The subject of the onward re-selling of unwanted seats has never been adequately addressed anywhere to my knowledge
but it is something of great importance that should be done for a massive gain for football, the clubs and the fans.
Essendon implemented a seat resale program for a few years at Marvel, but discontinued it about 3-4 years ago. My understanding is that only about 600-700 members took up the offer at each home game which I think the club deemed for all the effort sng required resources didn’t stack up. Also, it received many calls from disgruntled members who took exception to have opposition fans buying up these tickets and filling empty members seats in the Essendon reserved seating bays. Regarding the second issue,
assume this is less a concern in WA as resold seats would be onsild largely to Dockers / Eagles fans.

I dont think the industry has come up with a workable solution as yet.

I’d probably say the best implementation (which still has its flaws) is moving from specific seats to specific bays.

This allows clubs to sell 120% of seats knowing that not all members will ever turn up to a home and away game.

This was implemented in Richmond Premiership Circle I think end of 2017 and at the time caused a lot of disgruntled members but I think everyone is used to it.

In 3121 we have always had bays rather than seat allocation and it always works out great and always got a seat even in 90K+ home and away games.

Surely this is the way clubs like Essendon and Blues get back to 50,000 at Marvel.

The AFL now streaming the VFL as well as the WAFL

The Smithy's Victorian Football League (VFL) season starts on Friday 25 March and fans of the competition can look forward to all 198 home-and-away and finals matches in 2022 being live streamed free via AFL.com.au and the AFL Live Official App, for the first time.

Two matches will take place on Saturday afternoon and then one on Saturday night, before five matches on Sunday conclude Round One.

VFL broadcast partner the Seven Network will show a weekly game plus finals, live and free on 7 in Victoria and 7Plus nationally. Fans can catch up from anywhere around the nation on 7plus.

The AFL is continuing to live stream free all matches of Victoria's premier women's state league competition. One VFLW match weekly will continue to be live streamed via AFL.com.au and the AFL Live Official App, with the remaining matches available live and free on the new VFLW.tv platform, a dedicated live streaming hub for VFLW. For the VFLW fixture and links to streaming matches on AFL platforms, visit: afl.com.au/stream-vfl

I agree, a great concept. Apparently only about 60% of season seat holders actually turn up to any given home game. Obviously this rate increases above this for blockbusters, and falls below 50% if the team is not performing. Therefore, this concept has merit and means no ‘management’ of the process from week to week.

So the same amount of bays allocated each game? They use to just allocate bays for members in the 90s which I liked but they got rid of it after a while. It does annoy me when you rock up to a half full stadium and have to sit all the way up the top. It was even like that when I went to gc and giants stadium, small crowd but still had to walk past all the empty seats to go sit in the shit ones.

So like last year the G has gone about quietly closing off big sections for lower drawing games.

I get the business case, I understand the financial side of it and even how it looks much better having a full ground level.

This said, as a Tiger I’d much prefer to sit level 4 GA of the GSS than head down to the Ponsford. It’s just not part of our DNA.

Small change and understand the reasoning, but don’t love it!

How do the AFL let channel 7 get away with putting games like this on their secondary channel in Sydney? Its pretty poor in my opinion, it should be part of the next contract at least say 10 games a year on the main channel or something. Great crowd and great atmosphere though.

First 3 games of the season all rated over 1m - season opener hitting 1.4m

The_Wookie do you know what the average rating was for a regular season game in 2021? I'm trying to get my head around what is and isn't good ratings these days.

Lack of Kayo data makes it hard to really compare.

This years ratings collection is all encompassing - with Total TV, consolidated data and for now at least, Kayo.

It only matters if there's a sellout. Otherwise the home club loses on ticket revenue. How often does a game at Docklands actually sell out? Probably only happens 4 or 5 times a year.

The Eagles get away with it because they sell games out and have a big waiting list to market to.

Another disappointing crowd today at the MCG especially with this cracking weather. Tomorrow will be even better weather but based on todays rollup I'm expecting a very small crowd for Richmond v GWS more akin to a BBL atmosphere. Hard to know if it's covid or the crappy rules making games unwatchable or a bit of everything

I’m still hearing lots of noise around stupid reserved seat prices, parking costs and restrictions, poor service in stadiums, difficulty buying tickets via ticket agencies and membership barcode / app issues that all create barriers in addition to covid.

Feels like attending matches is too difficult for some presently. It will take time and effort on everyone’s part to grow attendances again.

It's covid the games this year have been great quality in my opinion.
