If Oscar goes down with a season ender in round 1 do you trust playing the entire season inc finals with Fullarton as primary ruck? Seems a bit risky if you want to have a full crack while zork, rich and neale are still around.
I couldn't agree more, we are in the flag window NOW, plan for 2022 not just beyond, 1 list spot looking solely at 2022 is not going to sabotage our future, if O goes down for an extended period I have no confidence that Fullarton/H.Smith/Lane/Ballenden could do an adequate job as the primary ruck.

However if we keep Archie there is no need for another ruck cover, although my confidence in Archie as fulltime ruck cover for O is not much above the 4 I noted above IMO.

Not necessarily looking at this potential ruck trade in as a plug and play 3rd tall forward, he would be a just in case O goes down break glass option.

Briggs or CCJ could fit the bill. Shouldn't cost a lot, both could be a good second banana and shown that they can be capable at the level. Without knowing either player intricately, I'd think that there is a fair scope for improvement and further development in their game.

Looking at it from purely our perspective, but yes I agree with you.

However, If you had a young family how much would you need to be paid to justify moving interstate for one year?

Me personally? Given how much gets chewed up in tax, and then the cost of moving itself, I don't think I'd entertain it for under $250k.

Is that too much money for a break glass in case of emergency ruckman?

Given I'm into my forties now & only 178cm tall, I'm probably over pricing myself ;)

CCJ will cost a lot, imo. He also wouldn't come to play a half season then drop back to the reserves whenever hippy is fit.

You are never going to have perfect cover for key positions. If the player was good enough to be a number 1 ruck, he wouldn't be sitting around in the reserves.

IF, an injury like that happens, then you gotta suck it up and use what you got. But especially now with reduced list sizes, you can't carry ready to go players, just in case.

What would you think his price (contract / trade value) would be? I'd be hoping for him not just to get pushed back to the reserves, but genuinely contend for a best 22 position. As you said though, hard to see him displacing any of the big 3 when fully fit.

I assume Richmond would look for a second rounder in return. As to his contract, I think there are clubs with way more cap space than us around (including North who got mentioned as having an interest today) and we couldn't afford him.

Look at Ben Hudson when he first came to us. Is there a retiring ruckman with coaching aspirations who would come as a bargain, with a transition to an off field role as part of the package?

Not sure if its been mentioned already but thoughts on Mabior Chol? Qld lad and has shown glimpses in his time at Richmond. Would come relatively cheap and imo would be ahead of Fullarton as the fwd/ruck behind Oscar.

We don't need a forward who can ruck though, which is what Chol is. I'm happy to persevere with Fullarton for that one.

We need a tap ruck who can go forward as well as take on center bounces if Oscar isn't available.

I was about to post this exact thing. Mummy is the example that came to mind for me, but Huddo's the same idea.

Nathan Vardy a good option. Could even get Zac Smith out of Gold Coast for half a year.

Bringing in a player as injury cover for 1 year is about the dumbest list management decision I've heard. It makes, 0 sense. You would need someone good enough to make it worth while, but it is just an injury cover so you don't want to be paying them much. Also the person needs to be happy to move interstate for a 12 month contract. Better off just making do with what we have, put more development time into Fullerton.
Why does it make zero sense? It could allow us to both cover Hipwood and give Oscar some relief without taking Joe out of the forward line. I don't think Fullarton is starting quality at present and I'm not sure he ever will be, so it scares me to put all our eggs into that basket for next year. There's also no reason a contract we hand out has to be for a year, it can be two years and the player becomes a backup ruck in 2023.

Mason Cox has openly said he'd be happy to switch clubs in order to extend his career. I don't think he'd ask for too much.

I don't agree that Chol will be relatively cheap. I can see a few other clubs bidding for him.

Someone get Matthew Kreuzer on the phone :)

Fullarton played 12 games this year for 3 goals and 1 behind and averaged 3.5 hit outs per game from 75% TOG.

I don't have a problem sticking with our current group but to say we should disregard a forward who can ruck is ignoring the state of play. Personally I am expecting Lane and Smith to go past Fullarton at a great rate of knots but if someone wants to come and play and is likely to be useful in that role then I take them.

You really don't like Fullarton do you lol. Fair enough.

I'm happy to see how he progresses with a third preseason under his belt. With a little bit more bulk & a better idea how to use it, I think he'll start clunking marks. And even if he doesn't he'll be able to mop up his own work and crumb the ball too because he's not out of the contest when the ball hits the deck unlike Cox, Kasboult et al.

Agree on your second point, Chol won't be bargain basement. Based off his one good game of the year against us alone. And CCJ will definitely go for a bit.

If he has a breakout game next season, I'll happily eat my words and back him to the hilt. Just haven't seen anything from him to be confident in yet.

Reports he wants to stay in VIC. North leading the race apparently
