Could be great for Brisbane but if I'm Freo I don't blink here.

Assuming pick 6 comes in for Cerra there is no way I'm giving that up. Pick 8 either.

Pick 6 could be Amiss. WA, KPF, exactly the sort of young talent I want to have developing with this squad.

Pick 8 can be used on a mid to replace Cerra. Get them in and learning with Brayshaw and Serong.

I'd offer the Lions my 2nd pick this year, plus next year's first. If Brisbane absolutely pushed it then I'd swap 8 for their first this year and take a mid there.

Gonna be a fun two weeks watching Peter Bell go to work on someone else! Expect the deal to be done with 10 mins left on the last day.

Never assume anything about the trade period. Shits about to get wild.

This is the beast that the AFL has created... where just about every fan whose club is outside of finals doesn't give a crap about the rest of the finals anymore, just get to trade week and the draft!

The off-season is bigger than the GF these days. Waiting for the the GF to finish... it just holds up 16 clubs and it's fans!

If Coff can get back to his 2020 form, we have an elite interceptor there.

Point is, having a deep midfield isnt the only way to be a contending team. We dont need to pass on Bing or another tall just because some of the top teams have much deeper midfield. We can build a team with different strengths and still challenge at the end of the season like Port - who dont have a deep midfield - have.
Our elite interceptor has actually only played 12 games.

Tommy Highmore is the best reader of the footy for a defender. Not to mention he’s courageous as.
6.4 average intercepts per game (most at the club) in his first year whilst also being sub in a couple of games too.

not sure he’ll ever have the offensive game like Tom Stewart but that’s who he reminds me of.

I’m a been massive fan of our recruiting lately. They have my trust.

Notable recent(ish) draftees:

- King / Clark / Coffield / Paton / Bytel / Byrnes / Connolly / Highmore / Sharman / Heath (haven’t seen him yet but I think he’ll be a gem).

Notable recent recruits:

- Jones / Howard / Ryder / Hill / Butler / Crouch / Higgins.

I’m extremely bullish the more I think about it. Crouch had quite a good year, and I think Higgins has been an extremely underrated pick up. I hope he’s a long time player for us, so creative and has footy smarts. I was Uber impressed with some of his games, his marking is excellent. Still pinching myself we got him from Tigers, our 2017 crop is looking promising. Interesting to see what happens with Clavarino. Throw in 1st rounder, NGA’s that’s a young and exiting team given development trajectories. Plus players like Wilkie, Steele and Marshall who are just really likeable and effective players. And plenty of other players I’m not even mentioning like Gresh, Sinclair, Billings and Membrey.

Keep it going, we are paving a new way out of the miserable 2010s. I’m honestly ecstatic, imagine if we get Bing 2023. And even if we don’t, that coin and trade collateral will just go to another gun player.

However the last party trick I want to see has the potential to be the greatest. Getting a star player with the first round pick, that would really cap it off. Anyhow this is the trade thread so the party trick I wanna see if that is more stabilising please. Get in a player like McLean or someone from left field. Someone young and keen who can do a job. We need to build the club and it’s depth. To do this simultaneously with good drafting, with already a stellar list and potential big recruits on the horizon is to take this club to the next level. Sorry for the rambling, but as a young bloke myself, it honestly feels like a new generation and horizon. I’m not expecting a 2022 flag or anything like that, but there is a lot to be excited about as a Sainter. This is gonna be a long off-season.

It makes sense for sporting organisations and clubs to make off season attractive to fans. Only one club in the league can ever win it, meaning that the vast majority of fans finish the season disappointed.

But an unlimited amount of clubs can "win" the trading and draft periods, no wooden spoons, everyone is happy. For a generation that are as satisfied looking at scores on their phones as they are watching an actual match, it's perfect.

Bloody sad though.

Brisbane have no incentive to accept a shity offer from Freo. Neale is contracted for 2 more seasons. And Peter Bell has made it very clear that overs is the only acceptable price for a player under player contract - see Brad Hill.

Brisbane has a father son prospect next year who is looking like a top 3 prospects so have no use for a future first.

Bell will need to pony up at least that pick 6 and something else.

Will be a luxury to have both of them.

