Think most agree with you
Why do you think he hasn’t spent more time in there?
I think maybe his versatility has probably cost him?

We've lacked good small defenders this year and he plays both roles well.

The fact Bytel and Dunstan can't really play anywhere other than midfield means that is where they play.

I doubt anyone actually thinks we only need mids. It's obvious we need another key defender and eventually a replacement for Ryder.

The thing with ruckmen is you can usually find a decent one at a low cost. Marshall and Ryder are examples of this.

It's bloody hard to find an elite mid outside the top 30 of the draft.
Unless we change course completely. Ryder will be with us next year. 1 year deal.

Heath will play with Sandy for a few more weeks. Until Atleast Covid restrictions reduce further due to the bubble the players are in - with young rucks, the best thing they can do - is focus on size and fitness immediately. The craft generally gets learnt with experience.

Yeah I was just reading that Heath will likely play for the Dragons this week.

I think we will see more and more ruckmen taken later. They are just too hit and miss at 18 and early in the draft.

And if you trade for one it costs a fortune in capital and cap space.

Our first centre bounce trio vs Carlton in the praccy..

Steele, Clark, Gresham. That was exciting.

By rnd 4 it's Steele, Ross and Bytel. Not exciting.

We have the cattle, just need to get them right and in form

It's still not the Dogs though. We still lack that elite player that turns games in our favour. Clark and Gresham are developing mids but neither are there yet. Gresham has the tools to become elite and so does Clark in a different way. I'm pretty confident Bytel could still be a gun too. Just looks to have stalled and has had probably the worst development of any player hs age. Missed two years injured, hit the hub and couldn't get games of any worth and now played as a medical sub with limited minutes. He's hardly played any footy for nearly four years.

Watching Sam Walsh become close to elite makes me want to get into the draft and find a gun mid, surely we are due to find a star this year.

And most end up cut by their original club and coming good at 26 to 28. Hickey, Pittonet even Witts and Mummy were all guys who got developed and cut only to come good later in their careers.

No one is the dogs mate...

Steele is a star, bloke gets 25+ every week and kicks goals.

Yes the other two are developing but blind Freddy can see they ooze talent.

Add in Crouch who's been a great pick up and sprinkle in some minutes from others and it's a good midfield.

Especially when you add in a fit Marshall.

It's not all doom and gloom

We still should have taken Goober and left him at Southport till preseason started.

The clubs point of view was that they had 10-12 blokes who would run through the midfield on any given week and preform strongly.

They’ll argue injuries have totally robbed us from doing that.

What we need to find is x factor/match winners in this draft to change the dynamic.

Personally I think our most dynamic players are victims of their ability to impact the games in different areas of the ground..

For example, we all want Clark in the middle and Billings fwd..

But because of players like Lonie, Dunstan, Ross, Bytel etc who can only play 1 role we have to move our talent to other areas of the field.

Imo our best 22 on the park solves this though, this issue has been largely brought on by injury

Didn’t we also get Ryder thrown in with Dougs?

Hill got us Ryder. Wanted to play together.

Ryder then told Dougs to hear us out after Port said they would be open to trading him.

I meant finding players who can turn a match. The special kind who influence the ebbs and flows.
The vibe I get is that this is spoken about often

Coz he'd be ready to go round 1. Heath is still a ways away..
You have no way of knowing if Goober would be more or less ready then Heath in round 1 NEXT year.

The fact is that we think Heath has more potential hence we drafted him. Being ready for senior football is just as much about having the talent required then just having the right body size, example Paul Hunter.

Steele is A grade but just off those absolute match winning guns. I see him in the Boak type level of top players but not quite a star category. Crouch a step down from that. Both the best we have currently available but we really need our own Bont or Petracca high impact pace setter and a few of the developing guys to become around the B+ level or above.

You only need one. They elevate the rest.

We look like we have plenty of decent mids but as you say that high end across all the lines is missing. We tended to take players with issues and the issues always seem to come back 10 fold. My overall impression of our list is that it's beige and low energy. Only Jones and Gresh have any really dynamic pace or energy levels and 2020 Butler perhaps. The rest are a bit like Billings, they do enough to draw a wage but they are tools down as soon as the weather starts to look cloudy.

Petracca, Bont even guys like Oliver, they ratchet up the tempo and change the team dynamic around them so that teams put too much focus in the wrong areas and leave themselves exposed.

I think it sounds as though us and Essendon were keen but he wasn't keen on Essendon. It might have been a factor but Port wasn't playing him regularly and needed to get his wages off the books. I think Dougal had been a long term target and we'd been in his ear before we even knew about Paddy being available.

Heath looks more like an old school ruck where as Goober could impact forward straight away but probably lower ceiling as a ruck.

Hopefully Libba knows what he's doing because he is going to make or break our next decade particularly if we take a step back.

Agree to disagree on that one then..

This Brad Crouch trade looks to have been a success however it has taken him a while to get his form right we now need to pick up a couple players we desperately need like a marking key CHB and a good ruck or good ruck prospect.
I was really not wanting to let go of Billings but because he has not signed yet he could very well opt to become a free agent and to tell you the truth if we can get a round one pick for him we should take it , the same with Ross.
Use it on elite talent in the draft or to poach a good player.

Having Steele , Crouch , Jones , Gresham , Byrne , Clark should make Ross expendable.
Billings plays his best as a half forward and having Higgins covers him along with Butler and they are both younger.
