Someone with links to the club is pushing the Billings narrative the moment it started to look like letting him go would give us the best potential benefit.

Very common practice in American sports is for clubs to get the beat writers to drop articles pushing narratives. That’s what this is. Just outlining the state of play and how it might benefit the club and get a few supporters on board with what will be an unpopular opinion. A week ago I was smashed on here for proposing this.

A fair few posters are now coming around to the idea. This is how it’s done mass scale.
Morris doesn't have links to the club anymore. Sam McClure is the media person we push narratives through these days, not Morris.

If there is any link to him starting to push this, it's when someone posted a "North is interested in Billings" rumour on Saintsational. And would you believe it, 3 days later when Morris seems to have the exact same scoop using nothing but vague words what could happen.

Correct me if I’m wrong. But he does a lot of our media events doesn’t he?

Secondly I heard the Billings talk out of north 6 weeks ago. I laughed and thought nothing of it. We just rolled the eagles and couldn’t have imagined why we would entertain that.

It’s a lot more plausible now.

I suggested playing the kids with our run home looking the way it does - means we won’t win many more games.

Not sure what Hill has to do with Billings. But I’m trying to improve us going forward.

Winning a flag/contending will be in Kings prime. I’ll take the hit this season to get him surrounded with quality for 10 year.
Well Hill forms a big part of our drafting and trading strategy.

We went all in, both picks and salary cap because we supposedly needed a gun wingmen to complete the puzzle.

Billings is 2 years younger, playing far better football than Brad and would cost less in cap space to keep.

So if we bring Hill in and then move Billings on with a net loss of 2 years, 3 DP's and a player, then you have to assume the club is an absolute rudderless ship and I would have no faith in their ability to replace Billings with a better player.

Surely there is a strategy document somewhere at the club?

Unless Hill wants to leave. It isn’t happening. So it doesn’t help us move forward.

Billings has been here since he got drafted. But he isn’t moving the needle for us. He is also the only bloke available to get us further draft currency.

Morris? Not since he worked for us back in 2014.

It was Sam Edmund did a few things for us last year. McClure breaks a lot of our contract/trade news and has since Lethlean took over.

You do realise there is a link directly to Morris from 2014 right?

Finnis.

Well whoever was involved in Hanners/Hill coming and then potentially Billings leaving should hand in their badge and stop making critical decisions for the club.

They've f-ed us, royally.

Probably different people. It's a sunk cost anyway - Hanners and Hill are here, you got to play the cards in front of you.

Well we know Lethlean was instrumental in the Hanners trade and was head of football ops when we went for Hill.

Just another charlatan by the looks. Time to give him the arse.

We're just pissing into the wind if we keep changing tact.

Would love to see the actual plan and someone take responsibility for the enormous gambles that have come to nothing.

If nuffie supporters could see this train wreck coming, then I'm not sure how the highly paid professionals entrusted with the reigns could be so incompetent.

It might a sunk cost, but if we don't learn from it and/or replace the people calling those shots then we'll keep on critical list management decisions.

Having to piss off good players to try and recoup draft picks lost in horrendous trading mistakes makes my eyes roll around in the back of my head.

Not sure if I can be f’ed watching us bottom out again, 1 finals appearance in ten years and we're tanking and retooling for 2024+?

What an utter waste of time following this club is.
Im blaming injuries heavily for this "setback" this year. I think we have the cattle, I believe the club thinks we have the cattle and the only reason we recruited those top up players was for depth and a little boost. Unfortunately, we've been smashed with the injury hammer and some appaling Saints luck (seriously Paton...) this year is over, play the kids, get some shared games experience and get everyone off for surgery/healthy and aggressively attack the draft for gun mids.
At least the Storm are going well...

This is how I feel…

Let’s just recruit players who have a good run of little to no injuries.

We’ve been really hurt by guys who are on decent to good money not playing. Between Hanners, Jones, Gresh and Roberton that’s probably what, close to $2M we’re missing out on the park this year.

The Billings talk is interesting. If we were to trade him and get a compensation pick, I’d sure hope it is to flip it for a player in the 21-24 age group who can come in for an immediate impact.

Let’s also draft as close to a “ready made” footballer as we can, aside from a few, it feels like we draft a lot of ‘project players’ and hope they develop. We need some footy heads coming in like Byrnes and Bytel who have shown so much already given they’ve both basically missed a year through injury (Bytel) or COVID (Byrnes).

This guy had a good run, played more than 22 games a year for 6 out of 7 years - also won a flag, was AA a couple of times. Maybe we should get him?

Sign him up, how does 3 million dollars for 4 years sound?

Trigger a fifth all things going well.

Billings reminds me so of Shaun Higgins. He stalled at the Dogs, never looked like reaching his potential and then moved to the Roos where he became one of the games elite, albeit in a small market.
I don't think Jack will reach his potential here. I never have. He got Richo'd, he lost his match winning ways, and when Ratten came in he was just a vanilla footballer with a nice left foot who is clean with ball in hand. Unfortunately he hasn't become the game break he looked like being.
Time to go our separate ways

I think he's a Clarko footballer, should go to the Hawks imo.

I'm pretty sure you are on the money but just because you **** something up you shouldn't give up trying to improve. Hill was an absolute **** up, Billings going won't make much difference to us. We are going to have to get into the draft to find our guns now and Billings might get us one. I still hope we find a decent draft expert. If Libba does more of his Trout work we might as well fold.

He's off to the Cats, I know he's ruined our list but at least we might get to see them fail for a decade or two now.
