Put it this way... without Tex, we lose the Geelong & Gold Coast games by 5 goals, and the Sydney game by 10 goals. Without Tex & Sloane, we lose by 8 & 13 goals. That's how important they have been to our team so far this year.

How good are our kids? I have no idea at all. I think some of them have been really good - Scholl & Butts most notably. The rest of them haven't done more than the odd cameo here and there, showing glimpses of what we can expect to see in the future. The point is that the two wins we've had so far aren't evidence that our kids are actually good, because the kids haven't made significant contributions to those wins.

I hope our kids will be really good, but aside from Sholl & Butts there's little evidence either way for any of them. This means that there's little evidence that they're duds (aside from Frampton), just as there's little evidence that they're future guns.

Would be nice if we had more than one first round pick from the last five drafts in the side. That's where the top tier young players should be coming from.

I guess this is where this little rant goes ... had a chat to a local fella who is a mad Power supporter (I'm in Hobart) and he was spelling out for me why we are stuffed as a club.

His main three points were:
  1. When Tex goes down we have no-one to fill his spot
  2. Sloane is a dog of a person and a worse leader
  3. All of our young players have less talent than their contemporaries from other clubs (ie no-one would swap their 6 best young talents for our 6 best young talents).
He is a genuinely good bloke except when AFL is involved, so I just laughed and said go Eagles and moved on.

I actually strolled over to the Power board today to see what was happening with SPP, but was side-tracked into their "General talk" thread where I basically saw the ideas listed above parroted from many of the fine gentlemen who seem to be part of that community.

The one that really got me most confused was the Sloane stuff. It appears that power supporters genuinely hate Rory, see him as a gutless - useless - diving - free-receiving machine. The polar opposite to my view on our captain. I know there will be those types of words from that channel for whomever is our captain ... but it did strike me as very well entrenched over there. On the upside they do seem genuinely confused by Tex ... and the same old cracks showing up in an early round have done nothing for their belief.

Anyway, my reason for posting was ... to see how these points sit with others on our board. I know some people are against playing Tex with Thilthorpe / Fogarty / Himmelberg waiting in the wings. I know of at least one regular poster who despises Sloane. I keep seeing so much about how bad we drafted on here when compared to EVERYONE else.

For me ... I love seeing Tex fit and in full flight, Thilthorpe and Fogarty and Himmelberg can make their own way without our current best player just stepping aside. I love what Sloane brings to the team. I think our list is looking pretty good from an ongoing development pov, whichever picks they were drafted at.

When you mentioned “gutless, useless, diving free receiving machine” I thought you were referring to Robbie Gray. My bad.

Wouldn't worry about his opinion on Sloane too much as he has apparently never seen him play nor ever met him.
On point one re tex, id be interested to know if he thought that would be a problem last year. Just because tex has turned into Wayne carey recently..... perhaps other players have also improved?
Regarding our young players, no one knows how good they are because until last year they weren't selected to play. The end of last year and start of this one shows that there are definite good players there.... butts schoenberg berry sholl mcadam leading the way.
Just point iut that with all the superstars port have and the lepers in our team we're still level with them this year. If they don't win this year they could implode and have to rebuild with all their older stars racing the end of their careers.... which so far include exactly 0 flags and about 2 or 3 wins in finals matches. Total.

Doing away with the magpie to put their glitzy new Power logo on it. And we're the ones who are a plastic franchise.

And especially given that the new logo is basically just the letters PA - that’s all the two teams have in common. Like we didn’t know they both had the same name/initials.

And underneath is a mini “prison bars” - which isn’t the AFL teams look - in kind of a V-shape...but not the double V of the Power team...

It’s a bit of a mish-mash, and very American college style

Should have got the 12 year old girl to do it

Interesting article about hawthorn losing out in trade with Port with wingard. Look, the way I view it, hawks lost out on all of their big gun trades. Mitchell and O'Meara have to be the least impactfull high possession midfielders in the comp. Wingard while x factor had genuine stars around him to deliver him the ball Hawks don't have that and it really was a trade by name rather than trade by due diligence. In the exact same way as Lever went to Melbourne.

Patton was always an injury prone hail mary and Impey has always been a plodder. Kudos to Port they traded well. Hawks should be crucified for their stupid trading over development. Geelong also appears to be running out of luck in trading in stars from other clubs.

AFLMVP, Brownlow medallist is low impact?

Has Marshall really advanced that much? I see Georgiades becoming a fantastic player. But is Georgiades a better player than McAdam? Keeping in mind their FWD line is getting the rub of the green in Port obliterating teams with their inside 50 count

I'm surprised Marshall isn't a better player than he is right now, but there is some real quality there. I'd trade McAdam in a heartbeat for Georgiades, and so would ever other team.

Yes, absolutely - but that's not the point of the discussion.

The point was a comment by a Port supporter that our kids are no good (my paraphrasing). This was countered by the argument that our kids had won 2 of our first 3 games this season. I was countering that argument by pointing out that it was our senior players who won those games, and that those wins are therefore hardly evidence regarding the quality of our kids.

Based on the AFLCA votes, only Butts & Scholl have made a significant contribution to either of our wins.

****, imagine trying to claim that only the top 3 or 4 players in a team made a significant contribution to a win.

maybe we should all chip in and buy you a TV and a subscription.

Marshall seems to have caught Port Development Disease like Wingard, Wines etc. Flat lining after promising starts.

I thought he was going to be a gun of the comp a couple of years ago.

Whilst we still have our cartoon Baltimore Raven knock off as our logo, we are in no position to have a cracking at Ports!

I would love to see the Crows put a time frame on changing ours. There have been many examples posted here that would be a huge improvement.

yeah, nah, we can. The Port Magpies logo was a great football emblem. As important an icon to South Australian football as the prison bars. That they've erased it and replaced with a Microsoft Word 97 version of a logo, while bleating about the importance of the prison bars, is ridiculous.

They want to wear the black and white jumper for a cash grab. That jumper sells well.

GFG about to go belly up, the timing is interesting.

Nothing to do with history, just merchandise sales.

Honestly don't care if they wear their prison bars.

Already plenty of teams with similar colours.

All clubs make money out of new merchandise sales.

Tend to agree they should be allowed to wear the PB jumper.

History is not the reason they want it though. Cash is.

Which is fine if they were honest about it. Instead trying to position themselves as beacons of history, apposed to our "franchise".

I can see Collingwood's argument based around the infringement of their IP and don't think they should bend the knee to Port over this.

It's the typical mentality of tealsters who have been influenced by Rucci. He's turned their supporters into a bunch self-entitled children who expect everything to handed to Port on a silver platter

The traditional Port supporter base had no interest at all in any of this stuff back in 1997 and just wanted to join the league and win. Those days are long gone and now there's a soft underbelly within their supporter base (the Rucci generation tealsters) that In the absence of success now desperately cling to crap like "1870" and "the prison bars" as though they're measures of success.

Port have a steady recent history of young kids developing really well early, looking like hot sh*t and then fading into mediocrity
And it's not their kids that won them games last year it was Boak, Dixon etc.

What ip?

Alternating dark and white stripes?
The black and white colours?
There is no ip

The afl have shown colour and guernsey clashes mean nothing but a means to merchandise

Not arguing for Port to have black and white exclusively
