Slightly off topic but can I just say how happy I am with this group of players. It’s so bloody refreshing to have a bunch of guys that aren’t disrespectful ratbags, and it’s so blatantly obvious they are not. No scandals, no one breaking team rules or anything, they always look happy and mention the fans. very likeable team. Go saints.

Bet he’s regretting that decision.

Such a strange choice by him, he was a mad blues fan as a kid and had an offer from them.
I remember reading an interview of his, a few weeks Into his first season at the bombers, were he was saying how different it is at Essendon compared to the giants in terms of the professionalism and how that is taking some getting used to.
I reckon he regretted it then and it has only gotten worse.
that club is in turmoil, a far cry from the Essendon I was scared of as a kid. I feel for their fans ..... a little.

- Paddy Ryder was moving back to Victoria. He had options and offers. When Brad Hill chose us Paddy's manager followed up. Ryder had always wanted to play with his cousin and got the chance.

- Howard was told by Port he could shop himself around if he didn't want to play forward for them. After Ryder interviewed with us he called his Port team mate and said he should ask the question.

So yeah, actually, is was mainly having Hill and Hanners on the list that put us in this position.

Will be a 3 way deal - Saad to Carlton, DMac to Essendon, Pick 7 to us.

We will trade 7 for Heeney.

The reported salary we were paying Hannebery didn’t match his recent output or what we had to give up in a trade, which is why I felt we were looking at what he could bring the club as a whole, not just on the field. Not saying we were throwing money at a banged up player but we had a lot of cap space, no other suitors and nobody on our list at that time worthy of a pay hike.

Not criticising the club at all by the way, everything they have done since Lethlean came in has been a step forward - I trust in what they are doing. Like you said, winning helps. I was all for paying what was needed at the time too as we needed a circuit breaker.

Agree with you on all the points RE the different factors that led to the team being where we are now. If Carlisle and others don’t go down injured last year we maybe don’t see Wilkie at all.

The "minimum" cap payment can be a killer on list management , especially when the core of your team is pretty young.
Getting in a player with only a few years left on big money can be a way of essentially saving the cap space.
We know it won't be long until we get that cap space back. ( Ryder probably the same ).
Pay younger players too much on a long contract and things can go wrong, and you can end up stuck paying the wrong players.

I don't really care about how much a player earns but I've no doubt that bringing in Hanners had been a game changer for the club, no matter the games he's played.

Leadership like that doesn't grow on trees and you can see in training and on the field the leadership he provides to the younger players.

Before Hanners they had Geary and Steven? Seb maybe? providing that leadership to the young players. Not one has been part of a successful culture or successful team. Geary is the only one I would count a real leader.

Satan understood this and addressed it. The last administrator to address it was Grant Thomas and this set up Roo, Dal, Goddard, Monty etc... as leaders which (almost) paid dividends years later and also created a massive vacuum when they left because it wasn't continued under Ross.

In both business and sport, if you want the best leaders to get the best out of your business/team, you often have to overpay. There's a reason why the CEO of BHP earns more than most other CEOs even if the BHP CEO can't do consolidated accounting and doesnt' know how to operate a mining vehicle. You are paying for leadership and responsibility and Hanners has accepted both and had both in spades.

The proof is in the pudding going into the second week of finals. The Hanners recruitment has been worth every penny and more and will set up guys like Clark, Coff, Patton, King, Marshall, Bytel, Byrnes etc for many years after Hanners has departed.

Brilliant aquisition and considering our membership records, increasing sponsorship, finals games and involvement in discussion for further great players, is probably worth double what we are paying him.

If Blues are smart they'll split that pick. Plenty of options to do it.

7 seems excessive to me. You'd want something decent coming back.

Don't get the love for Saad - yep runs fast, bounces the ball a lot but 25% of them are in the first 5 metres, next 25% are when he going sideways and another 25% is when he's run too far and then the forwards are completely out of position.

Carlton would be better off picking up Savage for free and spending Pick 7 on midfielders and a half decent forward to replace McGovern.

But hey if Carlton are prepared to cough up Pick 7 for him, if I was Dodoro I'd take it and run like ...................Saaaaaaaaaaaaadddd!!!

Saad is a mercenary. Who in their right mind leaves Gold Coast, for Essendon to leave for Carlton.
If you’re after success and culture then surely you’re looking anywhere else but clubs that haven’t looked like threatening for the last 15 years?
