Oliver is the one who does that for Melbourne. Petracca is the creme on the top for them... without the Ling lookalike, he'd still be flashy but inconsistent.

He's not any more, he definitely was once but he is high impact like Dusty now days. Not quite the same level but he nails games closed when they need a match winner now. Oliver is more of a ridiculously high production first use mid. I'd love both.

Both are guns, I enjoy watching Oliver play he has some huge quarters of footy when needed

It's still not the Dogs though. We still lack that elite player that turns games in our favour. Clark and Gresham are developing mids but neither are there yet. Gresham has the tools to become elite and so does Clark in a different way. I'm pretty confident Bytel could still be a gun too. Just looks to have stalled and has had probably the worst development of any player hs age. Missed two years injured, hit the hub and couldn't get games of any worth and now played as a medical sub with limited minutes. He's hardly played any footy for nearly four years.

Watching Sam Walsh become close to elite makes me want to get into the draft and find a gun mid, surely we are due to find a star this year.
If we have 3 top 30 picks (1 for Billings, maybe 1 for someone else), then getting 2 top rated mids is not unrealistic.. Just hope we nail it this time..

The only positive with Gresh's injuries is that they are in no way related. Back stress fractures and then a ruptured achilles.

One possibly overuse/ poor technique & one just a freak of nature.

If it was chronic soft tissues or recurring knees/ shoulders etc then you'd be worried. Hopefully Gresh is inspired by Kevin Durant & comes back from the achilles in the same sort of nick.
The only thing we learnt from gresham’s injury is he should not be played in the guts full time, playing against big bodies/bang and crash types is not good for his long gevity, he should play forward and have stints in the midfield only.

Those flick outs to space are so frustrating to watch because he makes it look easy and you wonder why we can't do that. He was one of my players I wanted. I said on here before he was drafted that he'd win a Brownlow one day so I'm hoping he does so I can brag post. Yeah I know, I'm pretty mature. He's one of those opposition players I hate love. That's my highest level of respect.

Surely we have to have some luck one day. I love the draft but these days it gives me anxiety. It's like a roller coaster, I still remember the days when it was all the hope we had. Now it's more like the purge. You'll lose your favourites for a handful of beans and hope that our crew at least get a goose out of it this time.

Actually, if you look at last year, apart from Marshall, most of our best players all came from other clubs, Steele, Ryder, Howard, Butler, Jones, Membrey, Carlisle. What does that say about our development/drafting?

The indictment for me was that AA list. No other club has had such a terrible run with AAs drafted into the club. Literally since the early 2000s, it shows where our priorities lie.

Can anyone tell me hypothetically if we let Ross and Billings go under FA and both he generate 2nd round picks does the sum of all parts make one 1st round pick?
Opposite effect as if you lose a free agent and sign a free agent the compensation pick is diluted.
not suggesting one 1st round pick is acceptable for 2 best 22 players, just curious

I think you might be right about not having the best body to be in the midfield...
I'm not a medical expert, but people have said that his back stress fracture was due to overload, he wasn't rested during the high run of games we had last year... and then this year that his achilles was caused in part by lack of conditioning.
Forward line for me.

Wtf?

a freak torn Achilles has nothing to do with banging and crashing

his body type is fine - not much different to guys like Gary Ablett junior and Sam Mitchell who played a plethora of games in the guts

One pick for each player lost in FA

I haven't watched GWS this year, but if we could get Josh Kelly for roughly around what Billings is on now ($750k per year) would it be worth doing? Clearly not worth the $1 million he's contracted for at GWS, but if he wants out and is willing to take a pay cut, he could be a good addition.

Not so much his "type" but maybe his conditioning. He can't be fine because he keeps breaking down. Unless he comes back ripped like Ablett and Mitchell in their prime then I wouldn't be surprised if he breaks down again in the middle. But what would I know?

Yes, but we won't unfortunately.

He can just trigger his 900k contract at the Giants.

If he leaves he's gonna want that money.

If JBs on $750k then Kelly is easily worth a $1,000k.
I watched him play last weekend and he’s a jet. 39 touches, 6 tackles and 2 goals. Averages 25, 4.7 and a goal per game for the year. Would perfectly compliment Steele and Crouch
but has been injury prone the last few years so $1,000k per year comes with risk

Kelly has been very good of late and would be a huge upgrade on Billings

How did you work that out ?

Have kind of wondered what the fuss was about with Kelly from time to time. I think i was just missing the point. Ive watched him lately, he's a gun. Would love him at the club.

He's always showed huge potential but he's actually gone to what we thought he might become. It's just a shame Billings didn't do the same with us.

His season a few years ago, 2017 I think? Was much better than this one has been. He’s been good this year, but up until the last 3 rounds where he’s fired like like his 2017 form, he’s been a bit inconsistent

he’s going to be wayyy too expensive $$wise for us anyway unfortunately.

Actually Gresham was a back pocket most of his junior career (only moved into midfield/forward in his last TAC season), after he debuted for us, he played mostly forward apart from last season. So, unlike Ablett and Mitchell, his body is not used to rigours/crash and bang in the midfield, hence the injuries now..

Yeah, I don't think he is someone we could afford and his injury history is probably out of the question after Hanners. I don't remember him ever being as good as this year but perhaps it's just been too long. I remember great games but not consistent output.

He doesn't keep breaking down though.

He's had two totally unrelated injuries that have been long-term ones.
