If he's good enough, he'll make it. If he isn't, he won't. I expect he'll be in front of our draftees this year in terms of selection next year. If he's not then that's a good problem to have. Plenty of dominant teams over the last decade or so have shown the asset of having lots of midfielders who can push forward. Dogs roll Bont, Macrae, Liberatore, Dunkley, Treloar and Smith through their midfield. Bulldogs did it with Dusty, Cotchin, Edwards, Prestia, Lambert, Bolton, Graham etc. Peak Geelong had Ablett, Bartel, Selwood, Corey, Kelly, Ling, Chapman, Johnson etc.

Having plenty of midfielders is good if there are several that can rotate forward. It's what limits Bytel at this stage. Byrnes to me looks like a really useful asset to a midfield with how he uses the ball and the speed he has.
One thing we have to look at is the size of our midfield. Check out the big guns- Bont, OLiver, Wines, Petracca, Martin, Fyfe,Munday Sydney have a couple etc. These guys are impact players, they can break a pack. These players are in teams that make finals. Even with another recruited mid ( who will that be?) unless we get an impact midfielder in the 190cm plus range we will be heavily relying on winning the ruck hitouts and that is not guaranteed. Steele would be our biggest mid. Those other big mids just push you off the ball.

Mitch Cleary. Quick skim through it looks good.

Amongst other things talks Battle - and where to play him

Ratts’ contract ending end of 2022 - they’ll discuss that Feb/March… personally hope nothing is signed before at least the after the bye.

Preferred we kept Goddard & Dal Santo...

That was a tough period, I remember the shock of Lyon not turning up to a scheduled press conference...and then all the cap stretch stuff with players needing to be cut free. It was a slow painful bleed out. Then the poison dwarf with bits of optimism around Beau Wilkes and Siposs only to switch to Richo who was a relief in his boring for a while......but the beige-out set in and not being embarrassing any more got stale. I was tough on Lethlean but he seems to get shit done faster than the rest of the atrophied morons did in the previous decade. He seems to have a vision at least.

And here we go again 🙄

Draft experts were undecided.
The only reason he was ‘going 1 or 2’ was because we had the first pick and our recruiters were fools.
We were obviously leaking the the info that we were going to go for McCartin otherwise there’s no way he was in the conversation of 1 or 2 by anyone who had a clue other than that the word was the saints for some reason might take him at 1

"The growth of Sharman and Highmore leaves the Saints with a decision on swingman Josh Battle who is expected to stay at Moorabbin after his name was floated in recent trade talks.

"Sometimes your flexibility is your greatest strength but your greatest weakness too," Ratten said.

"He's had some good success on the wing, he's had good success as the second ruck, but he probably hasn't nailed the tall (spot) at either end.

"That's something we're discussing, do we give him a preferred end to go to? We've got to make sure we look after him, he's had a couple of stress fractures, that's probably the talking point as to where we shape him.

"We think we'll still keep him through the midfield at times and pick an end to go to."

Yep. They’re set on him on the wing.

This joint was so pumped about Petracca when Brian speaking was saying we were gonna take him & then Brian came on here one day & said we’d changed to Petracca & the board absolutely lost their sh*t! It was hilarious. After that, people slowly started to convince themselves that it was the correct decision because Riewoldt was old/injured & Dogs paid big for Boyd.

I was always a bit sceptical because his highlights made him look like a slow, undersized, no agility key forward that had good hands & a booming peg.

He never looked like a top pick, more a second rounder. Even if concussion didn’t finish him he looked like he was missing too many elite traits to become a dominant forward at the top level.

I wanted Peter Wright :$

Yeah he was.
Speculation was always that Melbourne would take him if we didn't.

"He's had some good success on the wing"

When was this success?
If I was Battle I’d be hightailing it out of the club if I’m reading that. Actually it
also makes me wonder why Ratts is so stubborn about it.

I thought that we made up the Battle trade talks on this thread.

I'm all for trading Battle for his own sake. Get him somewhere he can play forward or back every week and end this wing experiment.

It was a monumental stuff up. Own it.
AFL site had an anonymous poll on which club recruiters would take who at pick 1 in the 2014 draft. It was 16 for Petracca & 2 for Paddy. Says it all. Our club played themselves.
Dead right. Only had to watch him play and you knew he wasnt it. It was a load of rubbish perpetuated by the club and nothing to do with his illness. What got me was the amount of bullshit about how elite he was before he came to the club, he couldnt kick straight from 40m out....wtf...........

Yeah, it's definitely a factor in building a midfield, but it's one I think we're probably ok in. Steele and Crouch are good sizes. Steele in particular. Clark is 187cm and we need to prioritise his development. Those three should be a prominent part of the midfield in years to come. Martin (187cm) was Richmond's only midfielder above 185cm in their flags, so it's not a necessity to have several really big bodied midfielders. At this point, I think our sole focus needs to be on elite prospects in midfield, regardless of height.

True, but Martin is a different kettle of fish. A total matchwinner and big bodied. He did the grunt work regardless of his height. Probably incomparable in history for big games..ala leigh Matthews. I dont see Crouch busting packs....and Clark is not even in there yet as a permanent mid. You have to have one.

Owens is 190 and agile

True, we have to get these guys in the draft. Clubs wont trade big mids unless there is a go home factor and it costs big dollars. Yes we recruited a couple of average size mids last and this year who are good but we need that pack buster.
I’m so excited for this draft I just want to skip trade period because I’m still in fear we’ll butcher our draft hand
