Bulldogs Probably have the 2nd best midfield in the comp. probably the best if you consider how deep it runs. But imo flags these days are won in defence.
melbourne have best 1-2 tall combo in May and Lever. Excellent distributors in Salem and Bowey. And roll players like Petty and Hibberd.
Dogs defence is pretty average. Dale and Daniel are excellent distributors but that’s about it. Compare it to their 2016 team and it’s not even close.
Go back through every GF winning side over the last 20 years and have a look at how strong their defence was
A strong midfield definitely, and we need another A grader but another A grade tall defender to partner Howard and Wilkie would see us improve drastically

For me mids when you the flag. If Lever and May were on the receiving end of that centre square demolishing they would not have stood a chance just like the dogs defence.

We will probably have to unfortunately. We are going to have a heap of free list spots this year and we are looking at seriously cutting into our depth. I can't see us taking more than 4 players in the draft including NGAs. Losing Dunstan and Ross types with out a back up would make us 2 midfield injuries off playing kids and players from other positions in the mids. Good for development, not great for playing finals.

Luke Jackson, James Jordon, Jake Bowey, Kozzy Pickett. All first or second year players who played the entire finals run and most of the year. Melbourne weren’t concerned about playing old farts like Jones there. They played the kids and won the flag. No reason our kids can’t just be good.

Same, but let's not gloss over the fact that Melbourne got Jackson (and to a lesser extent all of their draftees that year) as a result of finishing 17th on the ladder. There was no grand plan or design involved. Rather, Melbourne had an emerging young list filled with talent, lost in a prelim, and then capitulated for 2 years, which allowed them to go back to the very top end of the draft once again and get even more elite young talent. Yes they nailed the picks, but to even get the chance to do so was pure luck, not strategy, and something that cannot be replicated (nor should be try to).

i've got a bit of a different take to others on this.

i actually agree with Healy and its not because i think its insulting to GC. it's because it backs our club into a corner. we are telling people we should be able to get that trade done and we are not even trying to hide it. Caro has reiterated it on national TV. Lloyd has done the same and on radio. its gone into print media and social media.

so what happens if we don't make this happen. we are going to look like absolute fools. so brazenly stating another clubs player is ours, then when we go to make it happen and it falls over? either because he re-signs or he nominates another club.

this bullishness cuts both ways. great if comes off. but if it doesn't it looks bad.

but lets imagine he doesn't re-sign and he nominates us. how does this position us come trade time, after all this bravado. same for any contract negotiation.

i would have liked us to be quiet and work behind the scenes to get that one sorted. instead of calling something 2 seasons out! something that's not even in our control!

again it's not GC i am concerned with. it's us.

This trade has been mooted since the minute Ben was presented with his Suns’ jumper.
I’m not sure we would ever have been able to keep this one under the radar tbf.
