Correlation isn't causation.
Yep I don't really mind how we managed to land Steele, Howard, Higgins, Butler, Crouch, Hill, Membrey, Jones if they get it done.

Maybe our quota of drafted quality will be King, Gresham, Clark, Billings, Coffield, Sinclair, Marshall, Wilkie, Bytel etc

We can't go back and re-do the drafts unfortunately, so have to work with what we have which isn't that far off with a few additional pieces to the puzzle.

Agree. If Paton comes back at full fitness then lockdown small defender role isn't available; we need to find minutes for the likes of Byrnes and Connolly at AFL level to help their development and I'd rather they had the minutes doing whatever role that Long would otherwise be doing.

Could be good for us, Essendon need some mongrel and he certainly provides that; plus they might overpay a little due to confidence from the Hind trade.
You are talking about Dodoro though

I'd happy trade Long for a 3rd rounder.

He isnt near the top of the pecking order for either position - half back or as a small forward.

And list spot wise, I think we would get just as much having Kent or Lonie on the list next year as we would having Long, plus we would then get another draft pick to use.

I would prefer Kent than Long

They managed to turn their absolute shithouse drafting into a strength though. I think that should be our aim too. You can't build a side out of recycled players, the system isn't set up for that to work and examples of to working aren't easy to find. Even Jackson, Pickett, Bowey etc were all in the last couple of drafts. They keep managing to add valuable pieces through the draft.

I'd rather keep Long than Lonie to be honest.
He has everything except an ability to find the ball.

I think he’s a very unselfish player somewhat similar to Sinclair in that respect. Long doesn’t demand the football, hasn’t figured out how to pick up cheap ball to stay involved and pad his stats and like Sinclair he’ll block and do the team oriented things.

Sinclair impressed just about everyone other than our selectors and long has his fans as well like Tim Watson. I could really see him with a new start and different coaching group becoming a real weapon. Lonie is never getting a shot anywhere other than as a small forward where we have a log jam of players in front of him. Happy enough to see him play a season at sandy or move on if he can find a home.

New attitude this year though, I’m sick of getting unders fair value or contracted players can stay put Imo.

Good shout. Kent is statistically better than Long in basically everything except tackling; and if we keep him it will be on the basis that he plays VFL unless we have injuries or he is absolutely smashing down the door; not this will he / won't he with Long.

I think from Long's perspective it's a great idea to get a fresh start, he has suffered from being played all over the park. He could win a Brownlow next year playing for Essendon and it wouldn't bother me greatly because there's no way he'll be winning one for the Saints in 2022.

A real sign of where a team is at is the value of its players at the rumoured trade table & the extent of the ‘loss’ they would create to the list.

Dunstan, Ross, Battle, Long - all very much semi-regular best 22 players this year - and I couldn’t really give a flying **** if they all left. And damage done to the list if that happened is pretty minuscule

Id only cry about Battle as he's the only one with an ounce of greatness about him, also because I played a bit of juniors with him. The rest are mediocre at best

I think they feel like they have rebuilt without telling anyone starting 3 years ago but not really laid out a roadmap. It's a great way to disenfranchise people and make them think you are doing it all wrong. They president said we were playing finals this year and again next year. That's not a great idea IMO and seems to be going against they way the list managers are going. We possibly have a plan to build around two King brothers and everything before then is just standing still but they don't articulate it.

I don't get that feeling at all. 2018 we picked up King and Bytel both for the future andstarted to look at late season speculators in Hind Parker and Young, two of who are still on AFL lists. Also elevated some rookie called Marshall and played a mature age named Wilkie

If we were rebuilding we wouldn't have picked up 5 ready made players in trades but would have kept picking kids in the draft. Our late draft speculation went
to new heights with Byrnes and Connelly both whom have shown they are AFL capable.

Again 2020 we selected two experiences AFL players in Crouch and Higgins a speculator in Alison and another ready made mature player in Highmore. A few top ups didn't work in Mckernan and Frawley, but we had limited success with Wood and Hunter. Seem to have struck paydirt with Sharman in the MSD, Heath is a young ruckman and can't be critisised. Has to be an upgrade on Alabaskis surely.

