I'm interested to see what kind of year Steele has. Ratten has said he wants him to focus on winning the footy a lot more this year and it showed good signs in the early part.

If he can get those numbers up the need for another contested ball winner wouldn't be so high, especially with Zak Jones also winning plenty of contested footy.

Can't be too choosy I know but I think we need a bit more class in there and I think there's a bitof that in the draft.
I think Steele will have a good year but even if he does we need someone to replace Hannebery’s midfield spot eventually so I’d be all over Crouch as a FA and using our first pick on a mid. That would be the dream result.

24/06/2014 · Talent wise, Petracca is worthy of a top five pick, and on output, he’s number one. He’s a strong bodied forward-cum-midfielder, but to pigeon hole him as one or the other is to misjudge him."

There's 4 that rate him highly....

Yes he was rated highly, but not necessarily highest.
And the second one, "AFL ready body " was obviously way off the mark given how long its taken him to hit his stride.

Knightmare's early analysis was well short of the mark.

I'm hoping to hell that Byrne, Bytel or both will turn out OK.
But yeah i'd hope our first rounder is a mid.

2005: Hawks , Ellis, immediately in front of Josh Kennedy and Pendlebury. Then Dowler, the pick before Paddy Ryder. Bargain later pick Andrew Swallow.
2006: Gibbs ( Carlton) ,Gumbleton ( Ess), Hanson ( Nth ) Lleuenberger ( Lions ) , ahead of Boak. Then Thorp ( Hawks) ahead of Selwood.
Was a horrid couple of drafts for the Hawks , they also got Renouf and Jarryd Morton and little Josh Kennedy who they gave away.

2007: Kreuzer, Cotchin , then Masten , Morton, Grant, Myers , Palmer, Henderson, McEvoy , Dangerfield.
2008: JACK WATTS , ahead of Naitenui and Stephen Hill :D
2009: Scully and Trengove ahead of Martin, then Morabito ahead of Cunnington. Then everyone ahead of Fyfe
2010: David Swallow and Bennell then Day ahead of Gaff. Issac Smith 18th.
2011: Lots of GWS talent, but Ross was pick 25 and he's a better player than 13 or so taken before him.
2012: Whitfield , but O'ROurke (2nd ) , Plowman , Toumpas ahead of Stringer and Macrae.

Not worth tanking over.

Then your perfect outcome would be Crouch as a free agent and hit the draft with our first.

I would snap your hand off if that was offered today.

I would say we are courting Couch and one other inside mid with the hope of landing one.

We have a young inside mid Beast in Bytel in the wings who has had his development arrested by covid, same as Byrne.

Without seeing how they are developing, we can't gauge (here on this armchair expert's forum)what we need in the mids.

But if we got Crouch and kept our first, I would be pretty bloody impressed.

Williams would be on top of my list.

That prelim he played last year in the middle was terrific. Unfortunately he's another one that gets pigeon holed to a back flank.

25 touches, 16 contested, 10 clearances and a goal.

Williams and Clark rotating on ball/back flank would be pretty exciting.

And a free agent.

Crazy to think the Hawks followed up hodge, Mitchell, rough, franklin, Lewis with dowler and thorp. Also crazy to think it didn't have much impact in their 4 flags.

If lists/cap are going to be squeezed because of COVID then I could see us making some tough calls on guys like Ryder and Carlisle while also trimming the likes of Savage and Dunstan.

Front end as many deals into this season as possible.

Load up back ended deals to Williams AND Crouch and blow teams out of the water.

Draft someone like Wil Parker (classy wing/half back) and we would be looking pretty sweet heading into a full season next year.

I'd like to think Clark will also end being more of a mid than anything.

This page has color coded, the players who wound up with a premiership.
When they rate players really highly because they are a "prermiership player " show them this.

As a Saints fan I'm pretty aware of that. Our history is littered with superstars that never won a flag. And the majority of premiership players are GOP's to be honest. How I wish CJ, Rob Eddy and Andrew McQualter made that list of GOP's.

I think I was more adding to the 'managed to stuff up two top 10 draft picks' but it didn't stuff up their premiership ambitions' discussion. Although when you pick those 5 players you can probably afford to stuff up a decade of drafts and you'll be ok with it. Similar to us when we nailed Roo, Kosi, Ball, Dal, Joey, Goddard I suppose. (Yes I know we could have probably nailed some of those picks better but roll with it).

So yeah, we can stuff up the Paddy pick but if JB, Dunstan, Gresh, Long, Hunter, Coff, King all come on and we trade in some handy types she'll be right.

Caldwell Is a jet. I think he actually barracked for us, if he keeps getting left out he may want out. We have the resources just very low chance.

Seriously?

We had Roo near the end, Bruce was a defender and Membrey still to play a game for us and unproven.

Where is all the revision that Petracca was a clear #1? Sure, most people had him at 1 but it was closer than is being represented here. McCartin was the right pick at the time. We needed a KPF and McCartin had shown enough to justify being a top 3 pick. We had pick 1 and took him.

What happened after that, nobody could see coming.

There was a serious trade in place for us to swap #1 and #21 for the Giants #3 and #6.The draft would have then gone - Petracca, Brayshaw, McCartin.

Once the Dees got pick 3 as compo for Frawley that deal was off the table because we couldn't get McCartin.

Had we done the deal we could have taken say peter Wright at #4 and Laverde (who we really rated) at #7. We could have also ended up with Pickett and Cockatoo...

What about De Goey?

Excitement levels through the roof after the Bulldogs game, opens up the trade forum, reads 147 posts about McCartin and Tambling....FMD what a mood killer. Anyone seen Max King? He’s about 6’8, fastest guy on the field and has kicked 4 goals in his first two games. He was the clear no.1 prospect in his draft year before injury and then falls to the Saints at 4. Swings and roundabouts gents. Tambling...FMD.

Yeah. Him, McCartin, (if all goes well) and Members. What a forward line, (two top 10 picks and a proven gun).

I'm not that sold on Crouch. He's a good player and getting him as a RFA wouldn't hurt obviously but I'm not sure he adds that much to us. He accumulates a lot but he is a really average user of the ball. We have plenty of mids who can get a lot of footy. What we need is a mid who can have a huge impact. Hill I hope will be that from a wing. Jones was that on the weekend and if he keeps it up, a massive need is already filled.

Much rather Zac Williams than Crouch..a year younger and more to offer than Crouch which I think what Jones can offer...

I really feel now we don't really need Crouch or Wines now - last draft season I was wanting one of them but after seeing Jones , Gresham get a bundle of inside ball and clearances I feel it will only restrict our youth , because I feel Hunter Clark will be slotting in there in the future as well.
Also having Ross , Hannerbery , Steele and Bytel waiting in the wings bringing someone in would be a expense we don't really need unless we got them as a bargain.
Then again if we could get a Kelly , Whitfield or a Cripps I would change my tune.

Wines in my opinion fits more of a need. He is an elite contested ball winner.

We don’t have a player of that mould.

Crouch is an Elite accumulator who doesn’t do enough damage with the ball. We have a few of those already.

But you take what you can get. Both make us better.

Brad crouch has AVERAGED 28 possies a game for the last 2 years and AVERAGED 12 contested possies.

Hardly any of our mids get those sort of numbers in any given game, let alone get close to averaging it.

I know we have plenty of guys who don't do damage with the ball, but no way do we have anything like the elite accumulator crouch is.
