Western's highlights (from this one game) probably don't do him justice but you do get a taste. He is small but he did spend all pre-season with the Claremont seniors and loves learning off Sonny. As I've said before he's a bit like Shai Bolton but with a longer kick and more experience playing as an inside mid (at the same point in their footy careers).

Bolton has a huge hoof. If he kicks longer than that I'll be very impressed!

You watch the Colts games and Western kicks an extra 10m further than everyone else. Has lightning hands to go with his speed as well. It's a bit crazy because if he was 10cm taller he'd be a top 10 pick imo. Time and time again I see these short players get picked up with late picks and turn into very good AFL players. And conversely you see a bunch of tall guys get picked up with first rounders and end up on the scrap pile because they've only dominated at u18 because of their size. Even if his size restricts him to playing as a small forward he'll be well worth what he'll cost us to match a bid.

I'm super excited to see what Henry (who has the best skills I've ever seen of any WA u18 player) after getting through a full pre-season together with Western can bring to our forward line along with Sturt overcoming his injury, Walters having a better year and Fyfe spending even more time forward. Things could change quickly up forward for us.

This is the thing for me, people are panicking over the possible loss of Hogan but if we have quality small / mid sized forwards we don't need 3 talls. Taberner and Lobb, Fyfe and Mundy rotating through then surrounded by quality smaller types like Sturt, Henry, Western, Frederick. This would give us a better balance and more chance of locking the ball in.

Agree.

Cox can swing forward as well.

So a bit like Collingwoods forward line then?..🤔

Or Richmond's :)
Yes... except none of our remaining kpfs are even in the same stratosphere as reiwoldt (back in2017 anyway) and even Richmond acknowledged it was not viable long term as they brought in lynch the very next year.

Think it’s inevitable cox swings back forward for now (which I don’t mind and I think could still be a long term answer) as our chances of getting a replacement this year are slim .

However we desperately need another HIGHLY RATED kpf developing in the sheds by end next years draft.
I hope we go hard to get in position to draft Van rooyan, providing he continues his upward development .

Will the Victorian kids play exhibition games before the draft (like WA did)?

Unsure. It’s still not confirmed if the Vic Metro kids will have combine testing yet.

Any other players of note on your fancy Worst subscription, Mister?

is there a realistic chance that Tilthorpe is available at our first pick?
We’d need to trade up to around pick 5, maybe 6 at the worst. There’s a clear top 7 emerging among the draft crop.
JUH, Logan, Thilthorpe, DGB, Will Phillips, Hollands, Campbell (at the bottoms end of that 7 probably). JUH and Campbell are academy players so we’d need pick 5 to get one of these guys with a live pick.
After these guys you are looking at the likes of Bruhn, Perkins, O’Driscoll, Cox, and several others. there’s huge difference of opinion from about pick 7 onwards.

It would be way too expensive for us to trade up to those top 6 picks. I personally don't think it is worth it (unless some of the crazy expectations on here for trading Hogan/Blakely are met -> no chance). I think there is really good value to be found with mid to late first rounders given so many unknowns due to Covid. I would rather try and get two 1st round picks before the bids for Walker and Western come than sell the farm both this year and next to try and get a top 6 pick. Still plenty of quality players available in the first and second rounds (irrespective of academy bids etc).

How does Van Rooyen stack up against Logan McDonald?
I have no idea, but if the club rate him then I am fine if they play the longer game and position us for next year's draft. There are nice options at our first pick this year but not for KPFs.

If we walked away with Walker, Western and a project tall this year, and two first rounders in next year's draft, that could be interesting.

Truuuuuueeeeee. Even in a regular year there are a lot of great players in the 10-20 range that get drafted often some of the best players of the draft.

"unknowns" don't usually make for a great drafting strategy.

It's more that without exposed form, there may be some serious bargains.
Bont, Oliver et al didn't elevate themselves into first round discussions until late in their final year of juniors. There is a lot of risk this year, but also high reward if we have any inside mail on the Vic prospects

For sure there will, but that still doesn't make for good drafting. Good drafting comes from good scouting. Our club off field is fairly chaotic at the moment and I have little confidence that we have the best intel on Victorian players.

Isn't our list manager based in Victoria though? had pretty good mail on Young and Serong. knew where we had to get in the draft.

I'm comfortable for us to take some educated guesses late in the piece. Couple of talls, Walker and Western, and some speculative picks.

Walls manages the list and I am sure he has decent contacts. But without football being played in Victoria there is little to report on. For example, one of the possible talls we could look at is Nik Cox, but the information on the development of KPFs changes rapidly. Just take a look at McDonald.

Difficult to make an educated guess without information.
