Way too early for trade scenarios isn't it? It looks like we might get up to 3 extra picks for Talia, Kelly and Crouch if they go, or alternatively all 3 could conceivably stay. We wont cut many this year. So we only need a small number of picks, so, especially if they go, we will need to trade up or into next year or both wont we? To complicated to do any of these now.

Speaking of the draft, how much do the recruitment managers discuss their plans with each other? Is it completely secret like poker or are they more open with each other.
For example, if we knew that Roberts was safe until say pick 12, and he was the guy for us, we would make use of our pick 4 by trading it somehow?
I don't see any danger in knowing who is chasing certain players.

From my understanding it was very open in years gone by, but in recent years recruiters how pulled right back to almost complete radio silence. Probably the onset of draft day trades put the final nail in the coffin of club to club information sharing.

I'd be very tempted unless our recruiting team see whoever is available at our pick as head and shoulders above the rest yes. This is a real midfielders draft and I won't be the least bit surprised if the best mids in this draft aren't in the first few taken. 2 for the price of one provided they have points of difference to our current list might be the go.
Just remember these rankings won’t end up how the draft goes

each club rates differently for starters and we have a heap of footy to potentially be played and her important stuff being any champs games ( I expect VIC teams / SA and WA to have plenty of games as a min )

so we may take one of these mids rated 10-25 by Cal at moment with our first pick even if it’s pick 2

Secret usually

some clubs will even do a last minute interview on a player they have no intention of taking just to throw other clubs off the scent

Let's say we stay at around pick 4 in the draft.
Horne is off the board, as is Callaghan.

Richmond call and offer the following trade:

Pick 9, 17 & 26, for
Picks 4 & 23

Take picks 23 and 26 out of the equation. I don't think Richmond need a sweetener there. If it's Picks 4 and Picks 9, 17? It's around the mark, but obviously only if we don't have someone in mind for pick 4.

Be interesting if the pies do come last..

GWS being already stacked with midfield talent might be more inclined to trade pick 1.. move down and grab gibcus and also get something else in return..

edit: guess that also depends on Kelly staying though.. they might see Horne as a direct replacement for Kelly..

If they want pick 4, then they can give us 2x picks in the 5-10 range, or forget about it. 9 & 17 is nowhere near enough to land pick #4.

it really depends. Picks numbers on the own are meaningless. Players are more important. Like in 2018 pick 6 was worth more than probably 2 or 3 this year.

If Draper and Roberts are 2 and 3 on our board and we are pretty sure one of them gets to 9 then adding 17 to that is a start the car offer. If we miss both of those at 9 then it’s nowhere near good enough like you say.

And yes I know picks push out further, especially that 17 pick.

Given the crazy positive enthusiasm for tallish mid Elijah Hollands on here last year, why not make it clear to his management that we want him at the Crows and that we will pay what GCS cannot match for his services in 2023 (assuming he goes out of contract at the end of 2022). We really wanted you last year, but we had to take Riley first, we couldn't trade up and you were gone by our second Pedlar pick.

He would have to come much cheaper in $$$ and picks than either Rankine or Lukosius who might be better left for later FA. He should find it much easier to break into our midfield/half forward roles, even in 2023.
Hollands was my pick 1...pick. but obviously Thilthorpe has proven me wrong.

but if highlights are what you go for, I'd take Hollands in a heart beat!

Some bookies have Collingwood as favourite for the wooden spoon. I see the sense in them trading out their 2021 1st last year ahead of a bid on Daicos, but wow will it have backfired spectacularly if they finish bottom. They would be odds on for the wooden spoon if they lose to Hawks this week and we lose to Kangas final game.

Interesting to note that Twomey has Draper & Roberts slipping significantly due to their respective injuries, coming in at rankings of 12 & 15

Isn't that Draper rising in the rankings?

Ehh, I’m pretty sure pick 6 got picks 12 and 18 not long ago, so it’s not a bad hypothetical
By draft time especially if we get some form of the Nationals played and the the recruiters get to see each States best mids pitted up against each other things will become clearer. It will all come down to where Hamish and his scouts think their favoured players will land pick wise, trading down a few spots to bring in another later 1st round pick could very well be an option especially if we're factoring in bringing in some local talent again.

Do you think at this point we’d already be pretty settled on who we are specifically targeting or would it still be up in the air whereby a player they hadn’t paid much attention to becomes a possibility?

Last year was the big chance for South. Jason Rowe killed it through an inspirational effort for WWT in the PF. Unfortunately that probably help get him draft to the Crows.

Glenelg look odds on this year.

Yep fingers crossed. Hand has done very well, wouldn’t be surprised if he gets poached back to the AFL

I think our board would still be pretty fluid personally, no doubt we'd have it down to 5 or 6 at the forefront of our thinking but so much still has to depend on some form of Nationals going ahead. Might come down to our actual finishing spot which will either bring in option/s or take away?

Richmond call and offer the following trade:

Pick 9, 17 & 26, for
Picks 4 & 23

Richmond are super keen on Ben Hobbs, an inside mid who we are probably not going to want (and don't really need).

That would leave us with (using the latest Cal Twomey rankings) with something like:

Erasmus (if got lucky), Ward, Sonsie, Draper or Roberts. Let's say we take Draper.

Then at pick 17 we could possibly grab Goater (currently ranked at 22 incl Academy etc...).

At 26 we have plenty of options (which I don't know enough about to even attempt at a guess)

So, would you accept the deal from Richmond?

It’s a really bad trade. Laughably bad

It means 9 & 17 are worth more than 4

PlayStation hangs up on you

Didn't we trade 4 for 6 and a future 1st? (Ended up pick 9 or something)

That's more in the ballpark.

Also I think we'll have pick 3
That was a suckers deal as GWS needed to get in ahead of a bid on Tom Green so they could get him AND Ash rather than have their 1st rounder eaten up in a bid for Green. All they did was bring their 2020 1st into 2019. Unless there is someone levels better on the board at pick 4, a team is NOT paying 6 and a future 1st unless there is a father son implication.

Look back at what Port paid for pick 6 in terms of picks (I don't care that they traded players etc - just the pick numbers) in a superdraft and that is a better indication

I think the super draft makes a worse indication

Picks are worth more, including the ones coming in

4 for 9 & 17 gets you laughed at in regular draft. 6 for 11,23,37 is better when 23 & 37 are worth more

I’m hanging up the phone and cursing the mother of anyone who offers me 9 & 17 for pick 4
