Footy changes very fast.

It wasn't that long ago that Richmond won a flag with one key forward and Grigg as their second ruck.

Now sides seem to be going tall down back and tall down forward.

Melbourne have 3 key defenders and a similar sized forward line to what wed have if we got Bing.

Most good sides are running with 2 to 3 tall key defenders that can intercept and then even having medium intercepting types around them.

West Coast were about the only side running with 2 genuine rucks and others were just throwing undersized players in there to pinch hit, now most of the best sides are going with a pair of them.

I imagine teams are opting to go tall in the forward line because the A grade midfielders are now essentially more dangerous than the specialised small forwards. When you have 2-3 midfielders going forward and kicking goals in open play they're essentially crumbers who can get their own ball

Nar, I genuinely believe we aren't planning on him for this year.

Trying to get picks this year makes a lot sense.

We need to add midfield talent to our list before Bing and this year's draft is full of them.

If we can also get a pick before our NGA selections we could end up with a draft haul of 4 top 35 picks which would be great.

We've also got very few 18-21 year olds on our list (less than anyone) so I'd imagine we'd want to fix that.

Me might not have many 18-21 year olds but the majority of our list are 25 and under.

Our improvement comes from within. Guys like Clark, Coff, Higgins, Bytel, Byrnes, Connolly, Highmore, Paton, King and Sharman all improving 10% on last year.

Plus a healthy Gresh, Ro, Jones.

ALSO, it’s important to note how much turnover we’ve had over the last couple of years. Another year of everyone meshing and playing together/understanding how best to use eachother etc

Howard, Jones, Hill, Butler, Higgins, Ryder and Crouch are all best 22 that have joined in the last two years. That’s a third of our best 22.

Add to that King, Clark, Coff etc and it’s pretty clear that we have a promising list that haven’t played much together but with some luck on the injury and Covid front. We’re gonna bounce really quickly.

Yeah from my understanding there is no difference (in the rules) between a delisted free agent and an unrestricted free agent. Matter of fact the term ‘unrestricted’ isn’t even used in the rules. It’s just free agent and restricted free agent. But because Dunstan qualifies as a FA, we get compensation if he leaves.
Surely not as a DFA

In trade terms, there is no difference between an UFA and a DFA. The player can walk to his club of choice.

I think you still need to have a good balance of age on the list.

I don't think having a massive gap in quality for 3 or 4 years is great list management.

This seems like the perfect year to hit the draft, much like Port did in 2018 and Melbourne did in 2019.

Cameron and Hawkins: 196cm & 198cm
Naughton and Bruce: 195cm & 198cm
Dixon and Marshall: 200cm & 198cm
Brown and McDonald: 200cm & 194cm
Daniher and Hipwood: 201cm & 203cm

Although they cross the magical 200cm line, the Kings are more mobile than the majority of that group. So, I’d suggest you can fit 2 x 200cm forwards easily. The game, and the players within it, is changed/changing.

Brisbane also roll with Dan McStay who's 195cm and Tom Fullarton (202cm) got some games. Plus Big O rests forward while Daniher pinch hits in the ruck.

If the club wants to do this then the picks need to be no later than pick 18 because bids for Daicos and Darcy will be matched.

Pick 18 will become pick 20. Saints can match any bid from pick 21.

I would be targeting Brisbane’s picks if we decide to go down this path. But our football department will have good intel about what other clubs might be doing.
There are also a few other father son / academy players who have been spoken as going late teens to early 20's at various times. Not sure where they sit these days though
Jase Burgoyne (Port)
Bodhi Awland (GC)
Blaine O'Laughlin (Adel)

Last year 3 NGA's went in the first round and ended up at sides that finished in the top 8. JUH to Dogs 8th, Lachie Jones to Port 3rd and Reef McInnes to Pies 6th

As I posted in the Draft thread, Saints and Carlton are the only clubs to not get a kid through the NGA system in any way. Arguably two clubs who've needed it most. The AFL is a farce.
Also the 2 clubs who got the worst zoning out of the lot too

Isn't there a point where the club officially de-lists them. IE no longer a part of the StKilda football club.

At that point they would be former AFL players, and no further compensation payable.
I'm pretty sure the afl contract year ends October, I would think if your not contracted at that stage you would be delisted

A bit like Paddy & Roma couldn’t work together that so many on here protested?

I think the argument was more that playing Paddy as the No 1 ruck would stunt the development as Marshall as a ruckman, compared to if Marshall was played as the No 1 ruck all the time.

As it stands Marshall's actual ruck craft has not improved.

The rest of Marshall's game is very good. The following part of his game is excellent, but his actual tapwork has not really progressed.

Marshall could well be the best forward ruck in the competition, and so yes has proven to be a great fit with Paddy as the No1 Ruck.

At the ruck contest Marshall does seem to lack the leap that a good ruckman uses.

So the strategy now (and perhaps it always was the club's actual plan) could well be to find a replacement No 1 ruck to Paddy, rather than Marshall become the No 1 ruck.

Max Heath could well be that player, but he is raw. So we may need a fill in for a year or three. Hunter is not that player.

Someone like Ladhams would be workable, as long as he is ok to not play every game in 2022. But that would be more playing two ruck forwards, than a No1 ruck and ruck forward.

It is still pick the best player available. But when it comes time to call out a name if we rate two players pretty much the same and one is a mid, then go for the mid.
Yeah I get that.

But if we are talking about getting Bing then the available mid would need to be Sam Walsh rather than Adam Cerra.
