Name a worse midfield of the top 10 sides than ours...
Caldwell walks in.
Our midfield is our weakest area and he strengthens that from round 1.
If he walks into our midfield, whose spot would he have taken last Saturday?

I hope he becomes a star in our midfield for the next 10 years but right now, he wouldnt be playing in our best 22.

His numbers would suggest he's not ready for a midfield role just yet. He is only 11 games into his career.

I don't think he's a lay down misere many are hoping for to fix our midfield depth at this point in time.
When you count in the fact games are 20% shorter than last year, his numbers are quite similar to the likes of Cerra, Brayshaw and LDU in their 2nd year.

All have gone into the midfield in their 3rd year and had an impact.

He's not going to change our midfield next year I agree, but I think he gets a game and should improve again from this year.

With Hanners back in the fold & Ross regaining form we suddenly have some decent depth. Ross, Jones, Hanners, Gresh, Steele & Clark. Also Billings & Hill on the wings. Not too bad. Essendon lack the midfield diversity that we have. GWS clearly better. But I think we are underrated.

Hanners is really unlikely to play more than 10 games year IMO. If he can just come in and play the Daniel Wells in finals type role, that would do. Ross is a tagger now, if someone comes in demanding a spot I'm not sure he walks up any more and I rate him. Jones could easily be pushed out due to disposal and consistency and Gresham probably ideally suits a forward with runs on the ball like Grey and De Goey. Steele is elite and easily our best mid and Clark developing nicely but again very limited exposure. We are better than the whole thing looks on paper though. It looks like just a random pile of players but all together they are hard to match up on. Essendon definitely have too many the same.

Sinclair probably the most vulnerable. Hanners won't play much.

It's the growth young guns like Gresh, King, Coff, Clark, Paton, Long have had under Ratts and Co that would be enticing for younger players to pick us. We've shown persistence, patience, and prioritized our players from day 1, and it reflected in the season we had.

What did everybody think of Coffield(18games) and Paton(16games) 1st 2seasons in the AFL under Richo.
Both have doubled their games played in their 3rd year

That's a good point, I thought Coffield was a bust this time last year.

I think that's a bit too simple.
You need to look at age and improvement Vs projected premiership window.

In your scenario I'd think it's Seb that would need fo find a new position, but his ball use precludes that.
The roll Ratts has him playing atm is now working well, but if we get a clearance beast in, then Steele can do the Ross roll better than Ross does and so on.

Since Seb has a good value and is on a good wicket, and we have 2 elite juniors to feed in to the midfield, you can trade him to improve another area of the list like a CHB or small forward.

I'm not bashing Seb here, l just think that's the way it would go.

I agree that Kent should be squeezed out, but l doubt it's by Gresh for positional reasons.

Essentially, if we bolster the top of our midfield with Taranto, and need to bring in Caldwell and Bytel (which we do) then the squeeze is on in both directions.
1. Taranto
2. Steele
3. Hunter
4. Jones
5. Gresh
6. ROSS (trade)
7. Sincs
8. Caldwell
9. Bytel
10. Byrnes
11. DUNNY (trade)
12. Kent (trade/delist/depth)
Billings?

Sinclair probably the most vulnerable. Hanners won't play much.
If Gresh was fit, Sinclair would likely be the one who goes out, but he has been really good recently. Still doesnt get massive numbers but he is so clever with what he does and is very good at spotting up a teammate.

And I would take him without any hesitation over Caldwell for a game tomorrow.

He certainly takes Dean Kent’s spot. As good as Sinclair has been, he’d probably go ahead of him too. Likewise Lonie.
The limitations on Ross & Geary have been well documented throughout the season as well.
The club isn’t offering a 5 year $500k contract to a bloke that will be running around at midday.
We are overrated some of the talent on our list.

Always thought he would be a 200 game player and the only thing that was holding him back was the muppet that was Richo and said that many times

One would be mad to drop Sinclair and keep Kent. Kent has been up the ground of late and Sinclair is way, way better.

I have deliberately watched Caldwell as much as I could this year. He's not done much. Hately hasn't either but he's done some really nice passages of play that looked like he was the better player at this point to me. If you take out their junior form Hates looks closer to best 22.
If you could somehow manage to get off your arse and successfully apply to become the GWS List Manager within the next 2 weeks then I, many, many St Kilda fans, the St Kilda Football Club & Jye Caldwell would greatly appreciate it :D #takeourfuturefourthandrun

If we are to become a true contender then one way might be where we improve the quality our midfield and where our two small forwards are Butler and Gresh (with Gresh rotating through the midfield).

With Gresh playing in the midfield in bursts you then get a midfield that keeps the pressure on our opponent for the whole game.

I'm judging on performances at senior level in 2020 and not on the mysterious 'potential' that is somehow held in higher esteem than actual concrete performances.

Caldwell would not be taking Lonie's small forward spot. He has also not played a game better this year than Sinclair. Kent was obviously our 22nd player picked, but was pretty good against GWS in the previous game. He also plays as a permanent forward so when you say Caldwell would walk into our midfield, he wouldnt be playing much midfield if he was playing Kents role.

Kent is a pretty awful footballer that has played far more games than any of us would have anticipated given his output this year.
The first half of the year was pretty good from him I thought.

He's been pretty average since though. Does some nice things every game but just doesn't do it near enough.

Still a decent trade considering what we gave up for him though.

I think he’d take a fair chunk Billings midfield minutes, who would take a fair chunk of Kent’s forward half minutes.

Kent has great legspeed. Sinclair is no slouch, though not quite as quick.

But Sinclair is way quicker of mind. Kent often takes an eon to play on after a mark, and by the time he does people are covered. Sinclair virtually always moves the ball on quickly and this makes our ball movement quicker.

Most sides have mids rotating through the forward line much more than we seem to.

I think by having a deeper midfield we'd be a better side by having a resting mid in Kents role.
