Key Off-Season Dates

FAQs & Resources Thread

It has an index at the top with threadmarks so it's easy to find what you're looking for – or easier than scrolling through 250 pages of AFL Rules, Regulations and CBA pdfs anyway.

These sorts of questions are all answered along with a bunch of other resources made by posters from across BigFooty (feel free to add to it!):

Shouldn’t we be looking to trade for mature talent… we can afford to not hit the draft for a year or two.
As General Giant said we need a promising young KPD, but also what mature aged talent would come up to use that'd be worth trading in? We don't have much salary cap space if all reports are to be believed and it's not like we're in the window for a premiership currently unless something clicks

If we draft more young players… we will miss the eight for the next couple of years at least. We won’t retain players if they aren’t playing finals.

Doesn't really address the issue though does it, with where the caps at and the fact we're not an attractive prospect currently, do you think we could get anyone worthwhile nominating us? We need guys that fit our age profile, no point pulling in guys that are 28+

"The Giants have been where I grew up and I learnt everything about footy from them. I wouldn't be the player that I am today without them," Fahey said.

The only way the season can be a step forward is if the club gets the key signatures on contracts from Kelly and Hopper, if this doesnt happen it will be seen as a further weakening of the club and the steps forward made by the likes of Ash, Cumming, Idun, Flynn and others will not be enough to cover the loss of either of those 2

Will salary cap pressure allow for both to be signed? There are plenty of big long-term contracts already.
If Williams got $800k+, what sort of deals might Hopper be considering?

I reckon we keep them both

I wouldn't be shocked if Hopper goes.... the stats he has put up this year are elite and he should probably expect to be paid as such. He is tracking with better numbers than big stars of the game

I just can't make up my mind on where i sit with this list management strategy. On one hand... if established players keep walking out on the club we lack credibility... but on the other hand we just keep paying up the big bucks for players to ensure they do stay. We overpay.

Part of it is that we cannot offer the same commercial opportunities and exposure to players here in sydney. I know that is offest with less noteriety meaning they can live more normal lives. We just haven't got the balance right yet have we? I mean the big money contracts mean that we have to take a punt on who will be the right player... did we make the right calls?

Are we overpaying though?

Early in the piece we paid overs with the immediate 2 year extensions, and guys like Scully and Jezza got massive deals, but that seems to have leveled out.

The good players get good deals, but that is everywhere.

Cogs, Whitfield and Toby all on good money, but could have got more elsewhere. Cogs allegedly left $2.8mil on the table. Jezza went for more than we offered him, Corr and Zac Williams both got god father deals, Caldwell's deal was insane for what he has done so far. We didnt get suckered into overs on any of them. We would have matched for Cameron, but didnt offer him the moon in the first place.

We have too many stoppage specialist mids.
Ward, Hopper, Green, Coniglio, Taranto, DeBoer. I would argue that’s how Stone and Bruhn are tracking as well.
Most teams have about 3.
Part of the problem is not enough are damaging by foot.

Nor cover the ground particularly well

I think that he issue is much simpler than all of that.
The make up of our side is a couple more guns taking up cap, much more young players on the list on the squad (mostly because of above) which is fine normally.
But it means when you have injuries, too many young players, and we've had a horrible run of injuries.

Well I look at other lists and cant find too many players on close to a mil a year... there are one or two but hardly a handful like we have.

Two weeks ago on footy phil he discussed this idea... he admits the giants overpay to keep players in sydney and advocates COLA being reinstated

Our younger players yes, we seem to have a habit of this.

But the issue is a lot of other clubs seem to go after 1 of our players with a big contract, we have to get kinda close and then we have a few on that 800 to 900k range.
So all our big players have signed for less than what was on offer but it’s still a few players on good coin.

I suppose my point is the number of player we have on that coin

We have 4 on the big deals, and Toby and Whitfield are probably at the bottom end of what you'd expect for players of that level.
Cogs and Kelly at the top end but both could have got more elsewhere.

Where would TT sit on that list? what about hopper? What’s his new deal worth?
