If we brought in Taranto and moved Hunter to the midfield full time next year, we would finally have a strong, competitive midfield. But that leaves a spot open at half back.

Would you consider moving Billings to defence as that creative, half back? Uses the ball well, has a good game sense and a good mark for his size. Unsure about how is actual defence skills are but he could work on that. It goes against the thought of playing him at half-forward more where he has been very damaging and can impact the score board, but just thought I would throw it out there.

Was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't mind having a look at him down there.

Because I hate the idea of killing King before he is ready for the pounding he will get with an extended season and most likely finals runs if we land Taranto in the next few years without legitimate tall support.
Why do you think Max is going to break , guys like Hipwood have been playing since 2016 and he is the same weight as Max , im not sure key forwards get bashed into as much as they used to and with another pre season Max could put on another 3-4 kg you would think , i just don't see that the Flemington straight track specialist is gong to help us

Lethlean comes in, offers a fringe mid 5 years and a truckload of cash. Giants rush to match it then he goes after his real target knowing that GWS has just signed a huge chunk of cap space into the fringe mid. Has Giants list manager backed into a corner. Nice Satan.

We should get Caldwell later as well.

Lonie is our 2nd best pure small forward.

Criminally under rated by some supporters.

Who's best return in a season is 16 goals over 6 seasons and average return in a season is 11 goals. Has been up for delisting previously and this has not been a break out year. I would regard him as criminally over rated by Saints supporters.

F

As for Gresham, his kicking is poor but his clearance work is elite so it is a conundrum. I'd rather keep him for the time being until we find more midfield depth.

So what gives? Are we both watching AFL? I really want to know your reasoning behind your statements.

I am not saying Gresham is poor. But Taranto would be a huge trade up and our first round pick is around 14 or 15. My guess is if you asked on the main board "would you swap Taranto for Gresham and pick 14ish?" - majority would say it is a steal.

I don't think you understand the concept of forward pressure. Lonie brings it, Butler brings it, Hind, Kent, Parker lulz

Why don't you throw that question out to the main board. Taranto for Gresham and a first - see how many non-Saints supporters would think we look like idiots.

Well this is the Saints board, maybe you should go back there if this is too much for you. Who cares WTF opposition supporters think?

Question:

If we give up the world, or 2 first rounders anyway, to land Taranto....

A midfielder who is a Best & Fairest winner at a Grand Final team...

And we then end up with a midfield of Steele, Taranto, Jones, Clark, Gresham, Sinclair etc....

Can we then......

Finally STFU about bloody Petracca????

(trade would be worth doing for that alone 😬)

Preferred Petracca over Paddy, just sayin'

Petracca blindfolded > Taranto :)

Billings and Gresh have both played their best footy in the midfield.

I think you'll find that both would spend pretty close to the same time up the ground if we land Taranto. He simply slots into Seb's spot. If anything its the likes of Kent & Sincas that come under pressure.

I think Gresham has played his best footy close to goal. He looked on track to be something pretty special there, he's a good but not elite mid. Ideally he plays a mix. Billings probably early on looked great closer to goal but then started to get psyched out with his set shot conversion.

If we had a gun midfield and were winning regular finals no-one cares about the misses any more. It's born out of frustration.

Isn't that why some of us suggested keeping Bruce a bit longer?

Just caught up on the Taranto rumors.

Its not a matter of "untouchable" its what we get out of the deal.
If you have a 2016 Hilux and you buy a new Ford Ranger, you can get rid of your old Proton ute and move double the stuff .
If you trade your Hilux on your Ranger , you're just a bit better , and the repayments are higher.

I always think there is a limit to how many players we can import , it worries me that we pay them overs to get them to move, and if we keep it up long term we'll come up against the cap.

Coffield , out of contract 2021. If he continues to make advances he's due a big pay rise.
Carlisle , who the hell knows. Potential opening up of cap.
Jones , probably getting paid above average.
Gresham, will probably demand more by 2023.
Hill , on big money
Steele, could be on 750k ish.
Hannebery , has three more years before we get his money back onto the cap. ( could be front loaded , i hope ).
Clark, as with coffield, could be asking for big money by the end of next season if he continues to develop.
King. In two years will need to be paid commensurately to the best player in the AFL, his brother will be jibing him if he earns less.
Marshall. Will want a big increase by the end of 2022.
Howard. Is probably getting more than he was at Port.
Paton. If we keep him, we'll pay him.
Wilkie. Will realise that he's an above average player.

Then there are any of our young guys who may turn out pretty good. Byrnes, Bytel, Bell....

Every time we prise a player from another club we pay them overs. So its not just a matter of...he's good , throw money at him.

People who don't like how we spent a decade out of finals might want to look at the reasons our team disintegrated after 2010, while the Hawthorn and Geelong machines kept steaming along.
All true. Hawthorn and Geelong players stuck together and were willing to play for less $$$ to keep them in contention. They also have the luxury of being able to lure A grade players by selling that dream. Although it’s over now for hawthorn.
We also had shocking list management where our salary cap was f**ked.
Being a minnow club we have to pay overs to attract big names.
With our rise up the ladder this year and our natural progression we should be knocking on the door of top 4 next year. Especially if we can add Taranto. Our age profile suggests we should stay there for a while too. Then we sell it the players that you can have 80% of your market value but play for a top club. Or you can go get 120% of market value but play for a bottom 4. At the end of the day players will put a higher price on a premiership medal than a pay cheque.

To add Taranto tho we are likely to sacrifice a best 22 player. It won’t be popular.

My list of untouchables is:
Steele, Marshall, King, Coffield, Gresham, Wilkie and Clark.
Hill, Butler, Jones and Howard aren’t going anywhere.
Battle, Membrey and Billings the ones with the most currency on our list. Personally don’t want to lose any of them but we have to expect that we will.
Carlisle might net us something decent but wouldn’t count on it. Long or Paton would beef up negotiations.

Pretty sure Hanners deal was heavily front loaded too

We’ll keep a lot of role players on the list on minimum contracts to keep the salary cap issue at bay. Guys like Parker, Hind, McKenzie, Abbott, Austin etc

I have thought that over the years. He would be playing a distributor role more than a hard defensive minder. He's played there in games before and looked good. His kicking and vision are very precise.
