Not to mention at least we wont be paying JB original a mill a year till he's 34 too!

Giants have screwed the pooch bigtime.

The only way we'd potentially still be interested in jelly is if it were a treloar type situation where the giants were prepared to kick in 2-300k x8 for him to play for us.
I haven’t really paid too much attention but my understanding was he has a get out clause that allows him to walk, the million a year is only in play if he takes up the option to stay.

I’d have josh Kelly without any hesitation just not at a million a year, he’s exactly what we need.

The question is can we convince him to join the saints on good but not spupid coin and what would we need to give up. I wouldn’t go anywhere near north, he could play the rest of his career and never see another final.
Would he go anywhere on a huge pay cut when he can just choose to trigger his contract at the Giants?

yeah but jelly can hold it over them if he was so inclined.
As in, he could effectively say trade me to the saints (or any other club) and pay 2-300k a year or else im staying on 1mill x 8.

The key part of the equation is that the giants have no real power.

They are faced with either:
a. keeping a bloke for 8 years on a mill a year.. who is seemingly not worth anything close to that kind of money anymore.
b. Agreeing to let him go as an RFA.
c. Pulling a rabbit out of their hat and convincing jelly to renegotiate (ie him agreeing to give up millions in guaranteed $ over 8 years).

Option B is presumably the avenue they would want to take when those first two are the only realistic paths... although I'm sure they are working hard on option c and trying to convince jelly to be a 'good bloke' and renegotiate his 1mill x 8 year deal.

Assuming jelly isn't gonna walk away from the money agreed to with the giants though; the giants' only real option to salvage something from the mess is to move him on as an RFA.
In order for that to happen, you would expect that jelly wouldn't be interested in doing that unless he's gonna be getting similar money to his giants $$.

The giants taking a 20-30% chunk of his wage long term would probably be the main way they could actually get him moved on as an RFA.
Anything short of doing that and they would probably just be forced to keep their 8 million dollar man.

Haven’t heard or seen anything
I’m hoping we’re into another interstate young player
This is it in a nutshell.
GWS got big problems with their business model.
Serious cash issues.
Consequently, Jelly is under mounting pressure to renegotiate his contract on more favourable terms for GWS.
Plus GWS is a toxic workplace at the moment.
Apparently there is an internal belief that they’ve missed their premiership window and need to reset.
Jelly not happy and returning to Melbourne at the end of the season.
(He has a get out option he can exercise at the end of the year.)
No idea to whom.
Probably best offer.

This is one of those rumours that have a whiff of truth to them.
The Age have run with two articles about Jelly, and also GWS finances, over the last two days. Plus I know from a mate that Covid is impacting all the clubs business models longer and more significantly than anticipated, some more than others.

On the other hand, so suspicious I hear this on 1 April.

That’s right. If Kelly stays at GWS his contract extension is triggered at $1m a year, but he can walk at the end of this year. Nobody will go close to matching that, and nor should they. Nice player, but I’ve always thought he was overrated, and in recent times he’s had injury concerns.

Kelly would be mad to leave the Giants. His financial future is secure. I have no sympathy for GWS, they willingly agreed to the terms of his contract when he re-signed. They will need to carry his contract for another 8 years. Tough luck. They need to live with that decision.

St Kilda’s focus should be on bigger players who can fill key positions. A player like Ben King if he was available, or another disgruntled player similar to Dougal Howard in 2019. Much better value for us going forward.

GWS seem to have been on the stink for a while now, been lots of talk that the coach has lost the players. I would have Kelly but for no more than $650 a year think he will improve once he is out of there

He might or he might just be that tier down and kind of coast along like Billings.

Everything we've got from the Tiges so far has been pretty good why not have a go at Chol I think he's listed as a Fwd/Ruck...he certainly can Jump! AT 2M
Chol definitely has an attacking bent to him, and looks pretty agile for a big man with a good set of hands and a sping heel. I'm not completely sold on him but if we could get him to work down back with a license to fly for the ball it could be really effective. And if that doesn't pan out he would make a pretty solid second ruck to The Prospect once Ryder retires.

I think we must get into the draft, we have gone heavy at trading lately, we all know how that went after the Lyon era.
I don't think it matters too much as long as we are bringing in young players.

I'm not too fussed about giving away a first for a 20 year old key defender for example because we will likely take an 18 year old one at the draft.

**** trades. We’ve burnt the last twelve we’ve done.

Would the club be brave enough to trade out Hill? Clearly it is not working out

No chance.

They will all keep deluding themselves into trying to make it work. It's like when someone buys a nice looking car that is mechanically stuffed and they just keep convincing themselves to throw more money at it.

Brad Hill is a sunk cost.