If we persist with the undersized backline, Highmore and Coffield both intercepting might help cover us being short down back.

Yep, May at 193 is a.very different player to Highmore at 193

He plays more like Lever though. Lever is an interceptor. May is more a true KPB who can play on a tall but can also mop up anything that drops in his zone. Petty has come in to free up Lever from playing tight and he can get around the backline mopping up more. I think that's why we want another KPB, free the interceptors to room more and Howard was more of a mobile intercepting back than a true KP as well. Melbournes defence works so well because they drop their wingmen back to help block up the backline and use Salem to distribute through elite kicking.

Hill has been pretty good since going back and definitely helps having a line breaker back there.

Will need elite pressure from the mids to make this effective mate. Unsure if we can sustain that - see Geelong game as an example. Once the play slows and the chip happens we arent very good.

Agree.

At the moment we've got Wilkie playing that 2nd key defender role.

He's a serviceable defender, he's played some good games and struggled a bit in others. I'm just not sold he's a genuine key defender and having one would free our Lever types up hugely.

Even Wilkie himself was a very good intercept mark in his first year and that part of his game has all but disappeared.

The issue we'd be left with if we did find a genuine key defender is whether we could play Coff, Wilkie and Highmore all in the same side.

Probably not a bad problem to have though.

We don't like chip possession games being played against us. Last year that tore us open too. We probably need a plan to cover that.

I hope we don't go for a high end big ticket stopper. I think you can carry a more basic player who just wears a man when the rest is quality.

It is a bit of a problem though. You have 3 guys who should all be in the best 22 and none of them look particularly adaptable. Probably ideally you have a stopper back come in but that really pushes probably two of them out. Highmore probably the best of them on limited exposure but then we have Coffield and Wilkie at Sandy. Joyce or Clav could have played that stopper role but we seem to be happy to play Wilkie most weeks. Maybe we persist with that model where those guys come in when there is second dominant tall forward in the side? Ideally Coff could learn to play wing.

We did a lot better in the 2nd half of the year defensively despite playing with a smaller defence. Around the 5th best team in the last 10 rounds of the season defensively despite playing a lot of top 8 teams in that run.

Definitely need to work on defending the ball being chipped around but we seemed to have found something that works defensively for us.

No way we'd have two of them at Sandy.

2 get a game even with a key defender IMO.

Coff is definitely the most adaptable and might have a future on the wing, but hehasnt shown that style yet. He rarely uses his pace to advantage.

I don't think a team needs two elite "gorilla" key defenders. We have Dougal who is very good.

Look at the preliminary finalists: Geelong have just Henderson and then get by with Henry and others. Port Adelaide have Jonas, then McKenzie on a tall. Melbourne have May, but Lever plays off his man, and the Doggies have Keath and that's all.

One pure defensive key position player is all that is required in today's game, with other 190-194cm types who can intercept and play on smalls and talls with good effectiveness.

Which is what we already have (Howard, Wilkie, Highmore, Coffield with Joyce & Clavarino perhaps staying at the club in 2022).

Having said all that I wouldn't mind Talia as insurance (essentially filling the list spots vacated by Frawley and Carlisle).

Knowing Freo they will trade him to Brisbane for Lachie Neale.

funny this was just mentioned on 3aw that lachie wanted to go back to Brisbane. and brisbane will respond to those reports today. :p

Nice to see Captain Jack recognised by his peers. AFLPA Most Courageous Player, 3rd in Best Captain, and 5th in MVP. What a season he had, averaging 29 disposals, 14 contested, 8 tackles and six clearances, all of which are ranked elite. He couldn't have done any more for us this season. What a player! 😍
hopefully next year Brownlow and us and in the finals. It would be difficult for Steel to win a brownlow if we don't don't make finals next year

You've left a few players out there Punter

Geelong have Henderson and Blivcas who is nearly 200cm. They then have Koldjas in between them and Henry.

Melbourne then have Harrison Petty at 197 to go with May and Lever.

Dogs have Gardner to go with Keath

As.i said in an earlier post, Port were the only team in the 6 last teams left to not run with two genuine tall key defenders.

They did have AA CHB though to make up for that
