6. Will Brodie (Gold Coast)

Will Brodie has struggled to maintain a spot for the Suns, finding himself on the fringes of selection. The midfielder finds himself on a team with Touk Miller, Noah Anderson, Matt Rowell, Hugh Greenwood, Brandon Ellis, David Swallow, and Brayden Fiorini all being ahead of him in selection.
Due to this, he has only managed to play 25 games since his debut in 2017 (with one game being the medical sub).
For Brodie, opportunities have been his biggest issue, playing solid football when playing. He averaged 16 disposals, two tackles, three clearances and nearly eight contested possession per game this season.
Since his rookie year, he has averaged 19.19 disposals, 4.14 tackles, and 4.05 clearances.
Despite being starved for AFL opportunities, Brodie showed excellent character by making the most of his coaching and lower level matches.
He was awarded the Suns VFL player of the year in 2021 for his consistent play throughout the season. His 31.7 disposals per game were eighth-best in the entire league, while also averaging six tackles too.

He also demonstrated other skills that he hadn't been able to show in his limited AFL experience. There was an ability to hit the scoreboard and he was praised for his exceptional leadership on and off the field. He became a valuable member of the team being a mentor to many of the younger players.
Brodie will continue to find himself on the outside looking in due to the depth of the Sun's midfielders. There have already been reports of Brodie looking for more opportunities elsewhere in the upcoming off-season.
Similar to Gold Coast trading away Peter Wright in 2020, the Suns could facilitate a win-win trade for both parties. Brodie wouldn't cost much for a rival club but is still developing as a prospect.
At only 23-years of age at the beginning of next season, he could provide some inside midfield depth straight away. His age and work ethic would see him continue to improve and prove to be more valuable than what the Suns would expect in return.
We don't need anymore depth , we need quality , why would we want him ?

Your right. Any mid we bring in needs to be a quality mid not depth.
We need ruck depth and KPD depth with hope of both becoming best 22 in the future

To me he looks like he's being pushed to play a role when he looks best playing with freedom. A guy we know is a financial sponsor at the Dogs through his family business. He gets to the club a lot and reckons Bevo is a gun coach because he tries to get players to find their flair. He encourages the players to do things that make the footy they play free and fun. Long looks like the type that needs that kind of environment. He looks bored and restrained. When he used to go for screamers and tackle like a maniac or snap impossible shots he was glorious. He looks straight jacketed.
Well in the GF the Doggies players looked like they were free - free of any responsibility for an opponent after half time! Don't think they were having any fun though.....

I feel like Long's shocking 2021 was a result of his suspensions in 2020, the last of which rubbed him out of our second final. I watched him a lot early in the year and he looked like a bloke who was second guessing himself. The Q is whether he can find the balance between aggression and restraint. He certainly failed this year, but people forget how important he was to us in 2020, especially at the business end.

Trade 9 & future 3rd to Richmond for 15 & 26 or….. 9 & future 3rd to GC for their 19 & 22 or does those picks put us too far back in the pack?

Maybe Long with a future late pick to either club for their 26 or 22?
Dont mind the latter of those options.
Not a fan of moving back in the first round personally

We’re going to have to get creative to get another early pick or we’re going to move a player on that actually has value and is a proven commodity. To me, Membrey as a footballer is expendable, but Membrey as a club person probably isn’t. I’d say there’d be 5 players who are off limits and the rest probably don’t have the value we need to get early picks.

You could also say you could have all the midfield talent in the world, but your not going to be breaking out of any stoppages if your 75kgs. Unless you have some freak type of power to weight ratio

Imo pace and agility come into the equation as well. There are quite a few gun midfielders who aren’t tall or built like tanks that have dominated over the years.

Obviously everyone is looking for that guy with the lot, height, pace, skills but you’re going to pass up a lot of potential guns if you‘re obsessed about a few centimetres and 5 kilograms. In a game where mids are running machines carrying too much weight is more likely to hold you back, the average player is covering over 12 klm’s per game with mids averaging even more.

We need some pace and skill in our mids and it’s a crime we passed on petracca, let’s just hope we use our first pick on a player with the attributes we need.

Do your best 22 and then list notable absences. I dont see how someone like Ross is even wanted anymore...

Paton Howard Wilkie
Webster ? Sinclair
Hill Steele Dmac
Billings Membrey Gresham
Butler King Marshall
Ryder Crouch Jones
Higgins Clark Byrnes Coffield

Players that could justify a game:
Sharman Connolly Geary Long Highmore Hanneberry Bytel Wood Battle

Probably highlights why players like Long and Battle are also in discussions on a trade.

Then add in a high first rounder which we will want to atleast blood. Gonna make things super competitive.

After stabilising the list with senior talent NOW is DEFINITELY the time to trade out some players and recycle through through draft. Even if the call is a 50/50 one and or a young player last taken with a decent pick.

Nows the time to take a punt. High risk. High reward.

Fully fit list

B: Paton Howard Webster
HB: Sinclair Wilkie Highmore
R: Ryder Crouch Gresham
C: Jones Steele Hill
HF: Higgins Sharman Billings
F: Butler King Marshall
Int: Membrey Clark Coffield Hannebery
Med Sub: McKenzie
Emerg: Bytel Byrnes Long

Need another Key Position Defender. Not sure Wilkie is cut out to fill the KPD role week after week, but he would give it a good bloody crack. Love him

Edit: I wrote out the team & completely missed Membrey… Healthy full list makes things tricky

Your asking a lot of Sharman to play CHF , he is never going to be a CHF IMO , more like the Gunstan role

How about this as a speculative trade if the club wants a 2nd round draft pick.

