And are we expecting to see AFL in the Olympics by then? Awesome as we may be a chance to medal.

This is the non-Crows AFL discussion thread.

Just sayin'

Any mods out there? Anywhere?
China play in the Olympics

China is the future of the AFL

It’s on topic

I think that the centre square is a great rule introduced way back when.

Asides from that instead of letting coaches figure out ways to counter flooding, Pagan's paddock etc. the AFL have relied on rule changes. I honestly believe that the coaches would have figured this out.

You don't see the rule changes to soccer or basketball every year, or cricket (OK T20 aside but that's a different story).

I also don't mind the kick in rule. A player having to kick the ball to himself is pretty ridiculous, so that's one other that gets the tick.

This one is an absolute shocker. The problem with the whole game, which I played, and I love, is the rules. A player is tackled you have absolutely no way of knowing which way it will go. Play on, holding the ball, holding the man, in the back, too high, or ball up.

Perhaps the AFL could introduce a rule where when a player is tackled they bring out a wheel which is spun, just to add extra excitement to the game? It's close to becoming a f'ing circus already.
The so called custodians of our game are destroying our game

Over the last couple of years, I have watched far less games than in the oast when I watched plenty.

Athletics would be QE2 or Metricon Stadium
Opening Ceremony would be Suncorp Stadium

2022 Winter olympics - Beijing National Stadium is the host for the opening and closing ceremonies, nothing else
2026 Winter olypmics - San Siro is the host for the opening ceremony and Verona Arena host of the closing ceremony, nothing else

It’s common for the Opening/Closing Ceremony to take place in a separate stadium for Winter Olympics.

It’s unusual to do in the Summer Olympics, though Rio did this in 2016

IMO the game is certainly less watchable than it was 10 - 15 years ago, still the best game but it is a shell of what it used to be.

The sweet spot was when the players were semi professional - better skills but not full time with the accompanying 10 coaches coming up with defensive, negating snoozefests of a gameplan.

Throw in the ridiculous number of teams at the elite level (diluted talent pool) and the crap level of umpiring - you are left with the current predicament.

I think the AFL are trying to "fix" the wrong thing. Maybe it's always been like this but it's been really noticeable to me lately.

I'd MUCH rather watch a low scoring close game than a one sided high scoring game that is over by half time.

High scoring is great if it's close, but there were plenty of rounds in 2019 (I looked at 2019 for the quarter length) where more than half the games had the winning team win by more than 30 points.

120 to 60 is not an exciting game of football for anybody that doesn't support the winning team and even then, you wouldn't choose it, but everyone remembers the close ones longer than they do the ones where a team comfortably gets a 30 point lead in the second quarter and builds on it for the rest of the game.

Do all of these changes to increase scoring also make it easier the gap between the winner and the loser to blow out?

I've been turning off so many games early because the tension/suspense just isn't there.

I've always used the Adelaide vs Freo game in 2015 where they let Danger and Fyfe run head to head as an example of why the AFL's obsession with high scoring = high quality is wrong. Hardly anyone remembers both teams scored under 70 points, they just remember two greats going at it and Eddie kicking a ripper.

Of course Phil Walsh was one of the rare coaches who felt he had a responsibility to give fans an entertaining product, which is not a sentiment held by most coaches I'd think.

Enthralling game. Freo red hot favourites. We went down narrowly, had more scoring shots but kicked a truck load of behinds. Probably the hardest game I've seen, and in appalling weather. It was injury city waiting to happen.

Spot on with the AFL’s high scoring obsession, the 2010 drawn GF was one of the best games I’ve seen and the scores were 68-68.
AFLX was the prime example of the AFL’s high scoring agenda and it was rubbish, fans want to see a contest and not bruise-free rubbish.

Remove 6 teams and the quality and standard of the game would rise dramatically.

Our country is not big enough to sustain 18 teams in 2021.

Give teams five years and at the end of that, the worst performing teams financially are kaput
