You’ve been drinking the Essendon Kool aid. They do this - they talk themselves up every summer and maybe it seeps in?

Nah just watch footy. You would not want much of their list but he’s fighting with Steele as our best player if we get him. Close to elite.

Heard two people on the radio say it was rubbish - when you bought a new membership you were given a free one for someone else.
Knowing, Carltons history of being less than upfront, to put it politely, I wouldn’t put it past them to be counting these additional “free” members in their tally.

Of course they are tallying up the free memberships. and so would everyclub.

To me Cripps is overrated and because he’s big and inside gets noticed. He has terrible disposal and just isn’t that amazing compared to how he looked early in Gigi’s career. Merrett is a better player but much more outside.
We should be going after Josh Dunkley exactly what we need and is gettable

I agree but would you pay the asking price of 2 firsts? (Maybe with a 2nd back).

He's contracted until the end of next year
If at the end of the year he is what the club thinks is the missing piece we need then yes

Dunkley is a pretty solid no from me, at the prohibitive asking price.

Especially since we already have an extremely similar type in Steele, and just got a new inside ball pig in Crouch, have Gresham who can win clearances at will, Clark coming through, and have Bytel coming through as well, who was a clearance and contested ball winning machine in the juniors, and looks like he might be able to do it at senior level as well. As long as his back is OK.

When compiling our 26-year-old and under side, for the thread on each teams 26 and under side on the main board, what really stood out was how stocked we were on the inside, but how we were nowhere near as well stocked on the outside, so for mine, guys like Merrett and Kelly are a FAR greater priority than the Dunkley or Taranto types.

Especially since they can both play both inside and outside so well.

We also badly need more guys with precision kicking. Not so much more hack kicks like Dunkley.

That makes sense. If Steele went down I guess Gresham just plays predominantly inside and if both go down Dunstan is still there in the background as well. It will be interesting to see Crouch's impact. It's easy to forget that Adelaide were the best team in the comp in that 2017 era and a big part of that was their dominant on ball brigade and the Crouches were right up the top of that. They were minor premiers a couple of years in a row from memory.

I'm a bargain bin guy too, a free agent appeals a lot seeing as we haven't been taking a lot of kids in the draft, we probably want some kids coming through still. Kelly or Merrett means we get another 7 or so years of a spreading outside mid of top quality.

Kelly has his guaranteed million a year x 7(?) from the giants if he wants it.

You would think we (or anyone else that wants him) would need to stump up very similar money to get him to move.

Before his injuries it would have been a no brainer- but 7mill over 7 years to a guy who has struggled for 2 years with injuries is a pretty huge risk.

As good as he is (when fit), I dunno if the juice would be worth the squeeze.

(Unless he comes out and wins a brownlow this year)

Yeah it's a no to Kelly for me. Just too much coin. We'd likely lose two of our young guns going forward.

Um, St Kilda did this last season.
If you paid for 1 member, a second new member was free.
It was a limited time radio promo.
And yes, it added to the numbers. In our record breaking year.

Yeah the '18 one will be irrelevant by '22 though.

We would have traded away '19, '21 and '22. That's 3 out of 4 years so the only way we'd be able to do that is by trading one back in.

Or just get the AFL to approve it regardless.

(That is legit how it works. You can break the rule if the AFL says it's ok.
All we'd need to show is that we aren't selling the future for magic beans and we'd be allowed to do it, just as the cats were allowed to.)

Thats the other option. It would make sense if we were bringing in someone young.

We did bring in a 21 year old former first round pick this off season as well.

The reasoning behind the rule is so that clubs don't hamstring themselves long term.
Our group being as young as it is should make it fairly justifiable to get an exemption for a 21yo.

Though there is the angle that the AFL will simply try and scuttle every attempt to poach Bing away.

If Ben King wants to come home to play with St Kilda, then he’ll get to St Kilda. He has the most powerful player agent in the game and there are irresistible lures that are difficult to argue against.

In addition, Gold Coast are no longer a basket case. If anything, they are becoming a club with enormous appeal for young lads. It has mystified me why this hasn’t always been the case, but they seem to have got their act together and look to have a bright future.

The AFL won’t stand in Ben’s way if he wants to come home now. Things were desperate for the Suns at the end of 2019 when he re-signed, hence the desperate approval of ambassadorial payments and other concessions. But since then things have stabilised and improved. Ben’s decision to stay was pivotal in making that happen. If he decided to leave now it wouldn’t have the domino effect of an exodus that it would’ve had at the end of 2019.

I don’t know what Bing wants to do. Maybe he isn’t sure yet, even though he is probably enjoying life up there at the moment. We’ll be pitching hard to lure him home, and fair enough too. Gold Coast will be keen to keep him and would demand a high price, which is also fair enough. But my gut feel is that it is going to get harder for the Suns to re-sign Ben after each contract. Not impossible, but increasingly challenging.
