This round:

Port's lowest crowd at Adelaide Oval.

Collingwood's 3rd lowest crowd at Docklands.
Essendon 4th lowest crowd at Docklands.

Hawthorn's second lowest MCG crowd v Vic opposition in 18 years.
Richmond's second lowest MCG crowd v Vic opposition since their revival.

There's a lot of work to be done to rebuild the crowds. The AFL can't just sit back and trust it will go back to what it was.

(All excluding restricted crowds in 20/21)

Good context. Crowds are down and there’s much work required to build them back up in the coming years.

I'm not sure there's a lot the AFL can do. They've got no control over people shitting the bed over covid. Clubs can do more promotion if they want to, but I reckon the AFL spending excessively at the moment is just wasted money.

Every club is entitled to building a game.
Short term pain, long term game, let it grow.

Like Anzac Day, Dreamtime, round one opener, Easter Monday..

If a club is creative enough to make a prime slot, well it should be theirs.

Lol, those games were big from the get go. I can't think of a game that's gradually become a blockbuster. Not unless the teams suddenly play a grand final or 2 against each other anyway.

Agree.

I think the mistake they made with Good Friday was not sticking with North and the Dogs after a successful 2017, and instead interchanging North's opponents for a few years between the Dogs, Saints and Bombers.

Dreamtime was not a blockbuster..
50k.. 60k.. 80k.. and now is mostly over 80k.

The lions sell out Easter Thursday every year now.

You have to give clubs that a shot to build.

Dreamtime didn’t start off with massive crowds. Anzac Eve didn’t either if I recall correctly.

Though obviously those games involve larger clubs and are played at the G, so they grew pretty quickly.

North are going to be possible spooners for the 2nd year in a row and we are 1-3 and likely to not make finals after a GF loss. We don’t really have any previous rivalries or regular finals meetings either to help with the growth of this marquee game either.

Whilst I agree with mostly everything you said, the Dogs should however make finals this season.

I think the Good Friday match involving North Melbourne is a really hard one to manage because you have so many people from Victoria who head away for the long weekend.

Not sharing the game back and forth is a real mistep as well. People are more likely to go every year if they get in for free every 2nd year.

At the moment there's no reason for Dogs fans to get involved.

Exactly, was about to bring that up. If it’s North’s home game every year our fans will stop giving a shit (if they haven’t already). If the home games do not rotate then it’ll probably end up like the Eureka game.

That's the thing though, a "marquee" fixture can only be as big as the 2 clubs involved. As much as people like hyping up Anzac day as a gift to those 2 clubs, they're both big enough to fill the ground. Dreamtime is the same. I guess the difference is rallying the away fans to buy a ticket - usually you might get 40k home fans + 20k away fans. If you get the 20k away fans to 40k then it becomes a blockbuster.
Best case scenario for North v Dogs is 20-25k each, so a 45k crowd (which would be a very good result). But unless you can get the Dogs fans to buy a ticket en masse, you're now looking at more of a 30k crowd, and with North shit and the Dogs stumbling, it might even be less.

I know a lot of people have high expectations surrounding crowds, but a little perspective is always handy. So for this week alone...

...we've got another resurgence off a global pandemic in the west (but to be honest 30k against GWS anywhere is as solid as anything), a game held at a Kardinia Park at nearly half its previous capacity, one of the biggest sporting events held in the country which had over 250k attend Saturday and Sunday where 4 matches went head to head, a club failing to deliver and build-upon numerous finals campaigns falling to 0-4, and 2 smaller albeit very respectable crowds up North. Let alone the rising cost of living and the paranoia that's still surrounding other states affected by COVID.

All in all, there are numerous codes worldwide let alone Australia alone that would kill to have consistent crowds in the 20-40k+ range. I know this year counts technically as the first year back without restrictions, but there are still many other factors at play.
