So you're saying list managers shouldn't be expected to spot talent and potential in players ?

No time machine actually said last year we shouldn't let him go, just play him in the right position
I don't think letting a 27 year old depth player go to club which offered him a longer deal is such a drastic the end of the world, especially when we had a backline filled of 20-22 year olds last year who were performing every week as a unit.

I'd said before that I believe our mistake was delisting Savage, not letting Hind take the better deal elsewhere.

Have you watched Hind play this year?

Depth player?

He was a depth player to us because we were too blind to recognise his talent when played in the correct position.

He's killing it this year... wish it was for us.

Unfortunately everyone doesnt have your time machine to give someone a contract based off their form 12 months later.

It is almost as if it was a great list management move by Essendon to get someone who was was far down the pecking order at another club.

We did the expect same thing identifying players who for some reason weren't best 22 at their original clubs and have been able to find them a consistent spot in our best 22 - Steele having to play a lot of forward at GWS because they had other midfielders they rated as better than him, Membrey who just couldn't get a game at Sydney, Howard who Port were adamant was only going to play forward despite him being a defender, Butler pushed out of Richmond then comes to us having a AA year, Jones having to play half back/wing at Sydney then coming to us and playing his best football on the inside.

We'e benefited from that list management move more than we have lost out in recent years.

The irony is that all of those clubs were in a challenge mode and we aren't and lacking depth. It's a list management fail IMO. We don't exactly have a ready made better replacement for him. Buddy wasn't sitting out for Memberey. We paid fair market value for Howard who was pick 56 at the draft and got them an extra first rounder in a trade. Howard couldn't break into their regular side and they got Georgiades and Miles Bergman who both look like very good players for them. That's the way to make gold out of a shit situation. We sold off Hind for a pick that we didn't take and a lower pick than we paid for him despite two years or development.

Long was our best interceptor last year so was warranting his selection. He has dropped off significantly this year but unfortunately, you can't base selection in 2020 based off what is happening in 2021.

Coffield was our best interceptor wasn't he?

I have. He has been fantastic and really filled the void left by Saad and McKenna. I am clearly talking about where he sat last year in comparison to our other half back options.

We prioritised the development of Paton, Clark, Coffield and Long at half back instead of playing people like Savage and Hind there. We also moved our captain out of the backline for those 4 to develop together. That was not questioned last year when it was working, and not surprisingly, we made our list decisions and contract offers based off that information.

He's actually an upgrade on Saad amazingly and he got them pick 8 -Nick Cox who will be a once in a generation player and better than Daniher. Only Carlton or St Kilda could **** themselves so hard.

I think you're making excuses for the club.

It seems that anyone here that wants our club to take responsibility for poor decisions is seen as negative. Even if their motivation is they simply want the club to succeed.

You get nowhere from not recognising mistakes and learning from them.

St Kilda blew it with Nick Hind.

You would think by the reaction of some on here that we were the first ever side to have someone who wasn't best 22 go to another team and play well.

The club was well within their rights to only offer Hind a 1 year deal based off what he had shown. Essendon offered him a 2 year deal and he took it. Good for them.

We have much bigger issues right now than Nick Hind not being on our list.

You know if the tables were turned that Dildo would have ended up with a second round pick for him. Pretty sh*t that we didn't get him in his natural position as well. I was really excited when we got him because I'd watched VFL on tv and seen him running off half back. I remember commenting on here that he looked like cartoon character his legs were going so fast. To not utilise that was insane. Watching other players highlight videos of the year I was surprised by how many plays he was involved in. For the same reason we don't get anything out of Hill we wasted him, Savage and Hill. Mainly because Ratts wants long controlled kicked out of the backline not run and carry.

I'm all for Ratts having his own game plan that works for us but after we were worked out last year it's a failed plan that needs replacing. It doesn't work with faster ball movement that most other sides are using now and we can't even counter attack off it. It looks like his plan is to just keep training it until the day that King can kick 10 goals from 10 marks. Hopefully we have some players with confidence left by that time.
Lol

What a load of crap Gringo

A 2nd rounder for a 26 year old player not considered best 22 that could have just walked to the PSD?

He never lets anything go cheap, they got pick 8 for Saad who they paid a pick in the 30s for a few years earlier and hadn't improved in any real way. He's a campaigner but he's a shark.

I'm so sick of the attitude that wants to paper over an area where the club clearly got it wrong.

In the right position he's playing great footy... not good footy... great footy.

The fact is we'd be better off with him in our side.

We screwed that up.

Not sure why that's so hard to admit.
Spot on we did.

But it was hardly Gallaghers fault for not getting more in a trade.

The issue was that we refused to play him in the right position which means he couldn't cement his spot in the 22.

After that Gallaghers hands were tied.

He would have been laughed out of the room if he had have asked for a 2nd round pick or anything close.

So multitask.

Surely we can bitch about more than one **** up at once.

Saad was one of their best players so you are comparing apples to oranges.

He was top 3 in their best and fairest for 2 or 3 years straight.

Hind wasn't considered best 22 by the coaches.

Dodoro traded Colyer to Freo for a future 4th round pick so your statement that he doesn't let anyone go for cheap us false.

It doesn't matter who was doing the deal here, anyone asking for a 2nd round pick would have been laughed at.

He would have tried and got something back.

Point of order.
Our list manager did spot the talent in the player you're talking about, hence he drafted him. The misuse of him, and subsequent undervaluing is almost certainly %100 on the coaching group.

It’s like a civil war in here! Yes Hind is having a good year, I’m happy for him - but we let him go based of how we saw our list last year. I would be a lot more irritated if he was a 21 year old up and comer, but he isn’t. Let’s move on, and focus towards a youthful future - starting with the MSD - and see where that takes us.

No point spitting the dummy at the club half way through the season, as fun as that is. I don’t think last year was a fluke, and a little
optimism couldn’t hurt, our list as a whole is still strong.

He would have tried and got no more back otherwise a club woukd just walk him to the PSD.

He tried to get more out of Freo for colyer but at the end of the day he was traded for a future 4th just before cut off because Freo woukd have just taken him in the PSD.

Fact of the matter is, players that aren't considered best 22 at that age are worth next to nothing if they aren't contracted.

Butler was a premiership player, 4 years younger than Hind and already had close to 50 games under his belt. He was traded for pick 56.
