This place has lost of absolute plot.

Multiple players have could back completely fine from bad leg breaks and Achilles in recent years. Jarryd Roughead, Tom Mitchell and Zac Williams among them. This notion they won't come back as good of a player is outdated.

And then this hunt for a 2nd round pick. Going to go out on a limb and suggest we aren't planing on moving on Billings, Membrey, Gresham, Coffield, Ross and Battle just to get some 2nd round action.
Not wrong , talk about a pack of panic merchants , you have no evidence to say Gresh and Paton will not come back and be as good as they were , I know its a forum but seriously yeah lets trade all our good players to get some draft picks

To me a big part of our issue is our constant churn, look at the Dogs and they have half a dozen guys who have played serious AFL games but get pushed out to VFL to fit kids. Mitch Wallis was close to AA last year... this year he's playing VFL as depth. Guys like Lipinski, Jong, Schhache etc would all be in our best side this year and they have top kids that were drafted very selectively to meet needs. They target traded in Bruce and Keath for very little and both are playing close to A grade footy. Keath is rated higher than Dougal in player ratings and Bruce is second in the Coleman despite everyone here glad to see him gone.

If we were to do something similar we would have held guys like Bruce even Newnes and pushed them to the VFL as kids developed and made them step aside. The Dogs were the only club interested in Bruce, if we'd held him to a contract they would have lost interest, worst case he had a big year and another club paid up big for him. Instead we probably got someone like Parker or Hind with the pick and moved them on after developing them for a couple of seasons and taking games off kids.

Hickey another, losing him really served no purpose, worst case he's a back up in reserve instead of Hunter. Every time you move a player on and have to replace him you end up having to invest picks, energy, time and money into finding another player. You have to settle on a plan and build two solid lists with a lot of potential developing in your seconds side. We are nowhere near the Dogs, Lions or Melbourne (who are the best up and coming lists right now) or even Port who are a good spread of experience and youth but we should be aiming to model off those clubs.

Those clubs are creating sustained success worthy sides. We are not even worthy of the conversation yet, We are Hawthorn and Carlton style but perhaps with a few better pieces in different spots. Sides like Sydney and Adelaide have a better youth side and if they develop right we will fall behind them over the next couple of years. We really need some seriously good management assistance. A Neil Balme type to slap them all into line and make them focus. Our onfield team is pretty much modelling the administration at the moment.
Couldn’t agree more and I was very strongly against trading bruce and thought our treatment of newnes was a disgrace.

We‘re like my dog all bark no bite, a reactionary club with no substance and no clear plan. We talk about the process etc but can’t really deliver we just don’t have the stomach for it. I’m horrified by our recruiting and can’t believe how little we invest in the department, lethlean coming in over the top to make the call on king, his deal for Hannebery etc. Our development is demonstrably lacking and on and on it goes then we wonder why we’re rubbish 🤔.

The one decision I wasn’t that sorry to see was moving on hickey, he had no heart when he played for us and he’s had a long journey to some redemption. I think if he stayed with us he’d probably be playing sanfl or local footy by now.

The bulldogs have certainly had some luck, father sons provided a huge boost and then they found the golden ticket that we passed on. You do have to give them some credit though for generally recruiting well and making the most of the breaks they’ve been given. With a better list than ours they still managed to hold onto Dunkley and find space to make a deal for trealor having landed bruce and Keith the previous year. We’d be doing cartwheels if we pulled that off and still had cap space.
Anyway it’s our recruiting that does my head in, so many times we draft flawed players and seem surprised when those flaws limit them at AFL level. I’m not sure we even have an understanding of what elite in a sporting context is. The best part are the draft profiles where some goober has gone the full baroness von blixen when she’s telling a fireside tale. Players that are bog average develop grace, agility and an ability to play midfield having surprisingly spent 5 minutes there at tac level.

If you‘re not a standout at the championships let alone tac level, are two slow, can’t kick, have no tank amongst other things then you sure as hell can’t be considered elite on any measure that I’m familiar with. Yes some players with the required skills mature late, recover from injury or life events and yes even just new found maturity can change things but no skill set no chance. Stop huddling together with all the other recruiting staff and working on a collective top 50, do some bloody footwork and watch games. Chat to coaches and the crowd not your mates, do your job then see how the testing compares at the combine.