Seems more like a strengthening of the list depth overall looking to bring in the top quality or for the current talent to step up like Steele.

Bytel is a single position player and really would have been ideal to develop in the VFL until he was ready come in and be a best 22 player straight away. The 2 missed VFL seasons made that impossible unfortunately. Dunny going is clearing path but we might be pushing him into the deep end before he's learnt to swim. Time will tell I guess.

I would agree if we didn't have the likes of Steele and Crouch in the guts with outside experience in Ross and Clark and Gres adding to the quality. Dunstan had Steven and Armo a bit of Joey at his back end and not much more. He was thrown to the wolves and probably picked up his bad habits of grabbing and booting it to noone.
The difference with Bytel and Dunstan is that Bytel is defensive as shown with his 8 tackles against Freo. his run with role is ideal for a player like him, players like Mundy will take him to the ball and he can use his defensive skills to nullify one of the chief opposition ball users. One thing Steele started to do near the end of his run with role was that he would stop his opponent AND get his own ball. 17 possessions/8 tackles/ and 2 goals is a fair return for a player with under 20 games experience. Once he starts getting 2 or 3 more possessions a quarter he will be a really important player.

It only makes sense if we get something for them though.

No point gutting our list if we don't have anything to replace them with.

Looks like we won't get anything for Dunstan which is unfortunate.

Clark and Coff got early games based on talent and being top 10 picks. They performed well, per the standard expected of debutants, and maybe even exceeded expectations. But then they seemed to get a bit lazy. Especially fruit toast Coffield, who I imagine thought that after finishing 5th in the BNF after 2020 that he had it all worked out. Turns out that neither of them entered season 2021 anywhere near fit enough. The positive is that this can be remedied, and quickly. But do they have the ambition and the appetite? Time will tell.

Don't take any of this from me, Gallagher basically said this on the public record.

hard to impress when your jaw is smashed to pieces.

I followed early Lenny Hayes, Lenny even before he became a gun had an intangible quality. I haven't seen that in Bytel yet. Bytel reminds me more of Steele. I thought Steele was going to be a good solid tagger that sat somewhere between B and C grade. When he went on ball he seemed to go to all the wrong spots and almost needed to be lead to the ball by an opponent. A switch seemed to flick at some point and he exploded. Hopefully that's Bytel as well.

This is one reason I’m now on the Josh Battle midfielder bandwagon & I don’t mean on the wing, if he gets to tag players so as they can lead him to the ball as what happened with Steele, I think he could be a player to turn a game.
Although as a junior he was a forward his draft results looked pretty impressive.

” He finished in the top 10 in the 3km time trial at the draft combine and he runs a 15 beep test. “

He doesn’t know how to find the ball, nor is he a ball winner. If we want to finish at the bottom of the ladder, Battle would be a perfect midfielder

A lot of that footage shows him getting the ball up around the wing and pumping it inside 50. Definitely a winger.

Ben Long is an interesting one.

He's been disappointing this year but at the same time I wouldn't be happy about losing him for a token pick.

I can't see us getting heaps for him, even though he is under contract.
Could not care less if he never plays for us again, I'd be tempted to trade him with a pick to get the list spot back tbqh.

Wonder how much salary cap that would free up?

Probably enough to pay for Windy Owens Skinner and still have a list spot and a lazy $1M spare.

There's potentially a few credentialed coaches that could be available at the end of next season.
So when do the saints consider reappointing Ratten?
Assuming they don't wait to end of next season, what's the in season pass mark?

He is not agile enough , turns like a Mack truck

Running ability just isn’t enough though. I don’t even really understand why we’re trying him on the wing. He is a 193cm bloke with no speed and not much agility. And now that Sharman has shown more in five matches as a key forward and Highmore in 13 as a key defender, Battle is in no man’s land. He’s an interesting prospect and a natural sort of footballer but we aren’t good enough to carry a player like Battle in the 22 every match, we need proper runners for that spot. Not sure what the future holds for him.
