Maybe Western are a better side than the paps but let's not pretend the difference in quality between the teams is anywhere near 70 points. Whether they choked under the pressure and expectation of the occasion, or it was some other reason altogether, they definitely performed well below their best.

There are elements of choking and not choking.

In a way, yeah, losing against a side that's better than you isn't choking. But Port finished 2nd, and WB 5th. And to lose in the fashion they did? Game was over after 20 minutes.

I don't think anyone will argue that Port is actually a better side than the Bogs. The problem for the Smears is that to argue that it wasn't a choke, they have to admit what us third parties can plainly see in that they weren't the 2nd best team of the year. They have to admit they only made 2nd on the back of the softest minor premier draw in history. They have to admit that they only got there by beating up on bottom teams and not beating a top 4 teams. They have to admit they probably shouldn't have even been in a prelim. That they were masquerading as a top 4 team.

But hey, even if you admit all that, they still got flogged, at home, after a week off, by a team who hasn't been home in 2 months, to the tune of 12 goals, against a team they beat away 4 weeks earlier when the stakes weren't quite as high. Which many would consider a pretty epic choke.

Finals is a completely different game. The Bulldogs take their game to the next level and powaa don't. I would say the gap in finals is 40-50 points. Powaa could hardly beat a top 4 team all year and were a 5 goal better side at Adel oval compared to away. Melb would have flogged them so I think they are lucky they didn't get their pants pulled down like 2007.

Now they can’t do it in the AFL but they’ve been told about their great and glorious history and they try it out now and then eg Dixon and that hit by SPP in the last minute, frustrated sure but that’s cos he’d made no impact the rest of the game

As someone else on here said, Port need to do what Collingwood and possibly Carlton have done: recognize that their past flags were an eon ago, forget about it and deal with the reality of playing in this comp without all the chest beating and faux tough guy pose

I think McRae will have the Pies on that track, let’s see if Port and Carlton can do the same
