We need a few gun mids, not more beige.

To me the list quality ladder goes

GWS- stars across the list.
Collingwood- stars across the list, good age profiles
Geelong- stars across the list some high quality youth and top end seniors
WCE- stars across the board but a bit lesser down the bottom
Essendon- stars across the list consistently underperform
Richmond- a few stars and lots of grunt, play system footy
Brisbane- rising list with some coming on, most quality is youth
Dogs- a bit unbalanced but probably the best midfield in the AFL
Port- lots of good kids coming through, some stars all through the list, hard to get a read on
Dees- look good on paper, look terrible on the field
North- some stars some youth, still look a few players off finals
GC- lots of incredible youth, lack top end and experience but rising fast
Saints- not much in the high end and mostly young. A bit even with no real stars
Hawks- Look unbalanced but still have some guns and older quality to teach the youth
Fremantle- Look like they are a bit young but have some high quality in the older end
Carlton- constant teases, they have a potential Brownlow winner but not much else. Lots of GOPs
Sydney- in rebuild with some good kids and some worn older players
Adelaide- Look mentally and physically shot with not much coming up underneath and plenty of older players looking out on their feet
I've been miles behind on this thread all year and this was the first post that came up for me today when opening it (from July 12) and you ranked us as the 13th best list, and even worse than the uber-trainwreck that is North, and 8 spots worse than the sinking ship that is Essendon!!??

Food for thought,

Is Rowan Marshall a better Ruck/Forward then Pure Ruckman?

I would be inclined to start searching for a Paddy replacement for 2022. Possibly a decent backUp tap ruckman for next year that we are confident can play a role. We had very little faith in Abbott this year. Alabakis is a non starter and Bell is a beanpole ruck/forward.

Well from Ratts post game press conference it would seem clear that the Saints are after a mature key forward to take the load off Kings.

So is there anyone apart from Cameron or Brown available?

Or do we target a ruckman and have Marshall more permanently at CHF? I like Marshall around the ground but he does his best work forward of the centre, got a tank, competes and can take a grab. And on the flipside, he is not a great tap ruckman.

Ruckman is easier and cheaper to bring in than an established forward (and I don't think Ben Brown is the type we need although if Cameron was a chance I would say go for it).

Best 22 Round 1 2021:

Paton Howard Wilkie
Coffield Carlisle Long
Hill Steele Jones
Lonie Brown Billings
Butler King Membrey
Marshall Gresham Clark
Hannebery Ryder Ross Sinclair

If Brown was cheap I could see the attraction but I don't think he is the type we need. He is a lead up forward, despite his height he is not a contested mark beast. And he is a bit clumsy. I could see him just getting in Max's way.

I want Seb Ross gone. His basic skills and game awareness cost us time and time again. Ive had a gut full of watching it. I don't care how much effort he puts in. Get rid of him.

100% been saying this for 3 years. If someone had the time to put together a clip of all his possessions last night it’d be a series of panicked clangers

From ratts presser.. now I’m just guessing but I got the impression lonie could move on ... he talked about bringing players in particularly in the midfield and referenced then being able to use guys like billings forward ...

We obviously need more draft picks to make these moves if they think Billings, gresh etc will play forward due to bringing midfielders in lonie could be expendable . Not saying this is my opinion I’d keep him

Also didn’t get the impression ratts thinks all that much of Carlisle he was baited several times to say we really missed him and he was reluctant to pump him up instead diverting to focus on how much we missed Ryder .. thought that was interesting .. even when asked about his contract didn’t comment on him being an important player just said he thinks there’s a contract coming fir him

I’m on the Brown bandwagon.

Reckon he would be serviceable until we get Bing in a couple of years.
IT’S HAPPENING!!!!!’ 😱😱😱😱😱😱

The key forward still confuses me. We desperately need Ryder in. If not Ryder, probably a better centre bounce ruckman than Marshall. Unless Marshall improves in that area.

Once Ryder is in the team, then Marshall goes forward. Unless they’re planning for a 22 with out Ryder.

