Lonie is our 2nd best pure small forward.

Criminally under rated by some supporters.
That’s because blokes like Gresham and Billings spend more time in the midfield due to our lack of depth there.
If we pick up Taranto, both Billings and Gresh will spend more time forward and Lonie most likely won’t be required.
Cheaper to have Hind as depth in the VFL on $125k than Lonie on $300k.

You’re right about that. I wasn’t really a huge fan of Lonie recently but after seeing how the merry go round has performed this year Lonie has grown on me.

However, he was our 2nd best small forward before Butler arrived too. I know you’re talking pure small forwards and I love what Gresh brings as a clearance player but with Taranto coming in and his known ability as a small forward I’m sure Gresh becomes at least a 60/40 small forward/mid and possibly more. Kicked 65 goals 50 behinds over 2017/2018. And if we still play a third small forward in Kent we really haven’t lost anything by losing Lonie and have actually upgraded if that’s how it pans out.

So if he gets a late 2nd (unlikely) we’d be nuts not to take it. Either way if we can somehow use the added currency to pull Taranto over the line we should do it.

GWS could do a lot worse than pick up Savage and Webster. They need some good bedrock players.
I agree with you Gringo - and you SS - but I just see them wanting picks. They will want Marshall first, and we will tell them Marshall wants ... and they will say no, cant afford it. Picks it is!

GWS need room, its not that their trying to sign 2 guys, their trying to sign 10 guys. And to keep Cameron (he is their franchise player) they need a bucket of cash. Loose Cameron and they loose the farm, so they have to get him, then all of there young talent. This will push two players on good coin out, not one, thats why its picks.

With Butler up forward, Lonie makes our forward pressure one of the best in the League. With Hind or Parker there, the opposition just walks it out so much easier.

Only one game but should have had 4 goals against GWS, and on one leg.

I love Gresham but Taranto is better than him as pure mid. I agree that we'd be better with both. To me Gresham's ideal role is Robbie Grey or De Goey style forward mid. I'm more trying to work out how we think we'd get the deal done. We must be giving up something.
Getting in a Taranto would allow Gresham to spend more time forward, part of the reason why I wouldn't want to trade Gresh.

With so many academy players in the first round this year, we should be able to get creative to get a first rounder this year to put with our future first to satisfy them. Maybe we could interest them in a Carlisle or Webster type as a sweetener with Corr and Williams leaving? (thats extremely unlikely but lets remain hopeful in these hypotheticals).

Plus, getting rid of Taranto but taking on Gresham's 600k wouldn't do much for their salary cap issues.

On his form this year, absolutely, he's a midfielder i would hope we do not chase and yes Heeney has it all over him. I wonder if we end up going to hard for that elusive mid to back Steele up when a suitable one is not available in the age range the club wants.
What about his form last year when he won a best and fairest in a GF side?

Heeney is older than Taranto and achieved less. He's still yet to make that move into the midfield that everyone keeps predicting despite being halfway through his career.

Lonie will be lucky to stay on the list with or without Taranto. Can't see any currency there, maybe $0.50 in a $1,000,000 deal. Gotta find the other $999999.50 somewhere.
Dogs and Carlton in particularly are very interested in him.

Pick 56 got us Butler who played VFL for the majority of last year. If Lonie could have a good finals series, I reckon we could squeeze a late 30s/early 40s pick out of someone really desperate.

First you want to give GWS two first picks (one being Gresham) for an underperforming Taranto and now you say Lonies worth zero on the market but why would we want to trade Lonie anyway? If you asked me at the end of last year regarding Lonie then sure pack his bags but this year he is clearly putting in and busting his arse out there and is an important member of our starting 22. The forward line does not function properly without him.

As for Gresham, his kicking is poor but his clearance work is elite so it is a conundrum. I'd rather keep him for the time being until we find more midfield depth.

So what gives? Are we both watching AFL? I really want to know your reasoning behind your statements.

Would be very happy with that. As I have said multiple times, something about Lonie just makes us a better team.

We are going to have to find another pick somewhere then... maybe trading Dunstan? If we got Taranto, Dunstan would be even further down the pecking order. But he still have something to offer at AFL level.

Taranto would be like our Dangerfield or Neale signing. Elevates us into the top bracket of the competition. If you have to give away two first rounders you do it.

Don't trade out Gresham in my opinion, he was superb this year before getting injured.

If we are after a guy like Taranto then anyone with currency could go. Doesn't bode well for Lonie.
What currency do you think Lonie has , at best a 3rd round if we were lucky

Taranto is one of those legitimate “at all costs” opportunities if it indeed materialises.
In Satan and Gubby we trust!!

He had a shoulder rebuild this year so he was starting a fair way behind but last year he was a legitimately elite quality mid. Check his age out, his scope to step up another level is very high. It means that with 2 elite quality mids we can't be as easily sat on either.

Thats where Lonie sucks in a lot of people , just because he maybe the pick out of a bad bunch of small forwards , it doesnt make him any good . It just means he is the best of a poor bunch

Heeny is all class and 100% of people who watch AFL know it :)

Taranto was one of the few Giants who played well too. He got 30 possessions in the GF.

Billings and Gresh have both played their best footy in the midfield.

I think you'll find that both would spend pretty close to the same time up the ground if we land Taranto. He simply slots into Seb's spot. If anything its the likes of Kent & Sincas that come under pressure.

Was vigorously nodding reading this until you mentioned Ben Brown
Ben Brown , Why ?
Because I hate the idea of killing King before he is ready for the pounding he will get with an extended season and most likely finals runs if we land Taranto in the next few years without legitimate tall support.

Trading out a piece of our core in Billings or Gresh to bring in Taranto makes no sense.

You want as many of those 22-25 year olds as possible to build together.

Building our midfield and letting Gresh and Billings spend more time forward is ideal.

Rotating those two and the resting midfielders through the Hind/Kent/Lonie spots makes us an infinitely better team.

Trading Gresh or Billings in a deal for Taranto makes us slightly better but still having to play Kent/Hind etc
