False memory, I'm afraid.

We've played 5 prelims against the Cats since 1980 - 3 of them were thrillers decided by 7 points or less. (1980, 1981, 2007) The other two were thrashings one year after the other with the victors swapped.

The Cats thumped us in 2009 with a crowd of 87k and we returned the favour the next year in front of 95k.

I must have been at the 2009 one.

Very good ratings last night on fta considering it was a pretty ordinary game so a lot of people would have switched off bringing the averages down.

Those ratings for the rugby in all markets outside Sydney are appalling.

On another note, good to see that the Sydney v Collingwood game will be shown on Channel 7's main channel in Sydney tonight, pushing the news back to after the match.

Funny that. I heard on a Sydney based radio show that the NRL had their GF ticket pricing just right and that the AFL overprice their GF tickets 🤣
Depending on who's playing, some NRL GF tickets often remain on sale to the general public until a day or two before the match before the price is lowered to ensure they get a sell out.

In my time following football, tickets have never even reached the stage where they go on sale to the general public for MCG GFs because members snap them up straight away.

People give the AFL shit for being the VFL, but NRL is by all accounts still the NSWRL in all but name.

Yeah I always find that interesting. Victorian teams in the AFL is in the mid 50 percent range, NSW teams in the NRL is in the over 60 percent range, for teams in the competitions.

540 at the AFLW game in Launceston last night....what was the point of sending both teams down there for that? It's not like anyone watched it on TV.

The AFL would want to hope interest picks up after the grand final. Wookie probably has some quantitative data on it, but it just all seems underwhelming this year, and the standard looks to have dropped considerably.

Pretty crap timing to be playing it I reckon. Everyone's thinking about AFL finals you'd hope it would pick up after the Men's GF

was always going to be the case. Starting the season at this time of the year is near on pointless, but the AFL cant win on this - start later and people complain, play during the season and people will complain.

AFLW crowds are destined to be around the same level as the W-league - as will NRLW as they keep adding teams and extending the season.

It would help if they played games at crowd friendly times. It looks like at the moment they're scheduling games for a non-existent TV audience.

The number 1 priority, with daylight to number 2, should be maximising crowds.

Would a better option be to start the season immediately after the men's Grand Final (say on the Sunday)? Cause you basically have a window where you don't have the men's finals overshadowing the first rounds and you don't have a lot of other events to compete against aside from the NRL grand final (which is only really an NSW and Qld thing) and the spring racing carnival which most people only have a casual interest in).

The big question is if the weather is cooperative. Otherwise you have the same issue as running the comp in February.

AWFL bleeds money. The standard is shocking and the novelty has well and truly worn off. Quite simply, so few people care about it despite the mammoth investments in player wages and broadcast/media attention it receives. It is not a sustainable product.

Using the pre-finals bye, as it currently stands, to kick-off the AFLW is pretty much near perfect timing.
Absolutely any other schedule for a whole season you want to throw out there has problems.
Anyone who thinks the AFLW has no value has absolute shit for brains.

Airfares for let's say about 60 staff, ground facilities and hire, player payments, an absolute money pit that competition. No doubt they'll have their hand out for more money next year again though, personally I'd be embarrassed to ask for a payrise when the competition I'm playing in is losing more than 30 million dollars annually.

It's not a matter of either being a massive success or an abject failure. There are some things the AFLW has done well, but I fear the league has simply expanded too quickly, which has resulted in a heavily lopsided competition that is generally at a poor standard. And it's been compounded by some baffling scheduling.

As the old saying goes, nothing is worse for a bad product than good publicity. The AFLW gets plenty of publicity - most of it good, and people will support it initially as evidenced by some big crowds early. But this year they don't seem to have come back. Maybe in a couple of weeks there will be a bounce.