Have a set of must have attributes based on all the information then make your pick.

Why would we want a player like that, massive call by lethlean we better hope Ming is all they say he is and more.

Losing Battle for a second would be a backwards step.
I don’t see it like that simply because we refuse to play him in a position where he can shine.

He‘s not getting a run in the forward line with Ming, membrey and Marshall. He’s not a key defender and won’t get a run as the third tall. So he’s relegated to being played out of position on the wing or a bit of time here there and everywhere, how’s that working out for battle and us.

So well that he’ll probably be dropped this week, so yeah if and it’s a big if I thought I could get a pick that would get me a potential need then I’d trade him. He won’t stick around to be a top up player imo, he appears a confident kid who’ll force a trade if he wants out.

I would play him at full forward but that’s not going to happen and I just struggle to see where he fits moving forward. If we really are obsessed with bing then that just makes it even worse for battle.

But didn't we want key forward depth?

Isn't that why we reached for a project tall with our first draft pick last year?

Trading Battle would leave that selection looking even more strange than it already does.

Reported on here that he made the call on Ming over Libba who wanted smith or rozee.

Maybe it’s rubbish like a lot of things on here in which case the recruiting team better hope Ming is all that and more.
I’ve heard it stated here that Libba was going to pick Rozee, but was overruled by Lethlean, but that’s total hearsay, and Smith isn’t Rozee, so you stating that it was a “massive call” by Lethlean, to pick King over Smith, based on total hearsay- that from what I’ve read didn’t even involve Smith- looks like typical Chinese whispers and complete fake news sort of stuff.

The sort of stuff that Gringo swallows whole and then uses to go on his 12,000th rant based on often speculation at best.

The Ming selection looks very good right now.

I posted the stats of players like Lynch, Daniher, Hawkins and Mckay the other day and he's ahead of most of them.

Mids will always come on quicker than a 200cm key forward but as it stands right now I'd probably only take Walsh ahead of him in that draft.

Wouldn't be the first time one bloke had too much of a say , i had some info given to me by someone who knows Richo quiet well , it goes along the lines of everyone at the club wanted the Truck but Richo wanted Paddy and finally got his way , the person this info came from is a person i would trust 100% and it shows how weak as p1ss our club is for folding and letting Richo decide who we take with the valuble No 1 pick .
As it turns out Richo ended up with the Truck after all

Nether the less to pass on smith and rozee for Ming was a massive call, obviously we‘re all hoping it works out.

I would have thought after mccartin over Petracca we might have thought twice before going tall but clearly not.

Let’s double down and use two x 1st rounders on another one... you know it makes sense.

Emma Quale was with the recruiters while they were making those decisions and wrote extensively about it.

It was obvious Trout loved Paddy for a few different reasons.

As I said, King is tracking very well for his position.

Rozee us a chance to be dropped this week.

Richo was playing the long game

Yep. My post was in response to those intimating we'd have multiple second rounders.

I don’t doubt it at all, over the years I’ve had some rock solid information from friends who have been everything from board members to rep coaches, head recruiter and players.

Times change people move on and I’ve never once asked but what’s been offered over the years would surprise many and makes me think there’s more to some rumours than just idle gossip.

These days I don’t hear much and it isn’t first hand so I treat it all as just another rumour.

I know out:lonie is probably the most commonly used phrase on here but I’d imagine he would get another year, even just as depth considering the amount of likely delisting/retirements on the cards.

Hunter, McKernan, Wood, Roberton, Geary, Frawley, Carlisle, Dunstan, Kent, Clavarino, Ryder.

How many of those 11 will be on the list next year?

You would hope only Ryder.

10 players is a lot to replace with the draft hand we have. Especially when we already have open list spots.

Well it was strange and we don’t seem to have a plan.

My biggest worry with battle is he’s 22 and won’t hang around so we can use two more firsts on bing. Clearly he’s no wingman so how long will the kid put up with this.

I don't know enough about Clavarino to make a call. Some say he's tracking OK, while others say he'll never be AFL level. We also had VFL watchers who said Marshall would never be AFL level so i take it all with a grain of salt. ( If you say that none of them will be AFL level, you'll be right 80% of the time ).
