Cats / Bombers - 54,495. Another disappointing crowd with a pre covid view. The trends in place. Now the game needs time to hopefully build back up again. Although don’t count on Bomber fans doing the hard yards next week!!
Other train lines also closed this weekend. Belgrave & Lilidale.Agree. The best yardstick was the ~63,000 that went to the equivalent fixture in 2019, also Cats home game. Reasonable to say the crowd was about 20% what would’ve likely been the expected crowd pre covid. Round 1 and all, in normal times you’d have hoped 65,000 would rollup today.
Also, don’t discount the impact of busses replacing trains on the Geelong line today impacting the Geelong based fans rollup. The Cats member seating bays in the GSS were sparsely populated today.

Give it one more go next year and if that is the best they can do, might as well play it at Showgrounds.25,572 for the Giants/Swans game. Looked higher on tv and I had hoped it would cross 30k.
Still, it’s the 2nd highest GWS home game ever, only behind their first ever game.

no it wouldn't. With it being the 4th biggest match up in Melbourne this weekend it would never getting anywhere close.Pre Covid it would of been 65K
Possibly worse. Either way it’s likely going to take time to rebuild confidence back for a portion of footy going fans. COVID’s not going anywhere so hopefully as time goes on the fans start to gain confidence and return to matches. It will take good promotion and creative efforts for a sustained period to gradually entice them back.makes you wonder if these are the crowds now, will they get better in winter when the covid situation might be worse?

I don’t necessarily agree with this. Covid aside, no trains (busses) out of Geelong must impact the Cats fans attendance. Cats fans can possibly enlighten us here. A couple of train lines in metro Melbourne were down too.no it wouldn't. With it being the 4th biggest match up in Melbourne this weekend it would never getting anywhere close.
Obviously not. Don’t reckon that many people are staying home right now because they are worried about catching COVID. More likely the habit of going to the footy has been broken. Just like how people don’t like going to the office anymore, or that kids sports number are down 10 - 20%.makes you wonder if these are the crowds now, will they get better in winter when the covid situation might be worse?

I have no doubt even as a Cats home game, under normal circumstances this is definitely a 60,000+ game. Whether its 62,000 or 65,000 is sort of neither here or there.

The crowds have been pretty good this weekend, but they are 5-10 thousand less than what they would have been pre covid. But the AFL have made it harder for themselves with it's ridiculous ticketing structure when trying to get tickets. If they want to get bums on seats, they've really gotta simplify it.
Correct re Richmond/Carlton no build up low 70's is an excellent crowd. But under normal circumstances with a new coach high expectations pre covid there would of been 80 to 85k there. Prime example 2013 Malthouse new coach Round 1 81,000Obviously that has an impact. As does Covid.
But people always have unreal attendance expectations. Geelong only have 18 home crowds above 60k. 9 of those are V Hawthorn and a few are from that premiership era v Collingwood.
It's the same as Carlton/ Richmond. Most games aren't the 80 or 90000. Most are low 70s. You need the perfect build up to get 60k+, whixh was never going to happen with the GF replay, Carlton Richmond and Collingwood/St kilda before it.
Only 1 larger Haw/Nth crowd in the last 14 years.
This round will probably end up the 4th biggest round ever.
Certainly a decent crowd. Closer to ‘normal’ than the previous games in Melbourne. Although it’s worth noting this was a Kangaroos members replacement game so that is usually worth 3-4,000 more ‘away’ fans attending. Good crowd though.Only 1 larger Haw/Nth crowd in the last 14 years.

Should have said 3rd biggest. I made post 2008 the starting point.This isn’t true (2016 (50,000), 2012 (42,500), 2008 (42,000 and 40,000 albeit at Docklands) drew larger attendances.
