

I reckon they will get several takers for their 2 x 1st round picks. GC at 5 or one of the scums picks.

I reckon GWS will also be going hard to trade up. I could see them forking over 10, 13 & 15 for pick 2 or 4.

North: 10, 11, 13, 15 & 30 then puts us in a good position to buy back in to pick 4 or 5. Perhaps GC pick 5 for 10 & 15? This allows them to get a player in the 1st round ahead of Davies.

GC pick 5 for 10 & 15 = North: 5, 11, 13, 30 & 39 = 1 from Phillips/DGB/Tilthorpe + 2 from Cox/Reid/O'Driscoll/MacRae/Cook/Laurie + 2 from Callow/Heath/Ford/Neale.

vs

North current: 2, 11, 30 & 39 = 1 from McDonald/ Hollands/Phillips/DGB/Tilthorpe + 1 from Cox/Reid/O'Driscoll/MacRae/Cook/Laurie + 2 from Callow/Heath/Ford/Neale.

Would folks forfeit a chance at McDonalds or Hollands for a choice of Phillips/DGB/Tilthorpe, if it meant they could grab two players from the Cox/Reid/O'Driscoll/MacRae/Cook/Laurie pool rather than one?

It's tempting.

Phillips + Cox + O'Driscoll + Callow/Ford & Heath/Neale would be a significant haul from a list perspective.

Just had an interesting thought re: the midseason draft/waiver system. Not sure exactly how it works, but with all the talk that there will be lots of late bloomers missing out this year because they didn't play therefore making next years draft stronger. Does this mean, if we keep a spot or 2 open, once the u18 start up, we could pick up one of these kids thats looks like he will go high in the draft this season. Especially with a lot of teams only taking 1 or at most 2 in this years draft, it could be a sneaky way to get some elite talent in on the cheap.

I like this a lot - but I would like to keep our second rounder for 2021
Apart from that, email to Glen Luff and Scotty Clayton, get the ball rolling

I don't think Gold Coast will do it (did I read somewhere that there was a chance that they only use one pick this year or was that someone else???) and who knows what * do. I thought GWS might, but how many draft picks do they honestly need and mid teens picks as well? I actually think Adelaide is in the best position to get something done. Having lost Crouch and potentially losing the other Crouch next year, they need a Midfielder like a McInnes type, they have pick 9 and they also have a lot of late picks that they could trade to the pies for points for when a bid does come in.

Anyway, I guess the point of the exercise was to show that the pies were ripe for the picking and that I think we should be doing whatever we can to get our hands on their 1st round pick next year as it is going to be worth it's weight in gold.

So long as they have nominated for this year's draft they will be eligible to be picked up in the 2021 midseason. Last year you could also create space with long term injuries and retirements, so it may not just be case of keeping spots up our sleeve.

Nobody can bid on Davies or Jeffries, they are pre listed to GC. Its part of the assistance package they got with the AFL, which is a disgrace really. Problem is, the average fan doesn't understand how much of a leg up it is for the GC.
GC could take only one pick to the draft, thus they have great incentive to trade up.
5, 27, GC 2021 first for pick 2.
Use 30 and 27 to try and get a pick in the teens.

What we need to make sure we do, is bid on the academy kids early, to make sure clubs pay a premium for them. It increases the value of our own later picks if we do.

Nobody can "bid"?!

If that's the case they have them guaranteed at pick 102 & 120!!!

I'd be surprised if we did that. I'd realistically weight it at 5, 27 & 10-12 2021, for pick 2, and I would rate a pick 2 for GWS 10, 13 & 15 trade as better.

Effectively it's weighing up 5 & 27 against a pair of 10-12's. I'd take the pair every time.

Pies ain’t dropping to the bottom of the ladder.....they play 12-15 games at the G....barely leave the state and are kissed on the dick with blockbusters. CorruptFL won’t allow it.

You think GC will finish that high in 2021? I think with the GC package we get pick 5, another top 7 pick and 27.

High risk. You are potentially missing one of the top three. Also relies on two other club swap. what if one of them pulls the pin 10 minutes into the selections. Suggest we stick with 2. I think it's more likely that 11 and 2nd rounders may be packaged up. But it's all supposition. Over to you Mr Luff.

I dunno about that mate, it's more like "spreading the risk" for me.

It's not claiming to be any cheer squad for the idea, just stating that it's tempting.

I am certainly not in the "McDonald/Hollands is a guaranteed messiah" camp, and as far as I'm concerned most of that is just clueless repetition, so bear this in mind with how it shapes my thinking.

I genuinely don't see them playing finals next year and I think there is a chance that they are bottom 6. They only just scraped into the finals this year and they have weakened their list. I can't see any team that finished above them falling below them and of the teams that finished below them, I can see Melbourne, GWS and Carlton at the very least going above them.

I too think they miss the finals next season.
