If we want a SA mid with breakaway speed from stoppages then it's probably James Willis, my only worry is he looks very physically developed and might not have quite the upside of some others, I don't know what his testing numbers are but he looks to cover the eye test pretty well.

assuming e end up with pick 3 or 4, at this stage which of the mids likely available at our pick do you like best for our list. I posed this question to eDPS and he said with our 1st, Draper or Roberts. What say you?
Josh Goater but doubt we'd take him there with SA boys on offer. I would really like to see some of the WA lads a bit more that said, a lot of good judges really rate Neil Erasmus and a couple of others.

Cheers for that. The name Goater has slipped in to a few of the draft boards and I see he is rated quite highly - what would he offer for us as a point of difference and if you also know a bit about Erasmus, what is his point of difference as I have seen neither of these guys play at all

I heard a whisper today that Nicks likes the look of Callaghan, good size, hard running and good ball user

Really?, with the emphasis Nicks puts on contested ball that surprises me a little, on my limited viewing that's an area of Callaghan's all round game I feel needs more work.

Great. Classy in traffic, has size, has that ‘time and space’ in traffic that the rest of our mids seem to lack

Great prospect. That said, I don’t think we can go wrong with a few guys

This.
Just because a random Bigfooty poster thinks that Roberts is great doesn't mean his rankings are gospel. Twomey is the ONLY resource that has inside information from recruiters from all teams and he had Roberts at #9 in his last ranking, behind Callaghan, Hobbs, Gibcus, Rachele and Sinn. This shows that the recruiters don't rate Roberts as high as everyone on this board.

For me, Roberts is a low ceiling prospect who I would be disappointed if we took with a pick like Pick 3/4. He's slow (proof below), has low agility and low endurance and beating up on 16/17 year old kids in the SANFL U18. Have any of you actually watched SANFL U18 recently? It's a shocking standard this year.

I know we wouldn't be drafting a player based purely off his athletic attributes but for a midfield where we all complain about being one paced with Crouch, Sloane, Keays, Laird, what would be the point of selecting a same same player - a competitive accumulator?

And for those who don't think that Roberts is unathletic, he ran a 3.19s 20m sprint at the testing earlier this year, last year ran a 7:30 2km time trial (didn't run this year) and an 8.70s agility. So I asked someone I know to check the times for Adelaide players in their draft year to put it into perspective:
  • Fischer McAsey - 3.17s 20m, 8.68s agility, 7:16 2km time trial year before draft
  • Jackson Hately - 3.05s 20m, 8.22s agility, 6:24 2km time trial
  • Jordon Butts - 3.10s 20m, 8.34s agility, 6:45 2km time trial
  • Reilly O'Brien - 3.11s 20m, 8.96s agility
  • Riley Thilthorpe - 3.15s 20m, 8.68s agility, 6:51 2km time trial
  • Ronin O'Connor - 2.99s 20m, 8.53s agility, 6:41 2km time trial
  • Matt Crouch - 3.25s 20m, 8.00s agility
  • Andrew McPherson - 3.05s 20m, 8.59s agility
  • Ben Keays - 3.18s 20m, 8.58s agility
  • James Borlase - 3.27s 20m, 8.43s agility, 6:41 2km time trial
  • Josh Worrell - 3.11s 20m, 8.29s agility, 6:54 2km time trial year before draft
  • Lachlan Gollant - 3.15s 20m, 8.48s agility
  • Tom Lynch - 3.03s 20m, 8.52s agility
  • Tom Doedee - 3.02s 20m, 8.19s agility
I don’t think Roberts is quick to the eye personally but he’s a good player alright

Off topic wrong thread but imagine trading out your 1st round pick for sweet FA because you got the no.1 pick as F/S in the next draft just to find out you sucked and finished bottom and could have taken Horne before Daicos.
One of multiple reasons why Ned Guy was given the boot.

Same bicks ! Is there any access to WA trial games or Erasmus games ? Good athletic profile and finds the ball

I’d say and only as a guess he might think we have enough contested ball types and need a bit more class and height

As long as he proves his contested game adequate it might not need to be much better than average

Western Australians from 2019 Draft.
Remember hearing Hamish was in W.A. a bit that year
There was some bargains and these 1st 6 drafted all look like being guns.

If you subscribe to the West Australian you get limited coverage, all I know is Jason McArdle really rates him who seems to be the go to guy for the WA lads

I like the sounds of Callaghan but can’t find any footage.

Sounds like he has a bit of Bontempelli and Pendlebury about him. Exactly the type of player we need in our midfield. Would complement the more burst style players of Schoenberg and Keays
He does sound a prospect - the only negative I've heard is that he doesn't get his o

If you do get access also check out Matthew Johnson - getting big wraps.

Don't we have enough contested players Sloane, Pedlar, Berry, Laird and likely Crouch?

Nicks also puts huge emphasis on ball movement, and good ball use

Agree

We obviously have to win it in the contest but Nicks game also relies on hard running and good ball use

Im told that Nicks has seen Callaghan play live and was impressed

2 of the highly touted WA boys featured here Erasmus and Amiss.

So are you suggesting he'll do a Don Pyke?

Why should we only want SA. History shows the best AFL footballers of the modern era have not been developed in the SA system.

The most recent 3 potentials to change that trend are Luko, Rankine and Rozee. Not enough evidence to show a change in trend. With COVID the vic kids have been underexposed. But no reason they don’t catch up.

Too much hype over Horne and Roberts for mine. Berry is a great example of what the possibilities are. We didn’t miss him like the other clubs did.

Too much hype over Horne ?? You're kidding me arent you ??

So one of the top midfielder prospects of this draft, Finn Callaghan, is a Vic Metro kid from an affluent suburb, family links to Luke Beveridge and is a Bulldogs supporter.

Yay
Won't be at the Bulldogs as they won't have any points left after Darcy.
