Just on this headline, is Billings really a whipping boy?
I feel like most saints supporters like him, he’s not a superstar but he’s a bloody good player who occasionally plays a blinder/goes missing.
Seems the whipping part is mainly from the media who constantly compare him to Kelly and Bont.
If you look at the first 20 picks of that draft I’d say he’s probably the 5th best player, hardly a huge mistake taking him number 3.

Billings compensation would be the key here.

Out: Billings compo, 2022 first round
In: Bing and change.
Use our own 2021 first on a mid.

Now if GCS were interested in Battle, send him for a later first round pick in lieu of change in the Bing deal.

If we could do that I think it would be a good outcome for us.

However, I would make a slight change, I would trade the compo from Billings and our first next year to GC for King, I don't think we would get anything back, I think they would be unwilling.

I would then look at trading Battle, as we wouldn't have a spot for him. I think Stavro said we might be able to get a top 20 pick, lets say it's a late 1st. I would then also look at potentially trading Ross and a future second-round for a late 1st. Effectively giving us three first-round picks this year and king.

In: King, 2021 1st round X2 (plus our original 1st round pick)
Out: Billings, Battle, Ross, 2022 1st round pick, 2022 2nd round pick

It only takes one big mouth per station per day to call up and give the media that kind of impression. Five could call up and stick up for him and it would have no traction.
Even on here, I think 90% of the vitriol has been at the club/recruiters for the decisions they made, not at Jack himself. Having said that, I've got most of the crazies on here blocked so my percentages probably mean nothing.

Part of me thinks letting him go would be a good move. Then I remember how well letting our other quality players go has gone for us. I really don't think the one extra draft pick we'd get for him will save us. Surely there are other ways we could get back into (at least) the seconbd round of the draft.

Billings is a good player, but he is nothing like Goddard or Dal Santo, they were genuine stars of the competition, who would more often than not influence the outcomes of games. Billings is more a good quality player who would do well in a good team, but can't carry a poor side on his shoulders as he relies a lot on his teammates.

The compensation pick we are likely to get for Billings, is probably going to be a lot higher than what we got for those two as well.

Is Ben King really a priority? I'd take him but IMO we are in much more desperate need of skillful, ball-winning mids and a key defender. The price for King would be something along the lines of 2 first rounders and Josh Battle. If we could convince Kelly or Merrett to come then I'd be willing to pay that price, but we have more urgent holes to fill. The two Kings really only fit in the team if we plan on using Marshall as the number one ruck as well. Unless Ben is willing to stop kicking goals and go into defence.

Agree with this. I get the appeal but he's right down the bottom of our list of priorities for me. Billings and a first rounder for him (which is the minium he'd take you'd think) would be a nightmare for us imo.

Agree he's not Goddard or Dal, but even the McEvoy trade turned out not to be worth it, and he wasn't quite a star with us yet. I hope you're right about the compo pick if it happens. I'm imagining it as an end of first round or second round (so about the same as Goddard or Dal) but if it does end up straight after our first round pick I'd be more okay with it.

I doubt we even look at him until 2022 trade period.

Might as well keep unless we get a compo band 1 which would be a top ten pick.

You think people on here are crazy , you should check out the so called Official St Kilda football club fans page , now that what you call a bunch of nuffies , they make Cooper look like a Rhodes scholar

Best case is
JB for band 1
Seb for band 3
Dunny for band 4
Lonie for a pick upgrade.

Time to finish the job and get behind Steele. We may as well go all in.
We've got enough to work with now B&B will get most of a season into them and when Pato, Gresh, Jones and Marshall are fit well be a much better unit.

Yep , he doesn't hurt you that's for sure , that's why he got the flick from us

I went to watch Frankston play against Coburg, he was easily the best player for either side and a class above. He won most of their clearances himself and they often got it back to him because he breaks lines. This is pretty shit if they are bagging him because they'd be pretty ****ed without him.

The romance of getting bing is obvious but giving up 2 first rounders to get him when we need mids would be ridiculous.

For the next 3 years every 1st rounder should be on a midfielder. Not a flanker who could play mid either.

If hanners contract is paid out I would have a chat with Steele sidebottom, would free up some cap space at Collingwood and he'd give us much needed on field experience.

Could a fwd line of Max king and Mason Cox work? Would fix the 2nd ruck issue.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. I'm on here because it's the least nutty, despite the anonymity of it all.
I don't go anywhere near the FB public page, and the members page is a huge disappointment.

Credit to the mods on here though, this place would be pretty feral without their efforts. Not pretty, completely.
Thanks guys.

I saw an article saying Mckay from Carlton had re-signed on a 2 year deal, just out of curiosity, does anyone know or have heard rumours of the $$$ of the contract, would love to compare it to the first 2 years of what King signed for with us.

If i had to do a whipping boy top 5 of players who are best 22 ( or debatably best 22 ) So not including Wood, Hunter, McKernan, etc...

Dunstan
Lonie.
Hill
Ross
Long

Maybe Billings sneaks in at 6th.

It's not going to be 2 first-rounders for Bing, it's probably closer to 3.

Basically, the Sun's future almost depends on him, they will build their team around him for 15 years. They have had enough 1st round draft picks. They have found a future superstar and they will do everything possible to keep him.

You would feel more confident if we'd had an elite record of drafting. There is a huge risk in trading away one of your top 10 players unless you are pretty certain of turning that pick into a long term upgrade. We haven't nailed a first round pick since BJ 16 years ago, if we lose him we do step backwards short term so you'd want to be 100% certain that we are going to get it right.

Paying overs for King who isn't a huge need is a massive risk as well. You are guaranteeing at least one good player with two top picks but you also risk missing out on the chance at two superstars by avoiding the draft and end up with a lot of your stocks tied up in one area of the ground leaving holes everywhere else.

I'm not against any of those guys going for that value but that's really going to hurt our depth which is already struggling.

You'd hope that the kids we bring in with those picks are ready to go from day one.

I haven't seen him play this year but the so called highlights package i saw of him was well lets just say was VFL standard no more

Bing will cost more than 2 firsts unless those firsts are top 5 picks. No way the cockroach let's him out of there without being adequately compensated.

If we're building for a flag, not that you'd know it, we need serious midfield depth. Realistically, we have a window of probably 10-12 years to get the cattle around Winx to have genuine crack. That's reduced significantly if you factor in the ages of Steele, Dougz, Wilkie etc. We simply can't be using multiple firsts in trades without trading out guns, which we don't have enough of anyway... Hopefully we start to put more resources into the draft and development. That's going to be our beat option I reckon

3 first rounders LOL only if they are picks 16, 17 and 18 and even then i still wouldn't do it

Well he seemed way above that standard to me. There are a few good players in most VFL sides and he stands out when he plays. Looks quicker, uses the ball better and sets up most of their play. They would be very relieved that he didn't get picked up. They might think he's racking up useless stats but they wouldn't be racking up any stats if he wasn't there.

Gold Coast would put ridiculous terms on him like Freo did with Hill. They would know we are a soft touch after that negotiation too.
