I assume this will have a significant impact on Saturday’s attendance. Assumption this is a significant barrier for Geelongs faithful attending? C59E06BF-ACFB-448A-ACDE-A98F00896363.jpeg

Hmmm. Not great again.
I think people's expectations are too lofty.

The world is not 2019. Yes Covid. But not only that. The cost of living is sky-high, more people have more options regarding how to watch the match.

72K on a work day is great in any sport. A Friday night could see it approach 80K still.

I think anything over 70k is a pass for this in the circumstances.

Other Aussie leagues would kill for it. 130k for 2 matches is more than the entire attendance for the NRLs opening round

In fairness the AFL media were calling for crowds of 80k plus for the first two fixtures which was pretty ambitious but they publicly stated it.

Potentially they were doing it to drum up support and promote the game but when it doesn’t eventuate it’s a fair comment from the poster above to say not great.

I think 2017 is a good year to compare it to. Both coming off mediocre years previous. Crowd roughly the same.

Obviously as the home team they would have more but it's probably the biggest carlton crowd I've seen in a long time.

Not a like for like comparison, in 2017 Richmond were still in the "laughing stock for decades" category.

Now they've won 3 of the last 5 flags

Agree. To be fair, it’s probably the first time Carlton have entered this game as a genuine chance to win. Almost an even money chance it seemed. You had the feeling it was time for the Blues to end the round 1 curse, and there’s no question there’s a sense of optimism coming out of Carlton that we haven’t seen for probably close to 10 years. Their spine is now experienced and entering it’s prime years. It has recruited well and importantly it looks like it’s fixed it’s broader club with top, down alignment now locked in.

It’s not as though the Blues fans all died the last few years, leading to at times paltry crowds. They were always there, dormant and awaiting to come back out at the hint of genuine rebirth…. Just like the Richmond faithful did about 5 years ago.

It’s good (and bad!!) to see the Blues back. Footy’s much better when the big club in Melbourne are drawing big crowds and these rivalry grudge matches actually mean something.

Went to the game last night. It was impossible to get a drink or some food without missing half the game (my wife went to line up for food about 12 mins in the 1st qtr and didn't get back until half time).

Though I'm the plus side the toilets were less crowded probably due to the alcohol being hard to get too.

The MCG not opening enough food stalls and putting on enough staff may keep some people away in future games.

Though for me I will be bringing in my own food until the situation is resolved.

I’m not sure it’s all the Mcg’s fault; staff shortages are everywhere and these super casual jobs would presumedly be one of the last to fill. There was an article in the age about it the other day.

The closed bars were definitely noticeable though on Wednesday

The stores, especially the GSS ones are not built with social distancing in mind. You're supposed to all cram in there, rather than go one at a time.
