I think the concept of 2 big bodied defenders is getting replaced with mobile intercept types that can work as a team. Highmore is probably the guy that best fits our needs so I’d prefer we just stick to that strategy rather than look to pick any KPDs.
Plus we still have Joyce.
l tend to agree and honestly l just wish they'd stick Battle back there for that very reason.

Which is why someone like Thalia might be an option. Fill in for a year until Allison develops.
Yeah might be a good shout.
I have big doubts on Allison. He was plucked out of nowhere and looks a long way off it. But I've been wrong a lot of times before. And vfl hasn't been able to do much for player development

SEB ROSS

Morris reported last month that Ross is weighing up his future after being underwhelmed with St Kilda’s two-year offer that includes a trigger for a third season.

If Ross does opt to explore his options, he’ll be one of several uncontracted inside midfielders on the hunt for new homes including Luke Dunstan and Will Brodie.

“(Ross) Wants more than two years with a trigger for a third. There’s not a lot of interest for him at the moment,” Morris said.

JACK BILLINGS

Morris also reported last month that Billings is weighing up signing a four-year extension from the Saints on reduced money to his current contract, naming Port Adelaide as a potential suitor if he decided to test the market.

Billings is coming off an indifferent 2021 season, averaging 20 disposals per game – his worse return since his debut season when scaling numbers from 2020’s shortened games – before a hamstring injury prematurely ended his campaign.

Alas, the 26-year old is expected to remain at Moorabbin.

“We think Jack Billings will stay on a four-year deal at the Saints,” Morris said.

It looks like Ross and Billings can't get better/any offers elsewhere, what does that say? And Ross still isn't happy? The mind boggles.
I'm not sure why Billings is getting 4 years, unless he's on a significantly good salary for our cap space.
Maybe the penny will drop with a few that they have been overpaid for many years only because we had to. Free market says NO.
Think of it as we've heavily front-ended their career salaries.

I feel a bit sad for Ross that he's not had any interest, and sadder for our club that we'll probably end up retaining him. Hopefully he gets demoted to depth and is not a lock for the starting line up next year, ditto Gears.

Billings is weird, I really hope a club comes in for him, he really does need a fresh start and we need to wipe the slate. He'll never be more than an occasional highlight for us, I don't see how we turn him to a matchwinner or a real leader. If he stays, he has to be dropped from the leadership group, ditto Ross.

We should have punted both 2 years ago.
Have been watching lots of highlights on YouTube over the past few weeks, amazing how much Billings pops up in them, either making the play or kicking the goal.

Even this year with a foot injury since R5 he averaged 20 posessions a game.

A good run with injury and a locked in 4 year deal could see him back to a vital member of the team. Happy for him to stay.
Ross, hope he goes in my opinion.

Billings did not want to go, understood his offer would be significantly less, but agreed to the contract without looking too hard after the 4th with triggers was offered.

Would have got offers on the open but not more than us or a bit more and less years.

Happy to keep

I'm guessing Ross will stay.

Nobody will want him.
Given we already have 5 out the door it is not the end of the world keeping Ross as long as he is only paid a basic wage which it sounds like we offered.
Would personally prefer to keep him than Kent. He provides good depth and can play a few different positions

We were never going to get a decent pick for him as FA Compo. We can always trade out future picks to find NGA points if we need them.

The problem with that is he gets games ahead of others.

If he stays he needs to be a last resort.

Rather move on tbh

I am not for him getting a game ahead of others but if it comes down to playing him or Kent I know what I would prefer.
Surely with a fully fit squad pressure for spots will either make him flourish or fall out.

There werent many to drop him for this year.

To be perfectly honest I’d rather run out with 21 players than to see Ross ever play again.

Surely the only way Kent and Ross play is if we are struck down by injuries - having Steele , Crouch , Jones , Gresham , Clark there is no need for him and no where to hide him on the field.
It time for Byrne , Bytel , Connolly to get game time , of course if they warrant it.
Same goes with Geary.

Exactly my view. All the players you named I would hope would play in front of Ross.
But if we have another year like this one we may be calling on all 40 players.

Ross as depth like Jones, Hibberd, Melksham, Jetta play for Melbourne is not a bad thing as long as we arent paying them an arm and a leg.
Just because he is listed doesnt mean he needs to play but could put pressure from below much like Dunstan did this year.
If we delist him or he goes for a end of 3rd rd pick we arent going to gain much. Just a couple of points to spend and a spot for a DFA

Out of the last 6 sides left in the comp, Port are probably the side that sets up like that.

Dogs, Dees, Geelong, Brisbane and the Giants all went in with at least two genuine tall key defenders.

They then usually have their Highmore types around them.

Is it a faux pas by the AFL site that Dunstan is identified as delisted? Why in the world would we delist him before the trade period, when we aren't sure of the level of interest or trade value? Seems like a massive mistake by the club it this has already been undertaken...
Unless Dunstan said he wanted out and the AFL said we wouldnt get compo.
They seem to be pretty open about the compo to clubs

We would have got something, we could have used it on an academy kid. Even absolute trash players get something back.
