I'd probably be more comfortable using the two higher picks this year, giving up the 2022 3rd (if need be), waiting out the next season to see if anyone wants out this time next year (someone probably will) and re-filling that pick slot then. But fair enough, each to their own
Totally agree ....future 2nd round pick + this years #42 .....maybe #37 at a pinch

Just my personal opinion but think the club will want to preserve #23 this year .....and as you say try and get a 2nd back next year

Why do we want to avoid PSD?
I think our first preference would be to get a deal done in the trade period. We don't want to end up being the team that nobody wants to deal with. We walked Hately through to the PSD last year which worked well for us then, but I don't think we would want to be doing that every time someone wants to come to us.

We will be targeting more young guys to come back to us over the next few years and we want to show we can get the deal done. These guys would not want to be risking going into the PSD and potentially ending up somewhere else.

Do you think we would be happy to go down the PSD route to get the deal done? Surely our preference would be to get a deal done during trade period?

I don't think it matters. When you finish towards the bottom you can use the PSD as a threat to your advantage. Dawson is uncontracted - it's up to Sydney whether it goes down that route, not us.

Ultimately it will probably end up being Pick 23 after negotiations - which I'd be fine with - but that shouldn't be our starting point.

And that's what will happen, there will be a deal struck that will likely slightly favour us....though no doubt that won't be suffice for some on here who will still bitch and moan.

If we go to the draft with those two picks, what else are we taking? We have to take three selections

I'd much prefer to give up the 2022 3rd and keep 4/37/42, instead of having to use 59 (or whatever it ends up as)
Also the Bulldogs and Collingwood will probably use multiple picks before 37 to get their players so 37 and 42 should move in a touch

I know the chances that someone takes him before us are very low, but there is still a chance. I just think that the PSD would be our last resort this time around. Of course the option id there if we need to go that way, but Im sure our preference is to avoid it if we can, which is what I said originally.

As long as Sydney think its a viable threat, that is all it needs to be as that alone should see us get the leverage we need to cut a deal that works in our favor but does not screw them blind. Pick 23 is the centre piece and it may then need the Kelly pick or a swap of later picks to close it out. Make no mistake, Dawson in our side next year will be very handy

You said nearly exactly the same with Hately. You repeated it constantly in the trade thread about him.

How'd that work out again? I forget...

I’m thinking 37 is enough for Dawson. They won’t like it but Sydney can take it or leave it. He will get to us via PSD. No one wants to burn a list spot on a player who doesn’t want to be there. We can front load to make sure too. fu** them I say!

I would, even if it was just to flog him off next year... unless there was something better on offer.

Are we expected to take one of Dudley/O'loughlin? I would like to keep one of 37 and 42, but probably don't need bot.h

Listening to Reid the other day he said “we have committed to Borlase and Newchurch as our cat b rookies and so the NGA boys will sit somewhere in our talent list”

I took that as it’s highly unlikely we will pick them

Seems Richmond did come knocking for our pick 4 with a deal that involved their pick 7 but obviously not their pick 15, possibly pick 26 or/and 28?

That makes me think we've honed in on a certain player and we're staying the course with pick 4 unless a deal too good to knock back comes a calling?

Erasmus is who I think it will be. Freo willl have pick 6, hence we want to get in before they do

What are the thoughts of packaging up the late picks for the Dogs first (17 currently) so they’ve got point for Darcy and we’ve got another first? Leave us with 4 and 17 (23 for Dawson)?

Aren't there better options for the Bulldogs?

Also there's still bad blood after the JUH bid

They will hang out for 2 x 1sts but can't do it until Dawson deal is done.

Volbeat confirmed from his usual source that this was horse manure. There was no offer

If they want Erasmus so much can we do Pick 4 for Pick 6 + something nice?

I think we will sit tight, see who is available at 4 on the draft day and make a call then.

If we love who is there at 4, we will keep the pick. Otherwise we will trade back for 7 and 15 and get two midfield prospects we like.

Similar to what we did when we got McAsey. It will depend who is there at 4 and how we rate them compared to who may be there at 7 and 15

Each club sets their main goals at the start of the trade period. I think our three would be in order.

1) Keep pick four
2) Don't touch next year's picks
3) Bring in Dawson

There is a reason why clubs want to trade out of this year into next so I don't know why people think we should add a swap of picks next year as a sweetner as they are still valuable.

I think we might only have one genuine draft pick after pick four and it's such a lottery I think we would accept our second pick could be 43 or there abouts.

So I think 23 and 37 are on the table for the Dawson trade. We might be able to combine the two to move up a few spots to appease Sydney but I think that will get it done and keep within our plan.

With clubs and player managers predicting a dry trade period, the 2021 AFL draft, which will be held across Wednesday November 24 and Thursday November 25, is set to take on extra significance.

But some clubs will be wary of what it all means for the 2022 crop too.

EARLY WHISPERS AROUND TOP SIX PICKS
And it mightn’t be the only father-son gun the Giants bid on, with exciting 204cm key-position prospect Sam Darcy a strong chance to be taken in the top three.

The Giants would then consider an array of top-end prospects – and they could pull the trigger on this year’s biggest bolter.

Strongly linked the Giants to athletic Dandenong Stingrays and Melbourne Next Generation Academy prospect Mac Andrew, whose ability to play across all thirds of the ground at 200cm excites AFL clubs.

The Gold Coast Suns have the next pick and would also strongly consider Andrew if he was still available. But it’s also understood they’re keeping a close eye on 189cm Sandringham Dragons midfielder Finn Callaghan, who possesses great poise and kicking skills. One recruiter told foxfooty.com.au there’s “a bit of Bontempelli” about the way Callaghan moves in and out of stoppages.

The Suns have also been linked to key defender Josh Gibcus – the draft class’ best interceptor at 195cm and a player recruiters can see becoming a genuine second backman at an AFL club. Gibcus would fill a defensive chasm at Gold Coast

Some Recruiters believe selection in next year’s draft won’t be as valuable, considering a significant portion of the 2022 crop – primarily from Victoria – have already endured two Covid-interrupted seasons.

It means you could see clubs that rate and trust the 2021 crop highly could trade out of next year’s draft.
This year’s crop has a ‘hybrid’ flavour to it, with the top of the pool to almost certainly feature more on-ballers, small forwards and rebound defenders. Next year’s draft, though, looms as a more diverse one, with a lot more key-position players set to be available

Trade OUT of next year?

That's an odd thing to suggest. Next year they'll actually be able to see the kids play, instead of guessing.

Do they think their development is somehow permanently stunted because of the covid years?