Wilkie to Port. They have just got rid of Clurey as well and we have excess of the 3rd tall type of player. Highmore, Battle or Coff could play his role.

He is a very solid player. A couple of seasons of the 100 game milestone as well. But if you want to get you need to give and he is a type we have plenty of.
Not a chance, Wilkie could be AA. He is that good and something from nothing, wouldn't trade him for anything less than a Top 10 pick.

Watch him closely, he is a gun

Any interest for Battle from Bris?
That's probably the only way 9 turns into 14 and 18.

I'd be apprehensive even doing it, it's a fair slide back from the apparently Top 12 cream of the draft this year

Not what his mate said. He reckons we wouldn't pick up the phone. He'd told everyone he was a Saint already.
I highly doubt we were just ghosting his calls.

Normally those types of things are done between manger and club.

Was Jye trying to call reception? The reception lady was probably on holiday...

They barely play to their ‘positions’ these days so it’s more written just for structure

Higgins was officially named CHF a few times this year. It was a tough ask too

Long is an interesting one. Had a great season last year but this year really struggled. I'd be sad to see him go because I see him as a guy with potential, but if someone was offering a second you'd have to take it.
This is what gets me, longy has never had a great season yet I keep hearing it. I think you’d struggle to find where he had a great game. He’s looked like he might be a player for 50 plus games but hasn’t really delivered much at all, he’d need to really turn things around to be in our best 22.

Well thanks for that , yes i know when clubs name teams it means Jack sh1t but if you going to name a best 22 i would have thought they would be in the positions they would line up in

Easy fix , swap Marshall and Sharman

There is way more chance of Sharman playing a CHF role in future than Marshall, which is why I wrote it that way

Interesting.
Not picking a fight with your line up.
But no Battle Long Ross Dunstan and Coffield on the bench.

So in essence they are not top 22 and if we cam get something that develops into top 22 you do it. 3or4 of the 5 should be traded if the chance arises.

Brodie no thanks otherwise we will have the debate over him or Bytel ad nauseum.

We like Port backs so why not Linnert.

Rucks let's give Hunts a crack with a preseason.

We need to move up in the draft not backwards and need to conjure a late first and late second for ngas from the above list.

Coff I am happy to keep but there are a queue for his spot and if we add Linnert it just gets longer.

We need more A graders and the best chance is from the draft as you only burn one pick....or Free Agency bit the free agent has to be there and want to come to you...there's the challenge

I think hes closer to a genuine key forward than he is to Gunston to he honest.

He's still quite skinny but he has a great set of hands and a very good contested mark which isn't really a strength of Gunstons.

Sharman is averaging twice the amount of contested marks than Gunston has over his career which is pretty impressive.

Sharman has also always struggled with his endurance so that will have to improve out of sight if we want him to play a Gunston role.

I think hes going to be best suited close to goal as a genuine marking option.

No Battle, Ross or Dunstan because I don’t believe they are best 22, and 2 (maybe all 3) of them may not even be at the club next year

I thought it sounded like we were fed up with his manager for using Essendon to ask for more money so we just said, thanks but no thanks. Shouldn't Caldwell be pissed at his manager if he wanted to be at the Saints?

I love this time of year because my missus just called me insane for checking bigfooty and trade radio as soon as I wake up before telling her good morning

Just tell her to post on here if she wants you to talk to her lol.

We have less kids and have given up 1st and 2nd round picks to bring in the older players over the last 10 years. We replaced the Trout generation by buying up from other teams. A lot of our kids are highly speculative late pics. Byrnes pick 52, Connolly 64, Bytel 41, Sharman and Heath mid season draft. Our 2 players under 21 that were high picks are King and Allison. Coffield is our only other player under 22.

That's our entire under 21 brigade. It's not that they don't break out, they just aren't there. When we used our high pick on King we found an absolute gun funny enough.
So what?
Are you keen for more top 5 picks?
Because there's really only 1 way to get them and I'm sure you wouldn't like that either.

I don't think you can get rid of both Long and Battle, They're the aggressive type that can spark a team and getting rid of both is crazy. If you did you would be left with Kent as that type of player and (to me) Battle is a much better and younger player than Kent.
I was thinking that Membrey could become a permanent swing player who plays off the wing/bench, That would have Battle play Membrey's role along side Sharman and King with Marshall/Ryder. You could also rotate Battle and Membrey for flexibility.
The biggest problem when trying to get out of the back 50 has been a marking forward who could move the ball well along the wing and as we know both Membrey and Battle are good kicks with decent tanks.
So my best 22 would look like this:

B: Paton, Howard, Highmore
HB: Hill, Wilkie, Sinclair
C: Membrey, Gresham, Billings
HF: Battle, Ryder, Sharman
F: Butler, M. King, Higgins
Foll: Marshall, Steele, Clark

Int: Byrnes, Bytel, Jones, Crouch
Emg: McKenzie, Webster, Kent, Wood
