Dockers prospects Joel Western, Keanu Haddow, Chris Walker impress in Claremont, East Freo WAFL colts wins

A pair of Fremantle Next Generation Academy talents starred for victorious WAFL colts sides Claremont and East Fremantle in semi-finals action on Sunday.

Smooth-moving Tigers midfielder Joel Western was a class above with ball in hand as the reigning premiers booked their spot in the grand final with a hard fought 15-point win over Subiaco at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

The Shai Bolton-like youngster showed why he’s attracting plenty of AFL interest, spotting up teammates with ease in tough conditions.

Western had 24 touches, four tackles, three inside 50s and a goal in a well-rounded display.
Son of a gun Zac Mainwaring bobbed up for a couple of classy final-quarter goals in the low-scoring 8.10 (58) to 6.7 (43) affair, including the sealer at the 16-minute mark.

Draft hopeful Jack Avery, Jacob Blight, Kendyll Blurton and Ben Ramshaw held up well down back for Claremont.
Intercept-marking machine Avery became the first player this season to keep dangerous Subi forward Sandon Page goalless, while also having a huge rebounding impact with 20 possessions and seven marks.
Kalin Lane was the premier big man on the ground, amassing a game-high 39 hit-outs and showcasing his exciting follow-up work with 14 possessions.
Lane helped give his midfield brigade of Western, Logan Young, Jake Willson, Sam Alvarez and Cameron Anderson first use of the footy in a fine display.
Young had the most possessions on the ground with 26 to go with nine tackles, with his outstanding defensive pressure resulting in at least a couple of free-kicks.
Jacob van Rooyen, one of WA’s best 2021 prospects, was a physical presence at centre-half-forward with 2.3 from seven marks, with elite body work and a great set of hands on the lead.
The Lions get a second chance in next Sunday’s preliminary final against giant killers East Fremantle, who upset West Perth for the second time in a month at Joondalup’s Provident Financial Oval.
The Sharks dominated after half-time, booting five goals to one on their way to a 19-point win.
Captain Keanu Haddow was outstanding down back to continue his fine season, while fellow Dockers NGA gun Chris Walker and Bailey Hodge booted two goals apiece.
Speedster Corey Warner (24 touches, six inside 50s and a goal) and midfielders Josh Browne (27 and seven tackles) and Finn Gorringe (24 and 10 marks) were also prominent.

So putting on the Nostradamus hat, where does our pick 11 end up assuming we don’t trade anywhere. Williams will get band 1, Crouch band 2 I think. JUH and Campbell to push it back two more. Possibly Ports and the Pies NGA sneaks in as well.

Best case pick 14, worst case pick 17 (if Crouch gets band 1 as well.

Awesome...

I'm expecting all of JUH, Cameron compo, Williams compo, Core compo, Campbell and maybe another NGA bid to push our first back.

So #17 to #20 range. Which is knocking on our own academy picks
No way Corr is band 1

Williams will be band 1 (so would Cameron if he goes) but Corr surely not. Not even North would give him 600+ x 5 surely?

Also don't fret the academy kids, as always you look at the board as if they are not there. The only real issue is dropping below a bid of our own.

GWS don’t have a pick in the first round. So does any free agency bids come after what would have been their original round 1 pick?
No way does Corr get a Band 1 compo. Even North arent that stupid.

North is going to have a lot of money they have to spend, don't be surprised to see Corr paid a million dollars in a season and progressively less for a long term.

GWS compensation picks will land after where their pick would have been.

Just as if we lose a free agent this season and got band one compensation for him, we would get a pick after where our pick was originally, not the pick #11

Yes everyone will be surprised if that happens.
Also if Cameron leaves they are not going to accept a comp pick for him. They will force a trade.
Worst case our first pick gets pushed back to 15 and could be as high as 12

I still think anything 10 - 20 is a lottery this year. 2020 form would have shuffled the deck and we have no idea how it would have landed. The Vic guy who ends up going ~20 could easily have ended up top 10 with quality form this year and the reverse is also true.

I am sure I remember Nads being talked about in first round calculations after his 17th year.

This will definitely happen. Where would Brayshaw have gone if COVID had happened in 2017; 10? 15? 20? Certainly wouldn't have been 2.

The range of potential outcomes is wider than normal for picks like ours (lets say provisionally 13). Much higher probability than normal of either getting a gun that should have gone top 6. Equally however a higher probability getting a player that, had they played a full season this year, might have slipped from being taken in the teens down to late second or third round or even further.

I think he would still have been a first round fancy but agree that 2 is unlikely. The one that sticks out for me is Oliver. Reckon he doesn't get drafted without his 18th year.

Not necessarily a club opinion but I reckon the BF draft guys had Rayner around 10 going into his draft year. There'd be heaps of that sort of story. Mitch O'Neill was first round contention and ended up as a rookie.
