It's never an overly impressive effort from the Herald Sun on draft coverage, but the Northern Academy kids not being effected by the top 20 bid protection is draft basics 101
No bloody Kai Lohmann, what's wrong with these guys don't they know talent when they see it!!;)

Things that excite the Herald Sun; Bodhi Uwland doing big kicks, Mani Liddy winning contested possession, Blayne O'Loughlin getting outrun by Jye Amiss
Things that are gross to the Hearld Sun; Kai Lohmann doing something flashy, including boundary line snaps

I would look at what we can get at the trade table for Scholl. Can Scholl and pick 4 get us pick one. Even look at trading Chayce Jones. You've gotta look at trading when players have some value but assessing whether you can cover their loss.

Agree, if Dawson comes in and Milera stays fit. Sholl, Hamill and McPherson struggle for a position IMO.

If be the operable word there

Contending teams generally bat pretty deep.

No.

We're a bottom 4 side twice over now, even large portions of our best 22 aren't worth a whole lot in trade, let alone fringe and squad players. They're the sort of players you trade a future 2nd or 3rd for or grab as a DFA for cheap instant squad depth, they're not value adds for trading up to 1.

Of course. However, I can’t see Sholl, Hamill or McPherson hanging around for 3-4 years in the reserves to provide depth.
As the previous poster said it’s about getting the max return. Turning excess into a draft pick, upgrading a pick or bringing in a player that is a need. The club would know the likelihood of landing Dawson so that would obviously determine the decision.

Depends. Someone like Sholl won't struggle, providing that back end was just burnout and not the start of his game falling apart. After all, he's shown he has a talent level that you just force him into a best 22.

Hamill and McPherson definitely could struggle, but injuries will happen, and there is certainly no guarantee that Seedsman/Smith/Sholl/Dawson/Jones/Cook/Milera all remain in good form and healthy. McPherson is probably a tad lucky he's got a lane with Kelly leaving, though that could be quickly snuffed out if we're willing to move Doedee away from a third tall. I don't think we should be particularly against either struggling though.

What are your thoughts on Hinge?
I thought he looked promising from the small sample and I’ve heard people at the club rate him highly. Looking very healthy at half back flank/wing :)

I assume he's praying to about every deity he can think of that Dawson is going to Port.

Looked a good sort in his only game, and I respect the hell out of him for trying to play on that shoulder injury, despite it being a silly thing to do. That said, Hinge is in a very similar situation to Hately where he had the inside running on a best 22 spot, got wiped through injury and the situation has well and truly changed on him. I find it really hard to see him breaking into our outside group if all goes to plan. Smith, Seedsman, Sholl (providing it was just burnout) and Dawson would all select themselves. Jones looked good on a back flank, and is probably a mid-rotation from being truly cemented into that role. Milera is a bit of a wildcard but its hard to see us leaving him out if he's healthy. Though of course, we can be guaranteed it won't go to plan and Hinge will certainly get his chance to shake things up if he remains healthy.

The other option could be that he reinvents himself, but he'd almost have to try to be an inside midfielder, seeing I reckon he'd find himself in just as bad of a situation as a mid sized forward. Or take Kellys spot as a mid-sized defender, and this is certainly appealing on my end. Or if you want to go really crazy, shuffle Doedee to a mid-sized defender and Hinge as a third tall.

Back on topic ....if Port have to use their 1st round pick to get Finlayson .
Finlayson would just about be a salary dump. He’s an ok player, but GWS might need to shed some salary with the Kelly extension kicking in. 3rd rounder my guess. Surely there’s zero chance anyone uses a first to get him.