It begs the question though. Without Ryder... are we better suited with Marshall tucking and an extra key forward (let’s say Brown for hypothetical sake). Or Marshall forward and recruiting a ruck in (I assume we can’t get a good enough quality ruck in moving forward as we could a forward though).

After yet another season of elite football without missing a single game, (just turned 32) Todd Goldstein has now missed less than 5 games in the last 11 years of football.

Not saying he's a good fit for us now, but maybe in 12 months time we'd look at a 33 year old goldy as a replacement for ryder?

I reckon Marshall gets a free pass for his rucking last night. He’d has no continuity as a solo ruck this year and it’s a very difficult position to be thrown into. When he played there last year, he only got beaten once or twice for the whole season. He’s spent most of this year as a forward doing some ruckwork at around the ground stoppages. It’s no surprise then that our centre bounce clearances were a mess whereas our around the ground clearances were pretty good. If Marshall had a full pre season as a ruck and played there consistently, I’m confident he’d be a top five ruckman in the comp.

He’s also a terrific forward/ruck though so I don’t know which way it goes long term. Next year hopefully we can get a lot of footy out of Ryder. If we can get a more normal season in it should help Paddy too. Don’t imagine he loved the four day breaks.

The forwardline is going to be absolutely stacked though. King, Membrey, Marshall, a new recruit (Brown?) and Battle? Certainly can’t fit them all in. Someone has to go back you’d think. Battle the logical one but they haven’t seemed interested in having him in defence. Could Membrey go back and play a Luke Ryan type role?

If we do get Brown, Caldwell etc how do we fit Battle etc in? Feels too tall as it is

Depth:
Battle Caldwell Geary Dunstan Byrnes Bytel Webster Kent Connelly Clavarino
Savage Hind Phillips Roberton Parker
Marsh Bell Joyce Langlands Austin etc
Battle is no depth player imo he is in our best 10 players and would rather him forward than Brown

I know one that has not been mentioned...

Would we take Buddy as a salary dump?

Cameron to Sydney, then they dont need him. Helps King for a couple of years. Great mates with Roughy.

Either way, Ratts press conference has me in no doubt that we already have a key fwd and a mid lined up.
Let Sydney keep Buddy and Saints take Cameron

If he’s still fit and firing it’s a possibility.
The way I see it we either recruit a quality tap ruckman from a state league (doubt we get an AFL listed one) and it’s either them or Ryder playing week to week and Marshall forward.
Or we work with what Marshall has. Not a great tap ruckman but good around the ground. Similar to Nank in 2017 - it worked for the Tigers and is again in Soldo’s absence. And recruit in a mature full forward. I like the second option. Not sure where that puts Ryder though. Maybe we can play them all.

Long term I don't think marshalls lack of tapout ability will hurt us at all.
Our midfield is currently too weak to handle romas lack of tapouts, but once we fix our midfield it will be a non issue.

Just as it is for all other top teams- nankervis isn't a great tap ruckman, but it doesn't matter when you have dusty, prestia, cotchin, edwards etc.

Definitely like the idea of moving Billings forward at the expense of Kent or Lonie who should be depth only if we are to challenge for top 4. Would love to add to the midfield to allow that move to happen.
Like more the idea of moving Billings on.

Jeez, what were you smoking when you wrote this list Gringo?

Again being Devil's advocate they want someone to take the load of King the next couple of years. That means someone who is ready to play Round 1 2021.

I doubt that such a player exists in the local leagues.

Josh Bruce should be in the VFL next year.

I'm not convinced Ben Brown is the answer, just my opinion

Jeremy Cameron is the answer... it’d be worth losing some depth in other areas to free up some cash and replacing them with kids/role players & plonking Jez at CHF.

Robbo alone is on $650k+. JWeb $350-400.

There’s your $1m a year.

Geelong are on the edge of a precipice. Show Jez the $ & the dream.

Get Caldwell in & a mature mid who can do the job immediately.

Re-sign Jake & get some delisted tall defender as back up (Durdin, Pierce from Freo).

Bang. We’re in it up to our necks.
