Pretty sure that's what they're doing.

Saw a conversation on social media earlier in the week, where they were saying there are 3 major differences between Melbourne and Sydney:

1. Climate (it's generally a lot colder in Melbourne than Sydney, and the virus circulates more in colder weather)
2. Melbourne is more densely populated than Sydney.
3. Melbourne's transport system is a lot better.

The lockdowns are all designed to limit the movement of potential spreaders, and it's a lot easier to limit everyone at once then just trust a few people who have already tested positive to isolate when there could be a lot more people who are positive but never got tested.

I can understand why regional areas are also locked down too, at least initially. You have Southern Cross Station, where you have regional and metropolitan passengers all in the same vicinity at the same time. Would only take a few people who are infected by Covid to sneeze or cough in public, regional folks catch it, then travel to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo or wherever and infect other folks on the train and people they live with, and then voila - you suddenly potentially have dozens of cases all over the state.

Of course, if the Federal Government got off their butts 12 months ago and properly organised purpose built quarantine facilities and organised and rolled out a decent vaccination program, we most likely wouldn't be in this situation in the first place.
1. Slightly. A couple of degrees at most in the CBD. Fair enough.
Depends where you live too. Some parts of Sydney are colder.
2. Not really.
3. Not really.
If the same amount of people in Sydney had the same amount of Covid tests as in Melbourne I think you would find the numbers would be the same.
Yeah the Federal Government is hopeless and corrupt. Quarantine facilities should have been built.
Vaccines? Was never going happen. Other countries need it far more.

The quarantine selection was strange. Avalon was the cheapest and easiest option, and it’s right next to the airport. But the state gov wanted mickelham. For no obvious reason. Then it turns out that it’s going to be built at avalon. Does this gov automatically want the hardest, most expensive option just for the sake of it?

Mickelham is closer to Tullamarine and that's where the commercial flights are landing

Yes we have an international airport at Avalon, but not all commercial airlines will fly to that location especially if they already have arrangements in place for Tullamarine.

That means if commercial flights aren't going to be landing at Avalon it's going to require transportation of those going into, or repatriation flights by the government where they would likely have more control over the destination

It would still take over 20mins to get to Mickelham though. It's still re-transportation.
The weird thing is the way we're doing it now is actually pretty good. Just have to do it properly.

About 20 minutes to Mickelham

I have no issues with a quarantine facility to Avalon, think it's a smart idea and really don't know why Howard Springs like facilities weren't built in other states like 12 months ago

The biggest hurdle with Avalon will be how it's handled in terms of receiving passengers, and it's likely to receive some resistance from commercial airlines who already have deals/financial arrangements with Tulla and they don't see the benefit of changing those arrangements to fly to Avalon instead

Wouldn't be surprised if there was some government intervention in proceedings where they may have to provide (financial) incentives for planes to arrive at Avalon rather than Tulla. Alternative options could be government arranged flights or planes arriving at Tulla, passengers disembarking planes & getting straight into buses for transportation to Avalon and once at Avalon they deal with all the immigration, customs etc before being shown to their new temporary residence

Yeah around that. Bout 25 mins from my joint and I'm right near the airport.
Yeah all international flights could not go to Avalon. Not the infrastructure for them, or baggage and freight facilities for them.
And I'm not sure if could handle A380's.
The hotel at the airport isn't a bad idea. It just hasn't been done properly.
I was looking up jobs at the airport on Seek and they had ones for the hotel quarantine cleaners and it paid dead set f**k all. Like nothing.
Some company is making a killing off that contract.
There is a big problem right there. That won't be fixed by going to Avalon or the desert or anywhere.

If a C5 Galaxy can land at Avalon, anything can. It’s probably more suited to big aircraft than Tulla.

Lindsay Fox owns Avalon where the facility will be built.Labor Premier feathering a billionaire's nest. Not a good look for Chairman Dan.
Are you missing the part where the state government chose Mickelham as their preferred site? The federal government wanted Avalon, and since they are providing the funding, that is what they got. I'm sure as hell no defender of Chairman Dan, but in this case it wasn't his call.

No just an explanation as to why they would buck against Avalon in response to your thoughts of no obvious reasons.
